the choice to put annabeth in luke's confessions scene was... uh.. yeah. i see what they were trying to do, but given that percy's worry about annabeth and the choices she would make when it comes to luke should until literally the moment he hands the knife over in tlo.. i'm having a hard time justifying it.

annabeth is supposed to believe in luke. she's supposed to give him every chance. she is the humanity speaking to percy when he nears its edge. she is the hope and the faith and yeah maybe it might be a bit naive or "unwise" but luke is her brother. luke is the family that cared about her, that saw her and listened to her. out of anyone, annabeth knows just how good of a guy luke can be--has been.

if we allow her to commit her entire heart and loyalty to percy (over luke) this early on, then we lose so much nuance in annabeth's character--something the show has already been doing, which leaves her so much flatter than she deserves to be.

and not only that, but we also lose the opportunity for her, four seasons from now, to insist that there's still enough good in luke to defeat kronos. atp i think if they still play that scene the same way, they will insist that it was because of annabeth's wisdom and perception, which feels like a cop out if i ever heard one.

annabeth's heart is so big and it pulls the series along from start to finish and it feels like such a disservice to her the way the series is diminishing that

You know how everyone has heard a slightly different version of the same Greek myth? Like there’s a version we’re Icarus falls in love with Apollo and there’s a version were he knows the wings aren’t gonna hold but keeps flying anyway and a version were he doesn’t hear his fathers warning. In one version of the story, Athena is punishing Medusa, in another she’s giving her a gift. There’s a story where Hades kidnaps Persephone and one where he helps her escape from her mother. All the same myths but told in different ways depending on who tells them and to whom. Slightly different morals to gain from them but always the same basic concept.

And I just think it’s so fitting that the same is happening with the pjo show. Details change! In this version, Annabeth’s dad loves her from the beginning. In this version, they enter Medusa’s house knowing who she is. And this changes the meaning to reflect the time in which the story is told, and the people who tell it. Myths are meant to be retold again and again, thats the beauty of them. It doesn’t mean that one version is better than the other. And I love that Rick Riordan said I’ve told this story before, but what do I want to say this time? And he squeezes so much meaning into it!

noah kahan really said growing up in a small, bitter hometown is about the rage and the hatred that's been sung about many times before but it's also about love and devotion and the 'all three of us were drowning and we didn't know how to save each other but there was an understanding that we were all drowning together' of it all and knowing people so intimately yet not being able to help anyone and he's morally grey at best in a lot of his songs and objectively the bad guy in others and that's just how it is and it's about substance abuse and normalised crime and teen suicide and country roads and failed exams and leaving and being left and love and hate and love and hate and love and

It's about the intimacy of everyone knowing everything about you but not really knowing you. It's about not fitting into one of the established cliques so you just don't have any friends because there are no other options. It's about the sherif not responding to a call about underage drinking because he's too drunk to drive. It's about the out-of-towner whose death was officially hypothermia even though every knew it was too warm for that. It's the about the knowledge that staying will kill you but leaving will take so long to recover from that it might as well kill you too. It's about the graves of people you once loved masquerading as front doors. It's about building a house out of rusty chicken wire as a child and it's about the blood and tetanus shots that followed. It's about gentrification and watching the historic buildings on the mainstreet you grew up with get gutted one by one. It's about the gnawing pit that opens in your stomach as you cross the border into your home state. It's about the relief that comes when you cross that border going the other way. It's about how a dorm room becomes "home" in only three weeks and the resolution to never tell your mom how quickly her home stopped being yours. It's about the guilt that comes with leaving younger siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews behind. It's about learning how to drive in a city and longing for backroads. It's about learning not to be on the defensive constantly. It's about learning you can be loved unconditionally only once you've left the conditional love of your hometown behind. It's about love and hate and love and hate and love and hate and -

Ahhh thank you @tess-is-reading! You’re such an amazing person and an inspiration as a fellow woman in STEM ❤️

📝: What fictional world would you love to visit and explore if given the chance?

The Grishaverse is super cool, so I’d definitely love to live in there and test out my Grisha powers/see the world. And I love the cast of TID and TLH so Victorian/Edwardian Shadowhunters England would be cool to look into (even tho I’d die in like 5 min from a demon attack 💀)

📙: What’s your favorite genre to read, and do you have any recommendations within that genre?

For the past months or so, I’ve been in a big Romance phase and I’m currently reading Dating Dr. Dil. It’s been so surreal as an Indian woman to read spicy scenes where the girl is someone who looks like me, wears glasses, nerdy af, etc. I’m used to not being the main character, the nerdy sidekick, and it’s so refreshing to see that. If you’re looking for some more diversity (plus the smut is pretty good lol), I recommend it!

Thank you for answering @sourlemons262! You’re so inspiring as well, I’m so happy we can chat about both STEM and books 💛

Oh I totally agree about the Grishaverse and TID/TLH London! You could find me trying (and failing) to impress Kaz in Ketterdam or gossiping with Will, Alastair, and Matthew in the corner of the next Institute ball, respectively 😉

I haven’t heard of ‘Dating Dr. Phil,’ but I love the occasional romance and it sounds great! I’ll add it to my TBR for sure ☺️

Thanks again! 🫶

Hey! This is super late but congrats on your follower milestone 🎉 I love your Blackdale fics so much (especially anything post ChoT!) and I was wondering if I could request a fic where Lucie and Jesse go on holiday for the first time? I thought it could be fun to see since Jesse hasn’t gotten to travel before 🥹💛

Thank you very much, I'm humbled! 😊💜 Here I finally am, with the fic. I hope you like this because there were several cities ideas for them, but once I was sold on the two I chose, I thought they were perfect. 💖

Farewell. Farewell! One Kiss and I'll Descend

February, 1905: London

A bright winter morning, Jesse decided that it was time for him to make another one of his dreams come true. Dreaming was the only thing he could do while he was a ghost. He could only long to be under the sun again, the warm rays grazing his skin even during the cold seasons. He could only crave the food he saw on people’s tables during their meals, or the satisfied expression of children when they ate their favorite dessert. He could only long to touch someone or to be held, or simply being seen and acknowledged.

Thank you so much @luciehercndale! I’m so excited to read this later and see what Lucie and Jesse get up to on their holiday 🫶

“I dreamed of this,” he said. “Of being able to touch you. Really touch you. I could always only half feel you—and I imagined what it would be like—I tortured myself with it—”

“It is it like what you thought?” Lucie whispered.

“I think it might break me,” he said, and stretched out above her. “You might break me, Lucie,” and he drove his mouth against hers, hot and demanding. Parting her lips with his, his tongue stroking along hers, making her arch up against him in her desperation to feel his heartbeat close to hers."

for the bookish ask ✨

Avatar

Thank you for the ask @luciehercndale 💛

☺️ who's your comfort character?

I have too many to list! If I had to pick just one I’d say Tessa Gray from TID - I read TID over a decade ago now, and Tessa was really the first character I ever saw myself in! She made me so much more confident in myself as I was growing up and I will always be so grateful to her for teaching me that women can be brave and smart and bookish and stay true to themselves both in and out of relationships. We’re also both Americans that live in London, so that makes me feel even more connected to her story now!

🙄 what's a popular book that you dislike, but you'll get crucified if you say it?

The ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ series by SJM 😬 I think what bothers me about them is that they would be fine is they were marketed for what they are (basically smut), but instead SJM tries to include a “plot” that makes absolutely no sense and is riddled with holes and inaccuracies. I’ve read the whole series twice now and I still couldn’t say what any of the “wars” were about, lol. And those books also have massive issues with misogyny, sexism, and representation.

😌 what's your go-to genre if you're in a reading slump or don't know what to read next?

Until recently I probably would have said YA/New Adult fantasy! Now if I’m in a reading slump I tend to try to find something that is more psychological/experimental fiction to reignite my interest - Bunny by Mona Awad just got me out of a huge reading slump! Fantasy is still my favorite, but you definitely have to be in the right mindset to learn a whole new magic system and world!

Thanks again @luciehercndale!
