I've never heard anyone talk about how Vexen's Character Files story, Flowers for Intelligence, is named after Flowers for Algernon, a novel about a developmentally disabled man who undergoes a procedure to obtain a genius IQ. In his story, Vexen talks about how he's realized that pursuing intelligence is meaningless, and the "fools" are the truly intelligent ones. He shares an interesting hypothesis that the heart is closely related to intellect and that the two might even be the same thing. In the second half of his story, he talks about Demyx, who he refers to as the most foolish among them.
So, that reference, huh...
As the novel's protagonist, Charlie Gordon, becomes more intelligent, it gets harder for him to relate to his past self. He starts to see him as a separate person. He develops a delusion where he sees his past self, who he refers to in third person (him/Charlie), watching him everywhere he goes. In the beginning, his main motivation for undergoing the procedure was because he thought he would have more friends if he were smarter. Instead, his newfound intelligence causes him to lose the qualities that made him a kind and charming person, and all of his relationships fall apart.
In the end, he regresses and loses all of the knowledge that he'd gained. Now he sees his previously intelligent self as another person who's watching him. Having forgotten the many ways that becoming intelligent ruined his life and made him miserable, he wishes to become intelligent again. It's kinda tragic. I may have shed a tear. 10/10. You should read it.
Vexen's hypothesis begs the question "Is Demyx a more intelligent person when he's human?" Combined with this reference, it really makes ya think...
