It was the first time I knew the power of being on stage. I remember thinking, ‘Oh God, they’re waiting for me, they’re listening to everything I say and I have complete control.’ I still feel that now. How everyone is hanging on to your every word; how they are going to feel how you want them to feel.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Margaery Tyrell recently and how little we know of what’s going on in the poor girl’s head. I know a lot of major contributors to the ASOIAF fandom think her friendship with Sansa was superficial and self-serving, which I’m not denying as a possibility.

At the same time, Margaery is only a sixteen year old girl. While she plays the part of a competent, mature queen very well, it’s possible Margaery genuinely didn’t know how to help Sansa after the Willas plot was ruined. It could be she was afraid that by continuing to spend time around Sansa, she would draw Joffrey’s or Cersei’s attentions to her. Perhaps Joffrey (or Olenna) even said something to stoke those fears.

Could Margaery, scared of approaching Sansa herself, have asked Garlan to extend a hand of kindness? Suggested that he dance with her and begin to build a relationship there, so Sansa could find a friend who wasn’t under the constant scrutiny of the dowager queen and king?

I’m not saying this is what happened. Margaery may have been a callous, fair-weather friend. But I think it’s sad that there’s no PoV in the Tyrell camp to give us some insight into her actual motivations. Even in the very structure of the narrative, Margaery only gets to be an extension of her family’s ambitions.
