today i found out that when monarch butterflies migrate south for the winter, all the ones that go across the middle of lake superior suddenly stop going south and go west for five miles and then continue south. which really freaked scientists out cos like What is in the Middle of Lake Superior what do Butterflies know that We Dont Is This The End Times etc. anyway turns out about a hundred million years ago there was a mountain there and the butterflies still think they gotta fly around it. classic butterflies
combine this with the fact that caterpillars literally turn into bug soup in their crystallis, meaning there is no central nervous system to carry over any information, but they seem to retain memories from caterpillar life regardless…
and it brings up a lot of questions about what kind of information can even be stored in genes, like… does genetic memory really exist? what does this mean for humankind? could a race of people develop an instinctual memory of the land like this? are there people whose bones tell the stories of ancient mountains? what about my people? is the diaspora something that can be felt among every one of us? are we all the living cumulation of hundreds of thousands of ghosts?
i am simultaneously fascinated and frightened by this. classic butterflies indeed
Do you think it’s possible to be a good person and a Sith? Like, a Sith who doesn’t hate everything to ever exist, who only hates evil things like injustice and slavery and whatnot. I mean, obviously one can be a bad person and a Jedi, so I was wondering if the opposite scenario could occur?
No, I don’t.I think it’s possible for a Sith to stop being a Sith by becoming a betterperson but I don’t think it’s possible for someone to be a sith an remain agood person because being a Sith is not just about using the dark side. The ideologybehind the Sith is incompatible with being a good person.
A Sith isnot someone who hates everything. They are a group of people who believe only whatthey want and believe matters so they feel justified in doing and takingwhatever they want. there are no real moral code supporting their actions. Everythingis acceptable as long as it serves their agenda.
Look, theSith were inspired by Nazism. They are the sw equivalent of Nazis. So you haveto ask yourself if it’s possible for a person can believe in that ideology, acton it, and still be considered a good person™.
The keyhere is to look at as shades of grey, instead of just right/wrong or good/evil.There’s a difference between the desire to do good and the willingness to doevil. That’s what separates the Jedi’s wrongs from the Sith’s evilness.
The type ofperson you are thinking of (uses dark side, but not “evil) is a grey Jedi. Theyuse the dark side of the force but they still fight for justice and peace.
I refuse this. I refuse to believe that an entire race of aliens are all Evil™. I refuse to believe an entire Empire of people, from the lowly soldier to the highest of Sith Lords, are all Evil™. Darth Bane’s order spawned evil people, but that was because there were smaller numbers allowing for better evilness to be chosen to continue the grand plan. But everyone related or apart of the Sith Order, especially the Old Order, cannot all be evil.
Just to be clear, I was talking about “modern” Siths. Yeah, not everyone connected to the Sith is evil – as I said, there are shades of grey – but the moment you support their actions or ideology, the moment you willingly join their group, you no longer get to call yourself a good person. Look at the Empire: it was a Sith empire. People were trapped by it. They had to play by its rules to survive and eventually win. These people are not evil™. But the moment they supported their ideology, turned a blind a to racism, genocide and slavery they don’t get to be considered good people. Maybe they are not as evil as Palpatine, but they are definitely not good people.
In the end, it’s about your own morals and if you believe a person who supports racism, genocide or slavery can still be a considered a good person.
@devillikeme replied:
The thing is that Sith and Jedi are two different belief systems. If you want to call yourself a jedi or a sith you have to live after their strict code and guidelines. If you are, for example, a sith and disagree with their code and leave, then you become a darkside user and are no longer called a sith. So asking if a Sith can resent parts of the sith code and still be called a sith is like asking if a christian can still be a christian when they believe in multiple gods. Doesn’t work that way And before I forget the empire in the OT =/= Old Sith empire two completely different things!
Exactly! It’s a ideological problem. The moment you behave in a way that contradict that believe you stop being a symbol of that ideology.
A Jedi doesn’t behave like a Jedi or follow their doctrine is not a Jedi. A Sith that doesn’t act on sith ideology is not a Sith. And when talking about these group ideologies we have to look at the whole not only the parts. The Sith is a representation of evil. Yes, there are shades of grey but the moment a sith becomes a good person they no longer are Siths.
Also, you don’t have to act on something to a bad person. Morality is also about what you believe. Just because a Sith doesn’t actively support slavery, racism and genocide doesn’t mean they are not bad. Following an ideology or a group that allows these things to exist is also terrible.
Krell was only accepted as a Jedi while he was behaving like a Jedi. Vader was only a Sith when he was behaving like a sith. There’s no such a thing as an evil Jedi. the moment their beliefs and actions no longer fell in line with their groups they were no longer part of them.
The OP asked about a Sith who hates evil, who fights slavery and injustice. None of these things are part of the sith ideology. Slavery and injustice may not be mandatory for them but tackling these issues are definitely what their organization is about. Fighting for widespread justice and peace require a level of selflessness that is incongruent with the sith way of thinking.
@padawanlost Okay, I didn’t anticipate the level of response this would get, but I just want to explain why I asked if it was possible. So, as far as my understanding goes, the Sith code is
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
which I interpreted as, for a survivor of a traumatic experience, peace is a lie. After a traumatic experience, one is afraid of repeating the experience; they want to avoid future pain and suffering. They may also feel anger toward the person/people who hurt them (line 1). Rather than let their pain/anger/fear control them, however, the person can confront these feelings and master them, and in the process become stronger as a person (line 2). Self-mastery provides the person with the strength to stand up for themselves, rather than let others control them (line 3). In turn, the person’s newfound power allows them to overcome those who seek to dominant/control/exploit them (line 4). Finally, by overcoming their trauma, and the resulting fear and anger, the person is freed from the psychological bonds of oppression/abuse/trauma.
My initial interpretation of the Sith and Jedi codes would be the Sith are about achieving freedom through mastery of one’s passion, whereas the Jedi are martyrs who are very Christian, philosophically-speaking—repressing so-called “negative emotions” and in denial about reality. The Jedi seem to believe that by refusing to acknowledge a problem, that problem disappears. However, an unaddressed problem doesn’t disappear, it simply festers like a wound.
Obviously, my interpretation disagrees with canon material, but I was just wondering if such an interpretation was feasible. Like, theoretically, could one could be a darkside user who follows the Sith code the way I described rather than the way canon typically explains it?
Sorry I’m strafing off the topic, but I wanted to add something. Speaking of “Sith baggage”, I think we should consider what happened in the EU and how the Sith cult was formed. Their concepts were created just to provoke an emotional response at first, but expanded universe made the Sith much more fascinating than movies. As far as I know the Dark Jedi exiles discovered a planet with a native species called Sith who haven’t mastered space travels yet, enslaved them and started to rule them as Gods. After a while the new society were born and the first Sith cult was formed, where people followed teachings of the Dark Jedi.
They started a war with the Republic after they discovered it, but lost. However even they were no longer a threat, it wasn’t enough for the winning side. Then the sith genocide happened. The Republic and Jedi started to hunt down all remaining natives. They drow them to near extinction, only a few survived.
With no allies and no hope for a future they weaponised all they knew in the hope to survive. Survivours became more agressive, cruel, and used the teachings of the Dark Jedi to the maximum. Society that was formed in such crysis forced people into the new ideolody. As Scourge said many hundreds of years later “We were what you made us. In my youth, Jedi were how you threatened errant children. Obey your masters or the Jedi will obliterate you”.
Of course I can’t protect their ideology or the Empire at all. I also think the Sith code is damaging and selfish (even though I’m fascinated by it). But while sith carry the baggage of the slavery, war and genocide they also were damaged by it, and it’s the wery same baggage that is carryed by the Jedi even if they always had a good intentions. Of course not in the equivalent measure. Again, I’m not going to pretend Sith were the good guys, I’m just telling that in the position they were put in, with Gods they worshipped, which enslaved them once, I can see how they formed such society. Also in the Old Republic Era at times of crysis all force sensetives even slaves were traned in the ways of the sith. Many died during trials. You will become the sith or you will die. A person could survive by accepting a sith title so you can say it was forced on some. There is always rules and traditions of course, but in some cases individuals choosed practicality and serving to the society over emotions and utter selfishness. Because being an ideology, Sith can reform and they reformed many times, sometimes for better or worse. I can see a “good” Sith personally, but not in the movies timeline.
(If I got something wrong lore-wise you can correct me. I’m pretty new to this fandom)
This is one of the most interesting Star Wars meta I’ve ever read. Can anyone address the matter of how the Sith enable slavery and this is definitely a bad thing, but the Jedi turn a blind eye to slavery and they’re still the good guys?
Daisy Ridley checking up on Adam Driver is making me lose my dam mind
This is so wonderful. My husband has social anxiety and I am the outgoing one. I know exactly what she’s doing right here. Everyone is laughing, having a good time and he is hanging back. When you have social anxiety, you might be hanging back in that particular moment because you’re an observer by nature, or because you’re overwhelmed and trying to hold it together. It looks the same on the outside because you’ve gone years trying to hide it from others. You’re a people pleaser at heart and don’t want others to notice you’re uncomfortable - that would single you out even further. That thumbs up she gives him, I’ve done a similar gesture with my husband tons of times. It’s the “hey I am right here with you gesture.” It’s the “if you need more space to breathe let me know gesture” It’s the “when this is all over we will just unwind and decompress for days gesture.”
Now obviously they are friends and coworkers and what it means between me and my husband and between them is different because of that different relationship. But at its core, I recognize this. He is out of his element, being more private by nature, she is the golden girl, the center of attention, and she is looking back as if to say, “You’re doing great, we are almost through this.”
So much love for them.
Agree so much with @darkknightdarkside I have bad anxiety, but some days are better than others. Those who recognize this or know me will give me “that look” or some kind of gesture that asks if I’m alright.
I love their friendship ❤️
This makes my heart happy💓

it just occurred to me that darth vader, master engineer, probably looked at the death star plans at some point and noticed the flaw, but didn’t bother to tell anyone about it because he despised everyone who was involved in the project
Alternatively: Vader DID say something, but was ignored by the moffs. “You’re stuck in the mindset of a pilot! Nobody would be crazy enough to try it, and star fighters capible of preforming it are being phased out already. A swarm of TIE Fighters launched from our new Star Destroyers will me more than enough to defeat any such attack, not to mention the battlestation’s own point defense systems.”
Yeah, that “analysis of the rebel strategy?” That was some poor tech uncovering a memo from Vader’s office that outlined the (at the time, hypothetical) rebel battle plan nearly perfectly.
“I told you so,” Vader mutters as the Death Star explodes, barely even reacting to the shock wave sending his fighter spinning into the vast emptiness of space
TOOK THEM LONG ENOUGH!!!

So I found this app called Scan Halal where you scan the bar code of your food and it tells you if its halal or not. It’s a free app too. Pass this on so others can see and worry a little less about their food/snack choices
Yessss, it is very handy especially in non-muslim countries

For various real life reasons, I am really depressed right now.
What is keeping me from just crawling back into bed and hiding from the world are fics, humans and aliens posts and @determamfidd and her commentary on all things Australia.
*HUGS STITCH HARD* I am so sorry things are so rough rn, Stitch. You are such a mithril-plated lil fuzzy alien sweetheart.
Here’s a solid gold bit of Australiana trivia - and it is both true and hysterical.
The entrepeneur, activist and philanthropist Dick Smith is a household name here in Oz. He sells Australia-made products, such as peanut butter and cereal and spreads, and used to own the largest electronics chain in the country. He has a real bee in his bonnet about Australia-made stuff - to the point that, when Kraft bought out Vegemite, he made his own version and called it Ozemite.
he looks like this:
This is the face of an epic pranker. Remember that.
He pulled off a serious corker of an April Fool’s joke in 1978. He’d been telling the media for months that he could provide fresh water to drought-prone areas - all without the need for a desalination plant.
And so, one April day, an iceberg floated into Sydney Harbour. He said he’d towed it from Antarctica. They christened it the ‘Dickenberg One’.
People began demanding to carve off bits of it, which they called ‘dicksicles.’ Dick claimed that they would improve the flavour of any drink, bc of the astounding purity.
(STICK A DICKSICLE IN YA DRINK, MAKE IT TASTE GOOD)
As the Dickenberg began to melt, it was revealed to be a sheet of white plastic over a mountain of foam and shaving cream. But not before every radio station had gone berserk with excitement over the iceberg in Sydney Harbour.
It rates as #12 of the most epic April Fool’s pranks of all time, apparently. Hope this made you smile, beautifullest Stitch.
Heh. “Dicksicles.”
