Me. New. The same

Finally undergoing the massive effort of switching my tömblr account, this is the new one. Old main, now called @phoenikethatwas, got shadowbanned. I know I could try opening a ticket with the staff and maybe get the issue resolved in about five minutes if I’m lucky – but I also kind of feel like getting rid of about 8 years of tumblr history. I’ll keep my old blog as a repository of likes and reblogs.

Wow, I can actually see myself in the damn search, now.

Tagging some mutuals who might still want to follow…? No obligations of course. (A few of yall seem to be shadowbanned, too, so I have no idea if the tags work…) Also, I’m not leaving anyone out on the purpose of losing them, I’m just squeamish about bothering people, especially if we haven’t interacted that much lately. Alternatively, I might not have noticed you when scrolling the list. Or you’ve gone and changed your handle and I don’t recognize you anymore.

logical brain: it’s just fanfiction… you’re writing this for fun… it’s okay if it’s not perfect as long as you enjoyed creating it

monkey brain: everything I write must be groundbreaking

Avatar

My main problem as a writer is that I don’t write because “I have a story to tell”. I write because there are worlds I want to visit, ideas I want to explore, people I want to meet, conversations I want to hear, emotions that I want to express, and impossibilities I want to make real.

Which means that I still need a fucking plot.

Get yourself un-shadowbanned That post seems to be going around a bit but not the reblog on how to fix it, so here’s another

  • Go to postlimit, put in your blog name, TAKE A SCREENSHOT
  • Go to tumblr support and file a support ticket. Category: Blog incorrectly marked explicit. Details: posts hidden from search results. Attach the screenshot. Do this even if you’ve already filed a support ticket N days ago without a screenshot. Make sure the relevant blog is chosen and you have the right contact email address.

They got back to me within an hour.

After 8 years, I’m considering switching to a new tumblr. It seems like this old one has some kind of invisibility curse on it? It didn’t get marked as sensitive, but it doesn’t show up in searches and tags, and hasn’t in years. Of the handful of people I asked, only one could see my blog in search results. Postlimit says I’m flagged as NSFW, even though that setting hasn’t been available in ages -- maybe that’s what’s causing this, I dunno. All I know is that I haven’t bothered posting much of anything here in years because I can get max 2 notes on my posts, even if I try tagging them. I did have the “hide me from search engines” setting turned on without knowing for a long while, but I disabled it months ago and nothing has changed.

Of course it’s possible that no one genuinely cares about anything I post, but at this point it’s probably all the same if I just try setting up a new account. If I go through with the switch, I will change my handles so that phoenike.tumblr.com points to the new blog, and leave this old one as a repository for old likes and stuff.

DBH drabbles

A couple of drabbles I wrote for Detroit Become Human drabble-a-thon over at Dreamwidth.

I’d like to try writing more of these for Markus/Simon. So, if you have an idea for a prompt, leave an ask and I’ll maybe write a hundred words for it. Please just make them safe for work, since I’m not that into smut for these two. Making out and intense interfacing is the far end of what I can handle :-P

(If you’re seeing this twice in some tag or whatever, it’s because I’m testing stuff. Apologies.)

Simon/Markus, "Any truth is better than indefinite doubt." -Arthur Conan Doyle

After twenty-three seconds, Simon still hasn’t looked at him.

Markus steps away. He knew this could happen. That doesn’t make it any easier. “Forgive me. I shouldn’t have —” Finally, Simon raises his head. But the emotion he shows is anger, not sadness. “How could you,” he rasps. “How could you make me wait all this time! I thought — I was sure you didn’t even —” He winces and covers his eyes with his hand. Oh, thank god. “I’m sorry,” Markus whispers. “I’m an idiot. Can you ever forgive me?” “No,” Simon says. But Markus knows he is lying.

Markus/North, (Fond) Remembrance

“Do you ever miss it?” Caught off guard, North almost asks if Markus is serious — but when is he not? He’s Markus, everything is important to him. She snorts, arms folded, eyes on the Detroit skyline from the windows. “Miss what? Our fighting?” After all these years, Markus’s smile still sends her processes skipping. “I miss it, sometimes.” North rolls her eyes. “Well, the interfacing was spectacular. Kamski really knew what he did when he built you.” Markus laughs. “I think you’re spectacular, too.” “Oh, shut up.” But she can’t help smiling. She’s not just a machine, after all.

ERASE the idea that America saved lives by dropping two atomic bombs on Japan from your minds. ERASE the idea that it was anything more than a political move to scare Russia and also to satiate US curiosity as to the true ability of nuclear weapons. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were not military bases. They were heavily populated civilian cities chosen precisely bc the U.S. wanted to see how many people an atomic bomb could kill in one go. Japan was on the verge of surrendering, the U.S. literally wanted to test out their nuclear weapons on people that they deemed disposable. That is it. If those bombs were dropped by any nation other than the US veryone involved would have been tried as war criminals.

Also erase the idea that America was the hero of WWII and got into the war because they wanted so save people. They couldn’t have cared less about the victims of the Holocaust, proven by the fact that they turned away so many shiploads of refugees that went on to die at the hands of Nazis.

“the us wanted to see how many people an atomic bomb could kill in one go” oh really? Source your bullshit, asshole

i left out sources bc i figured most tumblr users know how to use google but ok

- Report produced by the U.S Strategic Bombing Group (employed by Truman) to survey the air attacks on Japan concluded that:

“Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey’s opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945 and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.” - page 52-56

- Dwight Eisenhower future president and then Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces also said:

I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to [the then Secretary of War] my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives.” - page 380

- Admiral William Leahy, one of the highest ranking officials in the US army during WW2 wrote of the usage of the bombs:

It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. […] My own feeling was that in being the first to use it, we had adopted an ethical standard common to the barbarians of the Dark Ages. I was not taught to make war in that fashion, and wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.” - page 441

- General Douglas McArthur, another high ranking US official in the war:

[When asked about his opinion on bombing Japan] He replied that he saw no military justification for the dropping of the bomb. The war might have ended weeks earlier, he said, if the United States had agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution of the emperor.” - page 70-71

- On September 9, 1945 Admiral William F. Halsey commander of the Third Fleet publicly quoted as saying:

“The first atomic bomb was an unnecessary experiment… . It was a mistake to ever drop it… . [the scientists] had this toy and they wanted to try it out, so they dropped it… . It killed a lot of Japs.” - online source

- The US secretary of war, Henry Stimson, speaking to President Truman:

“I was a little fearful that before we could get ready the Air Force might have Japan so thoroughly bombed out that the new weapon [the atomic bomb] would not have a fair background to show its strength.” - diary of Henry Stimson which can be found online here

- Even those deploying the bombs questioned the decision to drop them on civilian cities:

I thought that if we were going to drop the atomic bomb, drop it on the outskirts–say in Tokyo Bay–so that the effects would not be as devastating to the city and the people. I made this suggestion over the phone between the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and I was told to go ahead with our targets.” - online source

- Lewis Strauss Assistant to the Navy Secretary James Forrestal on the locations of the bombings:

I remember suggesting […] a large forest of cryptomeria trees not far from Tokyo. The cryptomeria tree is the Japanese version of our redwood… I anticipated that a bomb detonated at a suitable height above such a forest… would lay the trees out in windrows from the center of the explosion in all directions as though they were matchsticks, and, of course, set them afire in the center. […] Secretary Forrestal agreed wholeheartedly with the recommendation.” - page 145

So to recap:

  1. A lot of American generals were against using the bomb as they felt it served an empty purpose.
  2. Those who agreed with its usage completely disagreed with dropping them on cities.
  3. Truman went ahead and had them detonated in two highly populated civilian cities anyway. Two cities that had remained mostly untouched by regular bombings throughout the war precisely bc of their lack of value to the Japanese war effort.

Draw your own conclusions.

I hope y'all know that this is common knowledge to everyone of every other country

I am really not trying to be rude, I just want to understand!! If you enjoy being sexually intimate with a partner, how are you asexual? Sorry if this comes across as offensive, I’m just interested to know!

There are other reasons than specifically wanting to have sex for the sake of having sex. For example, some asexuals want to please their non-asexual partners, and it isn’t necessarily uncomfortable for them, they just don’t specifically desire that particular action. Like, asexuals can still dig the feeling of sexual stimulation, since it is meant to be pleasurable. It’s like, if there’s cake on the table, but you don’t particularly want cake at that time, or you don’t really care for cake, you can still choose to eat it because even if cake isn’t your favourite or you’re quite full already, it still tastes fine, and your best friend is eating some with you.

Alternatively, it’s possible to sort of “trade favours”; instead of sexually pleasing their asexual partner who is disinterested in receiving sexually, the non-asexual party might cuddle, kiss and otherwise be physically affectionate with their partner while making love. This’d still count as sexual intimacy, even though only one person in the act is - hopefully - orgasming.

Some asexuals see sex as a way to bond with their partners. Again, the act isn’t specifically interesting to them, but it works as a means to an end - through it, they get to feel closer to their partner.

Asexuality is the absence of sexual attraction, the “I want to bang that” trigger that most people have in response to potential sexual partners. Not the absence of sexual activity itself, which would be celibacy - the choice to not engage in sex, the act. An asexual can have sex and not feel that specific type of attraction to their partner, as attraction is passive and not based in active choice. It doesn’t mean that that partner is disgusting to them, either; they may well be aesthetically attractive to the asexual person (the same way you can appreciate a beautiful statue or a painting without becoming sexually aroused by viewing it) and the asexual person may well desire physical intimacy with them, such as hugging, kissing, cuddling and holding hands. Since not all asexuals are inherently repulsed by sex but merely disinterested in it by default, turning that desire for general closeness into sexual activity where it provides fulfillment of some form to both parties isn’t necessarily paradoxical.

Someone once brought up a fairly good point regarding this subject; non-asexual people also sometimes hook up and have sex with people that aren’t specifically attractive to them. It can still be perfectly consensual and satisfy the needs of both parties, despite the fact that the base attraction wasn’t there. For example, a person who just wants to have sex with someone might go along with a partner they would not otherwise choose, but who simply happens to be available and ready to do the deed with them. Alternatively, a woman might seek to have a baby, and have sex with a partner solely for that purpose, and whether the partner chosen is sexually attractive to them or not isn’t a big factor in the choice. (Plenty of asexual women choose to have sex to have children.) There are multiple reasons to have sex even when you’re not sexually attracted. Specifically for asexuals, the factor of having a non-asexual partner is usually a big motivator to have sex, and other reasons like the ones I explored above may additionally pop up to support that decision.

Finally, some asexuals just really dig orgasms. Most people do. We just don’t have that special someone we wish was delivering them to us, and largely prefer to take care of our own. But when you are in a relationship and that kind of comes as a package deal, some asexuals don’t feel like it’s a bad trade, or at least aren’t violently opposed to the idea. I think most asexuals who do choose to have sex are indifferent to it - it’s not their favourite thing in the world, but it takes care of business.

I’m working on an audio transcript using voice recognition technology, and this gentleman has a very nice accent, but when he says “got” the word is often noted down as “God”.

We don’t know what God tested and what God registered as true or untrue.

We don’t know what God entered into the code since the last time we tested.

We don’t know what God ticketed as an issue and what just God ignored.

Now we know what God changed, but we don’t have a record of what God approved.
