How James proposed to Lily

It was in the middle of November and James and Lily were out on a mission given by the order of the Phoenix that day (it was also the first time they barely escaped from Voldemort). As the couple fought valiantly against the abundant number of death eaters, only one thing was on James’s mind which was to keep Lily safe. After managing to distract the death eaters by using bombarda to a huge rock, sending debris to fly off everywhere, James and Lily had managed to apparate from the area and landed safely on soft grass. It was wet and cold, and above them, a multitude of stars were illuminating the area along with the crescent-shaped moon. James glanced at Lily, who was looking at the midnight blue blanket filled with diamonds above them. It was at that moment when he knew it was time. Hurriedly, he stood up and brushed the dirt off his dark blue jeans and set off to find a flower— a certain flower. “James? Where are you going?” He could hear the faint voice of his girlfriend calling him, but James ignored.  After a long period of time, he’d managed to find the one flower he needed (actually he gave up and just conjured it with magic but lily didn’t have to know that). After moulding it into the shape he wanted, he hid it behind his back and went back to Lily, who was now sitting on the same area, looking up at the sky. He crept up behind her and inhaled her strawberry-scented shampoo. It smelled so good even after hours of running away from the death eaters, and James was grateful for the scent. It made him feel safe. Tucking the flower in his back pocket, he wrapped his arms around her tiny waist and peppered her cheek with kisses. He could feel her smiling and ended up grinning at her. “I’m so glad you’re safe,” he murmured, burying his face in his hair. “I’m glad you’re not dead,” she replied. With a sigh, James reluctantly let go of her and leaned his back against an oak tree that was beside Lily. She turned to look at him as he observed her features. Describing her as ‘pretty’ wasn’t quite it, he thought. Lily was divine; she was beautiful. Even though the couple had been dating ever since the beginning of their seventh year when James Potter miraculously managed to convince the girl of his dreams, Lily Evans to go out with him and shocked the entire school, he still couldn’t believe that she was his, and he was hers. He realised that he must’ve been staring at her for far too long as he noticed her cocking her neck to one side, a playful smile on her lips. Fuck, he thought as he stared at those gorgeous pair of pale pink lips, I could snog her all day. Focus, James. “Lily…I’ve been thinking,” he began hesitantly, and noticed that it had perked his girlfriend’s interest. “What is it, James?” she asked. Feeling nervous, something James Potter rarely felt, he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly and bit his lip. How was he supposed to do this? Was he supposed to just ask her bluntly? Or was there something a guy needed to do before asking? Screw it, he thought after a while. He’d rather get over and done with this, unlike his best friend Remus Lupin, who would’ve thought a little deeper before doing something. He wasn’t as rational as him (seriously where’s the fun in doing that?) and finally broke the silence. “Lily, I know we’ve been through a lot ever since I met you at the age of eleven in that cubicle on the train. I know the little things about you so well, like how you would always stick your tongue out during Potions or crease your forehead during History because you really wanted to pay attention to Binns even though we all knew he was as boring as a life of a rock…” Lily chuckled at James’s attempt to crack a joke. “James, just get to the point already.” He blinked and looked at her while she played with the grass and never breaking eye contact with him. Just breathe, James. You can do it.

What’s life without a little risk? His best friend and brother-by-choice, Sirius Black would always say that before they played pranks on people at Hogwarts. Oh how he missed those days so much.

Slowly, he took out the make-shift ring made out of lilies he’d shrunk to fit her tiny finger out of his pocket and laid it out in his palm. He noticed her eyes widening, a small and quiet gasp leaving her mouth as her alluring green eyes stared at it as if it were a weapon they could use to kill Voldemort. The white lilies were looking brighter than ever and it was making James’s hand feel heavy as time passed by. Both of them were standing on time’s periphery and James wondered when Lily would break the silence. He kept glancing from her to the ring back and forth, beginning to feel worried about her missing reaction. “Yes.” That was all she said after a few minutes of silence, her voice croaking as if she hadn’t drank in years. “What?” He asked hoarsely, feeling taken aback at the sudden voice. He had almost fallen to the grass as that one word had hit him like a huge gust of wind, sending him off with no control of his movement. Lily rolled her eyes and smiled adorably at him. “I said yes, Potter. You were about to propose to me, right?” “Er…yes?” He replied and laughed nervously. “But I haven’t 'popped the question’ yet.” “I knew it was a big mistake of introducing muggle shows to you,” she rolled her eyes pursed her lips, but he knew she was joking. “Oh wow, would you look at that. The tables have turned. Really Evans, we’re having a serious conversation over here. Do try to be serious for once even though I know you lack that capability,” he used an old quote from her and she slapped his arm in retaliation. “Don’t use my words against me, Potter. You were being an annoying prat that day along with Sirius,” she threatened emptily as the memory slowly replayed in their heads. James chuckled and stood up, Lily following suit. Then, he bent down on one knee, and held out the ring, ready to slide it into the only finger that mattered. “Lily Evans, since I know you are one impatient woman and I will go straight to the point, will you marry me?” He asked and waited with bated breath. “Yes,” she replied with no evidence of hesitation. “Yes, I will marry you, James Potter.” With his hands shaking, he slid the ring made of tiny lilies along her ring finger and when it finally made it to the end, he picked her up and twirled her around with indescribable feelings and the engaged couple danced throughout the night to no end, feeling blissful and at peace for once that day.

sometimes i forget how reading is just. marvelous. just an absolutely fucking endlessly joyful activity. i’ll go about my life and not read one single book for months and be like why am i morose! why am i so apathetic! what is missing here!!!! and try to look for whatever it is that is lacking and never find it anywhere and i get so tired and sad and angry, and then i’m finally like i’m gonna stop everything for a couple days and read a really good book bc i don’t care about anything else. and suddenly i get motivated to work bc i know i’ll read when i’m on break. i get more creative. i want to watercolor again and bust out the shameful fabric stash with all my unfinished sewing projects. god even my dreams get more vivid!! what the fuck! and i’m like here is the magic i was looking for, why did i ever think i was going to find it anywhere else. it was always here!!!
