I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your father, Mark. Is there a cause he cared about that interested Question Marks could donate to in his honor?

Avatar

He suffered from Alzheimer's which is truly a horrible condition. My dad would have been appreciative of anyone donating to a group connected to Alzheimer's, especially one working on finding medical solutions to it.

Condolences on your loss. Also, and possibly a bit jarring, have a happy Passover. (If you follow the traditional rules for sitting shiva, the holiday cuts it short.)

Avatar

Thank you. We're not following a traditional shiva. And I already bought my matzah.

My condolences for the loss of your father.

I believe it's important to talk about loss and death. My grandfather is in hospital, and is nearing the end too. I can see how generational devides about how to handle this sitiation are causing some tensions, and I hope you're able to get the support you need.

Avatar

Thanks. I do have lots of support.

I actually listened to the podcast with your dad right before hearing the news. It was a good one and I thought it was funny when he brought up the black lotus you got from him. Hope you and your family are doing well ✌️

Avatar

We’re doing okay. My dad loved to tease me about the Black Lotus, but he was actually very happy for me to have it. (Listen to the podcast for the full story.)

In honor of your father's passing, could you give us a short list of your favorite fathers in Magic?

Avatar

Both Teferi and Angrath seemed like really good fathers. I also really liked Barrin as a character, although not the best of fathers.

Avatar

Hi Mark, I just saw the note about your father. I hope the Magic community can provide you with as much support as you have given to all of us over the years.

Avatar

They have. I have had nothing but supportive responses. There was even a Reddit post where all the replies were nice. : )

I'm sorry for your loss, Mark. You are responsible for bringing so much joy to so many people. I'm sure your father was very proud of you! Hope as time passes the pain of the loss is replaced by the gratitude for all the great memories you have from him!

Avatar

My dad was super proud of me. He talks about it a little in the podcast.

Avatar

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure he'd be proud of you imparting your passion and knowledge to us just like he did for you. He's influenced a lot of people through you. I hope you can find peace and comfort in this difficult time.

Avatar

I’m going to write an article about the many things I learned from him that influenced me as a game designer.

So sorry about your father, sending so much love ❤️

Avatar

Thanks. The outpouring here has been very touching.

Avatar

My best wishes to you and your family, Mark. RIP grandpa. I lost my grand father a few years back, hope you remember yours as I do mine, always with a smile! Today more than ever, thanks for all your hard work and what you have given us, Mark

I have great memories with my Dad. We had a wonderful relationship. If you haven’t listened to the podcast with him I linked to in my announcement of his death, give it a listen. You can hear our rapport.

Avatar

Sorry to hear about your dad. I hope you and your family is doing as well as possible.

We are. We lost him to Alzheimer’s, so the grief of losing him has been stretched out over time. My first thought in hearing that he died was relief as his last few months were not how he wanted to live. Still very sad though.
