re: "goyim"

This blog is for everyone, regardless of language which may read as religiously/ethnically exclusive. Jewish identity issues come up here, because I am simultaneously a Jewish Person and a Jewish Historian. Readers will approach me and relate to me within both of those contexts, but the language readers use have nothing to do with who is and is not "allowed" to engage with my content. Or phrased differently: jumblr and I are chill, but I am not a jumblr blog; I am a Public History blog, and this is a pluralistic space.

There are no posts which certain groups are unwelcome to reblog. If I don't want reblogs or certain types of engagement, I will a. disable reblogs; or b. make my boundaries extremely clear in the text of the post in question. Or I'll just be a massive c*** to the anti-Semites and TERFs which are the usual sources of nonsense I deal with over here.

Didn’t even realize today was Yom HaShoah because 1) baby when you’re with me every day is Yom HaShoah and 2) I have fucking covid.

Anyway, Zivia Lubetkin and Yitzhak Zuckerman refused to be Ben Gurion’s stooges, and Holocaust memory/remembrance is not the ideological property of the State of Israel.

it's fucking shameful how the anti-semites on this site have jewish users so fucking scared that they (plural, VERY FUCKING PLURAL) have to ask me to answer their DMs privately. These DMs contain nothing messy or controversial. Literally just stuff like "Thank you for articulating XYZ it means a lot as a Jewish user." And multiple users are SCARED to say that to me publicly.

I'd like for these assholes harassing Jewish users to feel ashamed, but, as a Modern Jewish and Holocaust Historian, I know these anti-Semites most likely feel righteous. They always convince themselves that they're righteous while The Jews are ones:

Okay this shouldn't need to be fucking said but don't attack, harrass, or blame jewish people over shit just being jewish

For clarification I not jewish and I am very pro-palestine but don't attack normal people over the shit the IOF and Israeli government are doing or over conspiracys you might have heard, Normal jewish people are not the people you need to convince or attack it's the government of countries continuing to support Israel

Blaming normal civilians is not the goal and it only helps propaganda

No it shouldn't need to be said. I'm a Holocaust historian who works on Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, and I should be able to post about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising without snide assholes slipping in and leaving comments like BUT NOW YOU'RE DOING THE SAME EXACT THING IN GAZA as if I, an American Jewish woman, have any actual influence of the military of a country on the other side of the world.

As an American Jewish historian, all I should have to say is "I'm not Israeli and my work has little to do with the topic. I do not support the military goals of any nation state, including Israel." But instead it's been 7 fucking months of constant shit over here like I'm Netanyahu's personal spokesperson. My followers have been harassed and told to "kill themselves" for publicly asking me questions. i'm having to DM people and tell them to delete their replies because i don't want them to deal with anti-Semitic abuse. I appreciate your voice here, and I hope you're calling in your movement, and doing everything you can to make it a safe space for the participation of Jews who support Palestinian human and civil rights. Most of us ("us" in this context being Jewish people who are deeply concerned for Palestinian human and civil rights) do that in our own specific movements because the general ones are filled with assholes spewing Cossack-level anti-Semitism.

me, in the comments of every fb post i see regarding american jewish history:

"American Jews are not responsible for the actions of a country on the other side of the world. Check you anti-Semitism, and stop using Palestinian lives as a prop for your bigotry."

posting it here for anyone who wants a script for dealing with the type of individual who would post material requiring a response of this nature.

just some unhinged shitposting

ok so i'm watching US Ghosts, and this plotline with Isaac demanding half of Sam's publisher's advance for the book she wrote about him was driving me crazy but THEN I was like, what if some random 18th cousin left me Lohamei HaGeta'ot and I moved there and had a near death experience and I could see ghosts and suddenly Zivia Lubetkin demanded half my advance money? I wouldn't think twice. And then she'd make me reinvest it into the kibbutz and I'd just be like "yes qween thank u qween."

Genuine question cause I've been seeing posts of this nature on my dash. Why is this the focus? When we have a clear perpetrator and clear victims, why do we need to focus on how to heal the perpetrators (Zionist Israelis) as they are still harming people (Palestinians) and not actively removing the club from their hand

This is a history blog written by an American Jewish Holocaust historian who is concerned with memory and attitudes within her own community, and this is what I choose to write about in relation to my observations of the discourse surrounding recent events.

You're seeing posts of this nature because people like you are going around leaving comments implying that all Jews are right wing Israelis complicit in murdering babies in Gaza, and it's traumatizing us. Because that is rhetoric which has been violently deployed against us for centuries. You're seeing posts of this nature because people like you are going around policing the conversations Jewish creators choose to have in relation to their lived experiences since Oct 7. We would love not to be having these conversations, but we have to, because of users like you.

I am presently choosing to use my knowledge as a historian to call in parts of my community, and help explain some of our communal responses to things to outsiders. If you would like to see me screaming about how much I h8 Israel and what a Good, Righteous, anti-Zionist Left Wing Jew I am, there are plenty of posts like that. And if you don't like what I write about on my history blog as an American Jewish Holocaust historian, then don't follow me.

Finally, I don't believe that this WAS a genuine question. It's so cartoonishly stepped in hostile, anti-Semitic, fifth-columnist, global JudeoZionist hivemind undertones and assumptions that it's difficult to believe it wasn't intentional. Also your blog only has one post. But, in case you are being genuine, please understand that people just like you are the reason why Jews like me and so many of the Jews who follow this blog feel deeply unsafe participating in non-Jewish pro-Palestinian activist spaces.

Reblogging mostly because I’m very petty and still pissed, but also because, if this was a genuine question, it serves as a good object lesson.

Here’s the whole video. It’s called “Don’t Be A Sucker” and it’s 17 minutes long.

don’t just scroll past this actually watch it, it’s only 2 minutes long. If you re-recorded this today word for word with modern actors and places, it wouldn’t even look out of place as a PSA

300,000 notes and i can’t find a transcript

Transcript: (sorry for the language!)

Speaker: “I see negroes holding jobs that belong to me! And you! I’ll ask you, if we allow this thing to go on, what’s gonna become of us real Americans!”

Hungarian man with clear foreign accent: “I’ve heard this kind of talk before, but I never expected to hear it in America.”

Young man: “This man seems to know what he’s talking about.“

Speaker: “What are us real Americans gonna do about it? You’ll find it right here in this little pamphlet—the truth about negroes and foreigners! The truth about the Catholic Church! You’ll find…” [audio grows quieter as camera shifts to the onlookers]

Hungarian man: “You believe in that kind of talk?“

Young man: “I dunno, it makes pretty good sense to me.“

Speaker: “And I tell you, friends, we’ll never be able to call this country our own until it’s a country without… without what?“

Other man: “Yeah? Without what?“

Speaker: “Without negroes, without alien foreigners,”—the young man is nodding, following along—“without Catholics, without Freemasons! You know these…“

Young man: “What’s wrong with the Masons, I’m a Mason.” Looks to European man worriedly, “hey, that fellow’s talking about me!“

Huungarian man: “And that makes a difference, doesn’t it.“

Speaker: “These are your enemies! These are the people who are trying to take over our country! Now you know them, you know what they stand for. And it’s up to you and me to fight them!” A bunch of the onlookers in the vicinity wave him off like he’s crazy and turn away, “fight them and destroy them before they destroy us!”

Speaker: “Thank you.“

One man in the now somewhat awkward crowd: “claps“

Young man: *is visibly uncomfortable*

Hungarian man: “Before he said Mason, you were ready to agree with him.”

Young man: “Well yes but, he was talking about… what about those other people?“ *the pair sit down on a park bench*

Hungarian man: “In this country, we have no ‘other people.’ We are American people, of course.“

Young man: “What about you? You aren’t American, are you?“

Hungarian man: “I was born in Hungary. But now, I am an American citizen. And I have seen what this kind of talk can do. I saw it in Berlin.”

Young man: “What were you doing there?“

Hungarian man: “I was a professor at the university. I heard the same words we have heard today. But I was a fool, then. I thought Nazis were crazy people, stupid fanatics. But unfortunately it was not so. You see, they knew that they were not strong enough to conquer a unified country, so they split Germany into small groups. They used prejudice as a practical weapon to cripple the nation.”

Hey sorry if this is weird but I just wanted to thank you for being a voice of reason in all of this.

Thank you, and you're welcome!

I spent such a huge part of my teens and early 20s* being extremely emotional and unreasonable about this topic (I once had a panic attack, made a scene, and stormed out of my International Issues Journalism class), so I'm glad that time, education, and ~wisdom~ have smoothed all that out into something helpful, fair, and comprehensible.

*That includes the early years of this blog. I didn't discuss the topic because I knew I couldn't do it reasonably, fairly, or responsibly lmao.

pixeljade: #it IS very much a complex issue and I feel like saying that has been pissing off a lot of folks on both sides #one fact i would add to the table is that the current actions against palestine DO constitute a genocide by definition #its a word i hear pro-Israel people get very upset by because they think it is inherently comparing this to the holocaust #but its not. some people DO and thats its own discussion. but calling it a “genocide” is simply accurate and undeniable

Speaking as someone who was that pro-Israel person in her teens and very early 20s, the reactions you're describing are 800% cognitive dissonance freak outs. Most of these people, like me, received either directly or indirectly from their Elders in the Jewish community a very trauma-induced and deeply emotional information about the history of this situation, which boils down to: "They tried to kill us all once and they didn't now we finally have returned to the Promised Land, the only place we have to shield ourselves against It Happening Again. Israel's detractors hate that Jews can defend themselves now, and if any of them, including the Palestinians, were to have their way, they'd see us all dead. We must defend ourselves at all costs, and not let anyone ever put us in existential danger as a people ever again."

And then to have some rando 19 year old who knows jack shit about your or your community or your community's trauma to get up in your face and start screaming at you about genocide? It's only going to trigger that intergenerational trauma, and cause the party being screamed at to dig deeper into their defensive, cognitive-dissonance fueled response. Which, if we were to boil that response down to a thought process, looks like "This person hates me and all Jews. They think we're a hive mind who don't deserve to live. Thank G-d for Israel."

What's complex, is that not everything in that trauma response is wrong, and not everything the dumbass 19 yo who has no interest in unpacking their own learned anti-Semitism was wrong.

Israel's actions towards Palestinian Arabs since 1948 does fit several definitions of genocide and/or ethnic cleansing. And many of the Westerners who scream about it the loudest are fairly openly anti-Semitic.

Now, as someone with big Holocaust intergenerational trauma in her family, I am sympathetic to the Jewish kid in this scenario. But cognitive dissonance is just that: the domain of a child. Adults understand that cognitive dissonance is a little voice in our head telling us "Hey comrade our discomfort with this is a little much. Maybe this is a learning opportunity?"

I mean, that's what I did. But it's difficult. Its uncomfortable, and that scares people. It's much easier to believe that "They call it the Naqba because they hate us and think our survival and access to national self-determination is a disaster,"* than it is to understand that "They call it the Naqba because it was the near total dispossession and ethnic cleansing of Palestinian Arab populations from their generational homes and properties."

And again, everything I'm saying here is a result of my journey from a hardcore Zionist-in-the-contemporary-sense child (though always left in terms of domestic US Politics), to a grown Holocaust historian who understands that Israel is no better and no worse than all the other nation states (for new readers, I understand the nation-state as a political entity, the logical end point of which is genocide and/or ethnic cleansing), and openly criticizes it on those grounds.

*A rabbi in a youth group I belonged to told me this almost verbatim when I was 15. And when you're 15 and somebody tells you they love you you're gonna believe them.

Just fyi for anti-Semites people who refuse to grasp the diversity of Jewish political views and actions. Because we’re not a hive mind.
