And just like that, their family grew from three to four. It was Christmas Eve and baby Charlie was twelve days old. They once again decided to celebrate alone this year, citing a new baby as the reason. They loved their families, but there would be talk of the war. Baby Charlie gave them the opportunity to stay ignorant, if only for a while.

Charlie is Bill’s opposite in every way with regards to newborn behavior. Where Bill was easygoing, Charlie was turbulent. He cried constantly, and was very difficult to soothe.  Despite this, Molly had still managed to complete everyone’s sweaters this year.

Arthur had put up and decorated the tree while Molly took a nap with Charlie. It was not the artful tree trimming it had been in years previous, but Molly still cites it as the most beautiful Christmas tree she has ever seen. Arthur even had Bill string popcorn and cranberries to place on the tree. They left the bottom branches mostly empty to eliminate the risk of broken glass should Bill get too curious.

This was the first year that Bill was really interested in or excited for gifts, and not just the gifts he would receive. He had spent hours drawing pictures and making cards and collecting items to give to his brother and parents. Molly had to guide him somewhat with Charlie’s gift, to ensure it was not something that would be dangerous. His gifts for his parents were a complete surprise to them on Christmas morning.

Arthur and Molly had scraped enough money together to provide a stack of gifts for Bill, including books, stuffed toys, and magical creature figurines. On Christmas, Bill spent the entire afternoon playing with these. Molly had received a stack of drawings from Bill, as well as a handful of pine cones. Bill had given his father a similar stack of drawings and some biscuits that Bill had been sneaking for a few weeks.

Although Charlie was too young to really enjoy them, Molly and Arthur had gotten him several picture books with stories of magical creatures, as well as a few stuffed toys. Bill was beyond excited to show Charlie the drawings he’d made for him, and to Molly and Arthur’s surprise, Charlie stopped fussing and watched his brother intently.

Charlie’s gift to the family was a full night of sleep.

This is so sweet and I can definitely see all those traits in Charlie and his siblings!

Can we make this canon? This is amazing and heartwarming to see that Charlie had such an impact on his siblings' lives 💙
