Once upon a time I thought a grimoire and book of shadows were the same. So just be aware they are different. The book of shadows is all your knowledge and spells and witch writings. Your grimoire should only contain your most treasured information.
Start with your Book of Shadows! Then move what knowledge you treasure most to your Grimoire
Your book of shadows doesn’t have to be fancy, and while many prefer it, neither does your grimoire. My current book of shadows is a 3 ring binder because I like to move the pages and arrange them and add dividers.
You can have multiple books of shadows and grimoires. I recommend having one of each that is your main though. (Well, multiple volumes if you love writing)
It doesn’t have to look pretty, but you can definitely make them fancy. I’ve seen some witches jot down their thoughts with a pencil and go. I’ve seen witches almost ritualize writing, with a fancy pen and lit candles.
You can press flowers, add sticky notes, fold pages, highlight, write notes in margins, make them yours.
Your book of shadows and grimoire are for you. Your aesthetic doesn’t have to please anyone but you. Do what work for you, and ignore what doesn’t
Feel free to get inspiration for your grimoire, but don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t “living up to that” your book is for you!

~THE BASIC TOOLS OF A WITCH~ **tools do not need to be used but make casting easer and this is not a complete list, as different paths have there own lists.
THE CHALICE the chalice is often made of silver, tho it can be made of any material. It is associated with water, and feminine energies.
THE CAULDRON A tool of fire, often used to burn offerings , fire magic, or mixing potions. Many use cast iron cauldrons as cooking vessels.
DOWSING RODS A divination tool often used to find lost objects or find underground water for well making.
MAGICAL JOURNAL A magical journal often called a book of shadows due to pop culture , often used to keep a log of magical experiences, practices and recipes. Many believe the power of the written word, I personally believe that there’s more power in writing down it all by hand. You can use you book any way you want and name it what you want. It’s supposed to be personal and over the years you may have a series of books written by you.
THE WAND A can be made with a verity of materials as well, many use certain woods and crystals while others use copper. They have masculine energies and considered tools of fire/ air. THE ATHAME A double sided blade that is never to be used to cut any physical surface. The Athame is usually considered to be a tool of air/fire. Used to direct energy , it is masculine THE BESOM A broomstick it combines both masculine and feminine energies, used to “sweep away unwanted energies” never to be used for mundane but only for the magical, or else you risk loosing any magical power stores in it. THE SMOKE FAN Used to move magical energies in a space, a tool of air as it can be used in combination with sage for a cleansing ritual.
~BASIC TOOL CONSECRATION~ Prior to consecration I rub the wand with fresh lavender ,eucalyptus or mint leaves. When I consecrate my tools I hold the tool (wand) in my hand and visualize it absorbing my energies, then I purify the tool( wand) from its old energies with the elements , I choose to use the smoke method. While I smoke cleanse the wand I usually say aloud a blessing of the elements. Elemental blessing: I HOLD IN MY HANDS THE (tool), WHICH I DEDICATE AS A TOOL OF THE (name of element) ELEMENT. So I did this spell jar for me and my ex boyfriend, as crazy as that sounds. We still have feelings for each other- he clarified his to me a week or so ago- and still flirt with each other at work. I want to be with him still, although he feels he isn’t good enough for me. HE TOTALLY IS BTW HE’S PERFECT TO ME.
So, to help nudge things toward the ‘getting back together’ path, I made this concoction!

Start with the basic ingredients:
- Lavender (I dried and crushed mine, you don't have to) for relaxation, sleep, & a clear mind.
- Rosemary for clarity & improved memory
- Amethyst for calming, peace, relaxation, psychic dreams, & wisdom
- Rose petals (I crawled under my neighbors rosebush to get some that were already dried by the earth. This is optional. If you have your own rosebush, you may use that instead) for dream retention & peace.
- A purple candle for psychic dreams & dream retention.
- A small glass jar (I got mine from Dollar Tree. It came in a pack of 7, hell yeah)
(The rosemary is not pictured, but you can see the sprig in the first picture. The lavender is in that mortar & pestle)
Prepare to do witchcraft. (Cleanse, ground, open a circle, all that good stuff)
Light the candle
Have the amethyst supervise lend its energy to your spell, use it to charge each ingredient as you add them to the jar.
You can add words to this if you want, but it didn't feel neccessary for me, personally.
Pour the wax from the candle on top of the jar. It's really hard to aim but it's easy to clean up & it doesn't hurt to get it on your skin. It happens.
Be sure to close your circle when you're finished.
Try to take cute pictures of the jar while your beautiful cat pouts in the background because you won't let him eat the rosemary or yeet the crystal across the room. This step is very important.
Spiritual waters, or eaux in French perfumery, are solutions of fragrant essential oils combined with distilled water and some degree of perfumer’s alcohol or grain alcohol, with or without the addition of other fragrant substances. Often they are charged with odorous principles of flowers (i.e. Eau de Rose). They originated in the South of France or Italy, and were transported to New Orleans with the earliest perfumers. By far, the most popular of spiritual waters in the various magickal traditions is Florida water. Florida water is the American answer to Eau de Cologne, or Cologne Water. Originally valued as a unisex cologne, Florida water was preferable to other, stronger smelling perfumes. It was used in copious amounts in barbershops as aftershave and cologne. Florida water shares the same citrus base as Cologne water, but has the addition of sweet orange (rather than the lemon and neroli of the original Cologne Water), and adds spicy notes, including lavender and clove. According to the current trademark holders, Lanman & Kemp Barclay, Florida Water was introduced by the New York City perfumer (and founder of the original company) Robert Murray in 1808. The company states that their product, now sold under the Murray & Lanman brand, still uses the original 1808 formula, and that the current label is also a slightly modified version of the 1808 original.
In the 1880s and 1890s, Murray & Lanman Florida Water was advertised as “The Richest of all Perfumes” and “The Most Popular Perfume in the World." Although now obscure to most of the general American population, Florida Water remained popular among South American and Caribbean cultures. It was incorporated into magical and ritual traditions, including hoodoo.
Florida Water is popular among South American shamen, where it is believed the plant spirits of the Amazon love sweet-smelling perfumes. Thus, one way to achieve protection from malevolent spirits is to wear sweet scents and perfumes such as Florida water as a guard against evil. Shamen will often supercharge their Florida water by adding chopped camphor, tobacco, camalonga seeds and other botanicals and drink it to achieve perfumed breathe that allows them to blow upon inflictions and remove them.
In Hoodoo, Florida Water is used in spiritual cleansings and home protection. It can be worn on the body, used as an ingredient in magical works or by itself as a cologne, put in the bath water and misted in the environment to purify it. In fact, there are so many ways Florida Water can be used it is no wonder it remains a favorite spiritual water among practitioners.
Here are thirty ways Florida water can be used to make your life more enjoyable.
1. Enhance cleansings: Add to spiritual baths to enhance spiritual cleansings.
2. Protection cologne: Wear as a cologne for a protective shield that leaves a delicate scent.
3. Repel negativity: Mist in the environment to repel negative energy and negative spirits.
4. Attract good spirits: Mist in the environment to attract good spirits.
5. Add to floor washes: Add to floor washes for its cleansing and blessing properties.
6. Use as an offering: Place a bottle on your altar as an offering to the Spirits.
7. Wash lodestones: Use to wash a pair of lodestones in preparation for use.
8. Ancestral offering: Add a few drops to a bowl of water and place on your ancestral altar as an offering to your ancestors.

13. Anti-anxiety relief: For high anxiety it can be applied to the forehead and used as a rubdown, providing some relief for nervous tension.
14. Cleanse and bless candles: Use to cleanse and bless candles prior to use (be sure the candles are completely dry before lighting). *CAUTION: Florida Water is highly flammable. Use extreme caution when working with it.
15. Cleanse ritual tools: Use to wipe down altars and altar items to keep free from negative energy.
16. Spirit communication: Pour a little in a cast iron pot or cauldron and light it to aid in spirit communication through fire.
17. Energize money works: Pour a little in a cast iron pot or cauldron and light it, then place your hands over the flames warming them before engaging in money drawing activities like working and gambling.
18. Holy water: Pray the 23rd Psalm over it and use in place of Holy Water.
19. Spirit receptivity: Periodically spray a little on your altar to keep it receptive to the spirits.
20. Dream work: Place some in a crystal bowl with spring water next to your bed for prophetic dreams.
21. Attraction spray: Combine basil and patchouli essential oils, Florida water and a lodestone to a spray bottle for a wonderful attraction spray.
22. Foot bath: Use in foot washings by adding to a tub of water, washing the feet with the Florida water enhanced foot bath, then anointing the feet with rose oil while praying the 23rd Psalm.
23. Hair rinse: Add to rinse water after shampooing to clear the head of heavy thoughts.
24. Face spritz: Keep in a spray bottle in the refrigerator for a rejuvenating face spritz during the hot days of summer.
25. Doll Baby Baptism: Use to baptize doll babies by sprinkling on the doll’s head.
26. Laundry rinse: Add a quarter cup to your laundry rinse water to both cleanse and bless your clothes.
27. Scrying jar: Pour 1/2 Florida Water into a jar half filled with river water and use for divination.
28. Pendulum rinse: Use to rinse pendulums after readings to clear and prepare them for subsequent readings.
29. Bless animal companions: Anoint your furry friend’s foreheads with just a dab to bless them.
Bind and Banish a Toxic or Dangerous Person aka B+B
(Sigil composed of individual elements mostly from “Ritual Body Art: Drawing the Spirit,” by Charles Arnold. This is not intended as body art. Included elements represent, respectively, a toxic person, repulsion, poison, obstacle, disruption, defense, interference, constraint, and the act of countering an attack.)
Materials: black candle fireproof dish sharp tool red thread photo or other depiction of the person you want to B+B writing utensil
Recommended colors: black (banishing,) white (power,) red (protection/binding.)
Charm: Bind and banish, catch and snare, fade away and be blessed elsewhere; bind [person’s name] and their power tight, send them away from my/my people’s sight; and it harm none, so mote it be: keep [person’s name] far from mine and me.
Spell: Draw the sigil depicted above over a photo or representation of the person in question.
Write the above charm on the back of the picture. Wrap the picture around a black candle carved with the name of the person in question. (Remember that photo paper is very flammable and be careful if you’re using it; any type of paper will do, though.) Bind the photo to the candle with red thread and tie with 4 knots (4 is the number of stability and protection, but you can alternately use 5 if the person is actively harming others and you want to bring in the warrior energy of Mars.)
Secure the candle on a fireproof surface (a metal dish, a stone plate, a flat piece of thick glass, a mirror, etc.) by melting some of its base into a pool of wax and pressing it in place. Light the candle and repeat the charm three times, increasing focus, picturing the person in question encircled in binding red thread. Allow the candle (and the attached picture and thread) to burn out completely. (If the paper has difficulty catching, it’s okay to help it along by way of a match or lighter.) Separate the ashes and scatter them outside.
If the subject of the spell is female, replace the central figure of the sigil with this:

Second Method: Consecrate the ingredients with incense or herb smoke (feel free to pass job applications through the smoke as well.) Picture your intentions and then combine the ingredients in a vial with olive oil. Repeat incantation if you’d like.

Wear oil to job interviews or other business endeavors if you’d like! Let the candles burn out if you use them, and feel free to do other workings as well. This spell would work best during the waxing and/or full moon.

TO JINX- say it three times out loud, or say a word the same time as someone else
TO MANIPULATE - use wax, use poppets, or tie several strings to pieces of an effect
TO BENEFIT - light a candle, charge a crystal, or create a talisman
