a thing that will forever amuse me is the movie fandom’s depiction of the relationship between gandalf and pippin. like “haha old man is annoyed by younger man” is funny on its own but what most of them don’t know is:

gandalf is an entity, an angelic being taking up human form who is older than time itself. pippin ‘i exist to spite god’ took is like 17. this is a teenager constantly fucking up an ancient being.

pippin is the biggest minor inconvenience in gandalf’s life.

The excuse will always be “well ok sure it’s bad & his policies are shit & yeah he‘s racist & yes he might be too handsy with women & yes we remember his treatment of Anita Hill & yes he participated in drone-striking civilians abroad & true, he did help deport record numbers of people...but the Republican boogeyman will be woooorse.” Blue conservatives like Biden don’t face resistance from centrists, libs & the center-left, so its easier to enact harmful policies & a new center-right SC justice (at best).

That should be just as scary as Trump, who only really differs in that he’s brazen enough to say the fascist part out loud.

He refuses to commit to decriminalizing marijuana, which Black people are serving life sentences for, & he supports adding additional funding to overfunded police. He wrote the ‘94 crime bill & was pro-mass incarceration / pro-dehumanizing Black “criminals” as thugs that are beyond rehabilitation & thus need to be “removed from society.” He outright refused to address the source of “criminality,” which is poverty, desperation, abuse & systematic racism in the justice system. Biden voted for Scalia & demeaned Anita Hill, literal victim of sexual harassment, in front of the world— which paved the way for Clarence Thomas to join the SC. He called a Black reporter a “junkie” on air, said that if Black voters don’t give him their vote they “aint Black,” & said the Black community “isn’t as diverse” as the Latino community—which doesn’t make sense for a myriad of reasons, the first of which is that there are literally Afro-Latinos. He pet a disabled person’s face like a dog for a photo op.

I know it’s easier & less distressing to pretend that Democrats are leftwing or progressive or liberal, but keeping your head buried in the sand helps absolutely no one—least of all marginalized people. The fact that staunch Republicans like the fucking Lincoln Project support Biden should really tell you everything you need to know.

i told my family about the rabbinic definition of a “wall” as “a barrier that impedes the passage of goats” and my mother was so delighted by this that weeks later she showed me a photo of a baby goat squeezing itself under a gate and was like “this is NOT a wall!”

If the baby goat had to squeeze through, that may suffice? Impeding can mean slowing down or delaying or making more difficult, so if the gate posed enough of a challege, it may be a wall.

A wall that does not stop goats is not a kosher wall but the rabbis, IMO, define it too narrowly, as they say a wall two handsbreadths off the ground will stop a goat and admittedly I have kind of big hands but I’ve seen goats get through a smaller space than that on many occasions

My neighbor has a goat farm with a cattle grid instead of a gate on his driveway. It seems to contain them, to my surprise. Does a cattle grid count as a “barrier”, and if so, could a goat-stopping cattle grid be considered a wall?

If it doesn’t stop a goat it’s not a wall, but if it does stop a goat it isn’t necessarily a wall
