There is a lot of talk in the fandom about Hua Cheng's attachment and how he never wants to lose Xie Lian ever again, but less talk about Xie Lian's side.

Man saw Wuming ripped apart in front of him and lived with that guilt for 800 years, later he learns that same ghost is still not-alive and had been looking for him all this time. Xie Lian is just as attached and was very happy about the red string that will let him find Hua Cheng anywhere, and in the extras he'd rather be in extreme pain than unable to be around (or even think) about Hua Cheng anymore.

The gods are freaked out about possessive demon ghost king but xie lian is just as crazy and clutching at his ghost with bloody and traumatized and loving fingers. He's just hiding it behind an innocent-looking pretty boy face

(i saw a post about how hua cheng would like airtag and it got me thinking about xie lian. xie lian would ALSO like that airtag, would like to put one on hua cheng too. They fear losing each other again.)

I’ve been working on a set of very depressing artworks for the past 1,5 months, so I took a smol break and sketched comforting Hualian 🥲🙏

Because in TGCF, a god dies by being forgotten, and a ghost isn't born unless it has something to remember. Immortality means being remembered and having something to remember, and there's nothing more human than that.

I think Xie Lian may be a very loving, devoted partner but also a little shit that's still lowkey bitter about the "wanna get married?" thing Hua Cheng pulled on him so he decides he will in fact settle the score

So one day as he's hanging out around paradise manor, he very casually goes

"San Lang I don't think we should be lovers anymore"

And of course Hua Cheng is ready to die a fourth time immediately, he's almost crying, shaking, screaming, sliding against the wall before Xie Lian smiles all brightly at him and goes "I think we should be husbands instead."

And Hua Cheng dissolves into butterflies to go scream at Yin Yu about it
