Oh hai there!
Hey guys... I still lurk a lot. Here’s something I’ve been doing lots of since I left - diving.
Sharks on the wreck of the Atlas in NC. ~ 100 feet deep.
Mansplaining: The tweet.
This is performance art.
So much yes
melanietris replied to your post: Oh hi. I guess I got sucked into this...
I hate to break it to you but that card for the rental store isn’t going to work.
Believe it or not, it is still in business! https://www.yelp.com/biz/odyssey-video-north-hollywood
Oh hi. I guess I got sucked into this nostalgia-ish game...
@snapthistiger gave me 2007. That was so recent, though...
...oh, wait, that was 10 years ago! What?! Does time speed up as you age? It sure feels like it does.
CAR Then: 2003 Toyota Corolla (sadly totaled in an accident in 2010) Now: 2010 Toyota Matrix
JOB Then: veterinarian at my current place. I had just switched to all nights from a mix of day and night shift Now: still at the same place, mostly night shift. Occasionally pick up some weekend days. This year I’ve finally cut my hours and it feels good.
AGE Then: 29 Now: 39
LIVED Then: Los Angeles (Echo Park) Now: Pasadena, CA PETS Then: Laika (Husky/ Chow), and Kate (Husky/ Shepherd)
Now: Kate and Darcy (Doberman)
LOCAL RESTAURANT Then: roommate and I used to go to the Astro Family Restaurant (a 24 hour diner in Echo Park) ALL the freaking time. Now: Haven’t been going to restaurants much. I am enjoying cooking my own food.
TV Then: Nope. I had an analog TV for watching movies on DVD and VHS(!), but no reception and no cable. I had a rental card for a local video store.(!!!) Now: Still no cable but I have a new TV so I could watch local TV if I wanted. I’m more of a Netflix person. Recently watched season 1 of Mr. Robot and decided that was enough of that. I’ve found several of the Netflix Original Series to be crazy good. Actually I still do have a rental card for a brick and mortar video store. :)
HAPPY Then: Such a tough question for me. I guess I thought I was. Now: Reply hazy, ask again later. But... working on it. Always working on it.
KIDS Then: nope Now: nope and probably never. There’s a somewhat uncomfortable finality to that NOW, but it was my choice. My adamant choice.
Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books? I always read them with bookmarks marking previous pages so I could go back if I chose “you just opened an airlock and were sucked out into space and died.” Wish I could have kept a bookmark in a couple of previous pages of life, sometimes.
“I water my lawn every morning and birds come to get worms out of the wet ground. If I ever miss a day, the ground will be too hard, and the birds will sit in the yard and call out because their babies are hungry. That’s how I’ve felt my whole life. Like a bird calling out for food. Thirty years ago I went on strike in this same square. We weren’t getting paychecks. There was no money for bills or food. At the time my sons were one, eight, and nine. So we decided to go camping. I’d go fishing on the lake every night and catch two trout. That was enough to feed the four of us. We did it out of necessity but it was beautiful. My sons are in their thirties now. All of them have flown away. But they remember those times with happiness.” (San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina)
Someone sent some very sweet Tumblr Valentine’s mail my way and it just made my whole week. :)
5K PR this am!!!! I didn't even come close to winning anything because damn ER vets are some fast, in-shape people! But I did beat my 2010 5K PR by a few seconds. My Garmin said 25:58 and my previous was 26:08. I'll take it, especially after thinking I'd need to take it easy after my long run yesterday evening. Woohoo!
15 ish miles, 2:50:37 I say ish because I did half outside and half on the hotel treadmill. I thought my Garmin was at about 7.25 when I started using the treadmill, but I wasn't sure. The Garmin has an accelerometer in it so it's supposed to be accurate even indoors where GPS is not available. But it seemed like it was off by about 0.2 or so. I wasn't sure so I ran a little extra to make sure I did 15. I was actually only committed to 10 when I started running. Or maybe 8. But I kept adding a little and then at the half marathon mark I figured it would be lame not to finish. I wasn't too tired, I was just really bored. I was going to do the whole run outside but there were no water fountains anywhere and I ran out of water at mile 5. My handheld bottle doesn't last long in the heat. So then I ran back to the hotel and got on the treadmill. I didn't even have any tunes and the treadmill was facing a wall! I am lucky I didn't due of boredom.
The girls got tagged for stop, drop selfie. Here they are scarfing breakfast as I leave them at work for 6 long days while I’m at my conference. I miss them already!! We tag anyone's pet who wants to play along. Since I will be suffering severe animal withdrawal at the conference, it will be nice to have a barrage of pet pics on my dash. :)
Pacific Coast Tri 2015, Part 2
Terribly slumped on the bike in the 2nd photo... I probably should take these to the bike fitter and say “help!”
Nice faces I make while racing... I smile and try not to look like I’m dying when I see a photographer but I always seem to not see them til it’s too late.
Pacific Coast Tri 2015
I don’t know that guy, he just walked up and asked me to help him zip up. In the group shot I’m toward the left. In the ocean shots, eh, I think I’m under the water by then. :)
I did not realize there was a photographer there at the swim exit. Heh.
Acai berry facts. Left in an organic juice place.
My day got a little messed up because I spent a couple of hours waiting on the gas company to come inspect some work I had done, and they had to reschedule. Grrr. (They are checking to see I really did have insulation blown into my attic, and then I get a small rebate. It’s almost not worth it to deal with the inspection, the forms, and the 5 phone calls I have had to make...)
Anyway, I was talking myself out of the pool because my calves were sore and I kept almost getting a cramp last night. But I felt better by the time the inspection was called off, so I went to the pool. I wasn’t sure if I’d get through my whole workout, but I did! :)
2200 meters, ~ 1 hour
I was surprised how much taking rest intervals and changing things up slowed me down. When I just go and swim slow and steady I can get a lot farther in an hour. According to my watch, though, I was only actually moving for 43 minutes!
At the end, the Master’s swim team kicked me out of my lane, so I just barely had time to do the last 100 meters. I looked at their workout and it was 4000 meters. Wow. That would take me for-freaking-ever. Maybe in a few months I might try to join them for a workout and see if I like it. It would be really nice to swim with a group. Unfortunately their times are early morning (I am still at work), mid-day (I am usually just going to bed then), and evening (I am already at work again). So I could probably only go on Fridays anyway.
I am going to be in Washington, DC (well, the hotel address is National Harbor, Maryland) for a work conference next week. I have a 15 miler to do on Saturday and I’d kind of rather not do it on the hotel treadmill... anyone have any suggestions for an outdoor route?
I won’t have a car. Also, I’ll probably run in the afternoon / evening (ick) since the sessions start pretty early. I don’t think I can fit in 15 before 7AM.
Pacific Coast Tri race report
That’s the only pic (aside of the finish one I posted earlier) that I took at the triathlon. I noticed that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE but me racked their bike by the seat. I’ve always racked mine by the handlebars. Eh.
TL;DR, I had a really good race! I’m happy with how I did. Times at the end.
