sometimes I rewatch fitz’s psychotic break because iain is amazing and I like to break my own heart but like

Fitz spent months in a federal prison slowly losing his grip on his own sanity, even doing research on himself and confirming he might have suffered from some form of schizophrenia, considering the possibility that he did something to his team and blocked the memory. He spent so long trying to isolate himself from framework!fitz, tried to convince himself he wasn’t him. And then he has to become him, he has to lean into it to get Jemma and the others back. And then he has to reconcile that Fitz with the one he wants to be, has to reconcile how easy it was for him to act like that, how violent and calculating he can be, and tries to split himself so much away from The Doctor in his mind that he actually creates him instead. He splits himself into two warring personalities because he can’t reconcile both of them together. And when they split, The Doctor takes everything that Fitz became as he overcame his TBI, leaving Fitz his early s2 self, shaky and unsteady and stumbling over his words, and seeing ghosts. Everything that made Fitz who he was post-TBI becomes The Doctor.

That’s why Fitz has such a hard time coming up with a solution. Because deep down he knows the solution is Daisy, but he knows she’d never agree to it. So he blocks it out, doesn’t let himself even consider it. But part of him still does, and he can’t reconcile it. And thus, the split. Because that’s exactly what his brain did the first time, with Jemma. Fitz couldn’t come up with the solutions, so he created Jemma in his mind and she came up with them instead. Only then, she was useful and Fitz actually wanted those solutions. This time, the personality his brain created to help with solutions was someone Fitz tried his damndest to block out. And his TBI manifested it into an actual psychotic break. It’s terrible and it’s beautiful and it’s mesmerizing and heartbreaking and bloody hell Iain is fantastic with all of this
