she laughs, “i hope so & if we need snacks we can always get my brother to do snack runs for us.” the only issue with that was getting charlie to actually do it. the preteen boy seemed fond of telling just about everyone that asked him to get something to do it themselves. liv pulls the project syllabus out of her binder & lays it between them. she thinks over the suggestion for a moment, “3D would be cool but I don’t think we have the technology for it & I’m not sure my dad would allow us in his lab because he has ~” she drops her pencil on the book and puts air quotes around the next few words,” ‘dangerous substances’ & ‘chemicals’ in there & we could get hurt.”

“yah, i guess so. i mean... i was sort of thinking old school 3D. like we find a bunch of toy dinosaurs and trees from lego sets or something but... 2D works perfectly fine.” a light laugh falls from elena’s lips at the girls sarcasm & air quotes. though, honestly if there are dangerous chemicals in her fathers lab elena didn’t exactly want to be anywhere near it. “we don’t need a 3D diagram to get an A or anything like that, so we should be fine.” honestly, elena was probably more concerned about her grades than her own mother was, but maybe that was because she knew elena pushed herself enough for the both of them & wouldn’t dare to come home with a bad mark. except that one history test which was intentional... but only to prove a point. “got colored pencils or something like that?”

olivia smiles, bouncing her pencil on her notebook before writing down the idea. “thanks.” her cheeks darken slightly, grateful that elena was on board with the idea. most peers that she’d been paired with often wanted to take an easier route, often citing that they didn’t have time to work on the project, leaving olivia to do all the work while they take the easier than pie, A. it made her day, knowing she’s working with someone who cared about their grades just as much as she did. “we can work on it together. we’d get it done much faster that way. i was thinking we could maybe lay them out like a timeline, connecting them all in an easy transition.”
Image

elena was pleased that olivia wanted to work together. that was always the best part about partner projects. not about dividing the work. ever since carmen had to leave she hadn’t had too much of that. although, that last project of theirs had only been a decoy. this project would be a good way to go out of middle school with. “that’s great! and i’ll help with more than just snacks.’ she adds, sarcastically. a laugh follows, almost a snort, hopefully the sarcasm had come through. she’s still a little awkward, but it’s her. “anyway, timeline works. are we just drawing the diagram or did you want it to be 3D, because that’d be awesome, but also might be a lot of work.”

“So we have the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era. I was thinking, for this report, we could maybe make a diorama of each of the sub periods, the Neocomian, Gallic & Senonian, depicting the height of the dinosaurs, the radical changes in the landscape & the untimely demise of the dinosaurs & the end of the Mesozoic?” She suggests, glancing up from her notebook.

WOW FINALLY a partner that was up to her standards. she wouldn’t have to do all the work by herself this time.”you know, that sounds great!” she pulls open her textbook to make note of where these different things are located so they have something to go off for heights, landscapes, etc. “so how do you wanna do this? should we divvy up the sub periods or... we could work on all of them together?”

schuyler opened her notebook to a clean piece of paper and wrote the problem down. she’s never been good with numbers, she could barely remember her own or her parents’. combine that with some letters and she’s hopeless. but she needs to learn this. she has to learn this algebra stuff or else she’ll be reduced to a life of name calling and people calling her IQ into question the same way they did with her father and the rest of the Tomas branch.
“okay, i think the first step with solving this is to move all terms containing x to the left and all other terms to the right so i’d minus 3x from each side?” she looks up from her notebook, “am i on the right track?”
image

elena watch attentively. she kept her calm & patience with the other girl, knowing that was the best way to approach this. “correct.” a small smile graced elena’s features, there was some hope for this being successful. “yep.” she reaffirmed. “on the right track.” so far, so good. she wasn’t sure how long the train would stay on those tracks but sometimes you jsut had to let people realize they actually knew what they were doing - right? “go ahead and do that.”

“i don’t understand why they can’t? they’re the ones who created the problem so they should be the ones to solve it.” she points out, taking a seat at the table. waiting a few moments before she pulls out her purple notebook, math book, and her nearly empty mechanical pencil. schuyler had broken her calculator two days after getting it so she just brings out her phone. she saw no sense in buying a new one when her phone has a perfectly good one. “i don’t think anyone is. i think they just like to think they are. “i think he said i need to work on algebraic equations and to stop coping off my brother’s homework.”
Image

“algebraic equations? okay let’s start there.” she advised, pulling the other girls text book towards her she flips to the index to find out where the chapter is at before turning to it. she quickly skims over the page and then turns to the homework portion of the chapter. “okay. i always find it easiest to learn math by actually doing so... first off i just want to ask how much.” if anything. “you know about algebraic equations. anything at all, regardless of tactics for find a solution but NOT anything irrelevant like an opinion.” she then pushes the book back to the girl pointing to an equation 5x - 6 = 3x - 8 . “then write this down.”
