Looks Middle Eastern/ African maybe even Greek. Interesting post.

His father, the emperor Septimius Severus, was North African (the first African emperor of Rome!), and his mother, Julia Domna, was Syrian, from a wealthy priestly family

#rome was a multiethnic empire

Yep! Septimius Severus was born in what is now Libya. (X)

That Roman Empire was a real big place!

Diversity Win! This Slave-State Tyrant is Bipoc!

Imagine being the only person alive who can say this

buzz aldrin and neil armstrong liked to do a thing where they’d tell unfunny jokes at parties about being on the moon and when people were confused they’d go “guess you had to have been there”

there's a cherry blossom tree in DC that keeps blooming every year even though it shouldn't and the park service keeps thinking it's dead and then it keeps blooming! well they're removing a lot of trees to rehabilitate the area and they've said it's finally time for stumpy to go and they're going to mulch it and use the mulch to enrich all the other trees so it can help everything else keep going. and they're also going to plant spliced little pieces of it all over so that stumpy can live forever and this is genuinely sending me into a spiral

STUMPY MY BELOVED!!!!

For added context on what rehabilitating the area means: there are structural issues with the Tidal Basin seawall that cause flooding like this independent of rainfall. Big portions of the sidewalk in Stumpy’s section are regularly submerged, which is bad for the land and the trees themselves, not to mention an accessibility issue for visitors.

It’s sad that Stumpy and many other trees in the area will need to be cut down, but it will ensure the continued survival of the other trees in the area, and Stumpy himself will live on in his cuttings!

I believe Stumpy will be taken to the national arboretum and his clones will return to the tidal basin after the rebuilding.

Someone left him a bottle of bourbon as an offering.

The Japanese Embassy came to pay him honor this week.

Stumpy and his cohort are part of the original gift from Japan more than 100 years ago, and many have lived this long bc the National Parks takes care of them. Normally the trees live about 40-50 years.

There is a house centipede (extremely leggy, extremely fast nightmare creatures that scare me, but they're good so I don't want to hurt him!) that will not stop jumping into my kitchen sink at night. This is a problem because he can't get back out again. Then he won't let me fish him out. And I'm kind of very afraid of him. So, like, twice a week I have to spend the morning getting very very scared while trying to catch a house centipede who is also very very scared, and it ruins both of our days.

idk if this is a problem anyone else has. it is a problem that I have had, and so I am posting the solution. there is a picture of the house centipede under the cut just FYI.

Not to be all crunchy granola conspiracy theorist but acrylic nails are literally made out of micro plastics (and return to micro plastics when they’re ground off) and there’s comparatively little regulation as to what goes into cosmetics, and using false lashes involves sticking glue right next to your ocular mucosa, which is more vulnerable to absorbing germs and chemicals than skin, and most hair dye is literally so bad for you that you’re not supposed to use it when you’re pregnant.

It’s just not good for you and it is completely avoidable.

I’m not suggesting all chemicals are evil and we need to make everything from scratch, but I do think that it’s something to be considered.

The risk is not only to yourself when you use these products but also to the women who apply them as part of their job. For them, the risk is far, far greater.

Respiratory and skin problems amongst nail salon workers are already well-known, as well as repetitive strain injuries but other products are cardinogenic or damaging to reproductive health.

Access to products that could improve worker safety (ie gloves) is usually limited by the salons.

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/11/nyregion/nail-salon-workers-in-nyc-face-hazardous-chemicals.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cb Here is the article these are from. There is much more expanded on in the article in terms of the health risks which I have not posted for the sake of brevity.

Another article:

I don’t know much about other professions in the beauty industry but having a quick look:

From this, 70% of hairdressers will suffer from work-related skin damage at some point in their career.

Jobs like working in a nail salon or as a hairdresser are not brought up as “dangerous” jobs despite the very high levels of risk highlighted in these articles.

And some articles on makeup, as a more general note.

87% of products from the ten best-selling cosmetic brands contain microplastics.

Makeup may be contaminated with lead or asbestos. It may also contain PFAS, pthalates, formaldehyde, and parabens.

This risk is increased with counterfeit makeup products, which have, for example, been found to contain arsenic as well as bacteria associated with fecal matter.

It is also incredibly important to consider the risks to the workers who manufacture these products.

Thank you for these additions.

As a person who’s lost many family members to pulmonary fibrosis after working in the trades and breathing in fumes and fibers for 20-30 years, I cannot say how glad I am to see this post on my For You page.

I am terrified that women are the new frontier of pulmonary fibrosis and other such lung issues with our consumption of hair straightening products and dry shampoos, nail polished and glue, blush and eyeshadow and pressing powders, and the like.

The lungs were not designed to breathe in mica or talc or formaldehyde on a daily basis.
