Because "looking for spanking" (or kidfic, or polyamory, or RACK BDSM stories, or noncon, or whatever) is a more-or-less known & understandable amount of content. There's some disagreement, but for the most part, the people who are into a particular trope or kink will agree about which stories contain that thing.

For the people who want to avoid the thing? No such consensus process exists. There are people who want to avoid the same fics that other people want to find. There are people who want to avoid fics that don't contain that much of the trope, but contain negotiation of it, or a mention that it happened offscreen, or are shaped by it happening in the past.

And there are people whose idea of "avoid" is "if the fic mentions the possibility that this could exist in the fic-world, I'm gone, and also the author should've warned me." They want warnings if A teased B about spanking, or A considered adopting kid with B, or A and B agreed they weren't into handcuffs but they might try it if the other one was into it.

The people who want to see the thing, want to see the actual thing.

The people who want to avoid the thing, sometimes want to avoid the thing. Sometimes they want to avoid thing-adjacent content. And sometimes they want story where thing does not exist at all and is never mentioned, even obliquely in passing.

Authors, even if they wanted to, cannot predict that, and cannot warn for it. You can't guess which story elements could be taken as intro to/side mention of some particular kink. If A flirts with C (because A is an incorrigible flirt who winks and blows kisses at everyone), that is not "the light version of infidelity" and does not need a warning for infidelity, or mild infidelity, or infidelity-if-you-squint, or anything like that.

Tag for what's actually in your fic, not for what an AI bot might be able to recognize as "this fic contains traces of kink."

a lot of people are misunderstanding this post. minors arent taking away your spaces. the internet is not being made safer for children, it is being sanitised for advertisers.

Disney channel’s website is now “Disneynow.com” which still has games and shows appropriate for kids, but is aimed towards a younger audience as it combines Disney Jr and Disney Channel properties, and the look of the entire site is very juvenile and not very appealing to kids in the tween and young teen demographics.

Nick.com has been similarly streamlined and is focused primarily on streaming its shows, and the only games still left are 10 apps that can’t be played on browser.

Kid-friendly sites like icarly.com, Poptropica, Club Penguin, Neopets, Webkinz etc used to be insanely relevant and popular spaces built for kids and tweens.

Now, kids are being funneled into less moderated, more exploitative, and more public spaces like Roblox (its dangerous and exploitative nature exposed in these videos from People Make Games: (x) (x)), Fortnite (known for its gambling and microtransaction issues), and social media sites like TikTok, YouTube, and Twitter.

My elementary aged cousins spend their time on Roblox, YouTube, and some less than reputable game sites that are full of ads and stolen/reposted/reskinned games. My sister was on Musically/Tiktok and Twitter in middle school. They don’t have the same options for having fun online that I did when I was a kid, especially not when they get too old for nickjr and disneynow.

The internet has been condensed into about 5 popular sites that are full of ads, and it’s not fair to anyone.
