Maybe if we all worked with our hands and planted ourselves into things like making rough puff pastry or fermenting vegetables we wouldn't get so caught up in feeling like we need to have complete control over our lives or anyone else's

So apparently the way to get my brain to write is to give it a quadruple sized shot of adrenaline, then make it spend a good 30 minutes dealing with emergency response and someone freaking out, thus making sure the adrenaline sticks around for the rest of the damn day. I had the idea for a story weeks ago, but didn't start until today when I was trying to key down from having my neighbor's dog attacked by another dog directly in front of my house and getting to rush him to the ER vet.

(Good news: he's fine. He only suffered a couple of minor injuries, really. I think the shock of the attack made him faint, though, because when I first got there, he looked straight up dead and my neighbor was freaking out that he'd been killed.)

(...personally still not 100% keyed down, but doing a lot better...seven hours later...)

I'm Improving!

There are several times since the announcement of the third Downton movie that I've almost come on here and shared an observation that I feel very deeply, but each time I've been able to stop myself and go "What are you thinking, Self? That's not a popular view, so the only people who will pay any attention at all are the people eager for a reason to disagree with you and tell you how wrong you are and talk about how canon needs to go their way.............again" and I've not done it! In fact, I think after today's mental war I think I've managed to squash the urge completely!

...

In other news I'm starting to get the feeling I might need a Tumblr break sometime in the upcoming months. Maybe not, but it seems likely. If I do, I promise, Ao3 updates will continue as scheduled.

“When you feel perpetually unmotivated, you start questioning your existence in an unhealthy way; everything becomes a pseudo intellectual question you have no interest in responding whatsoever. This whole process becomes your very skin and it does not merely affect you; it actually defines you. So, you see yourself as a shadowy figure unworthy of developing interest, unworthy of wondering about the world - profoundly unworthy in every sense and deeply absent in your very presence.”

Some of my writer’s block cures:

  • Handwrite. (If you already are, write in a different coloured pen.)
  • Write outside or at a different location.
  • Read.
  • Look up some writing prompts.
  • Take a break. Do something different. Comeback to it later.
  • Write something else. (A different WIP, a poem, a quick short story, etc.)
  • Find inspiring writing music playlists on YouTube. (Themed music, POV playlists, ambient music, etc.)
  • Do some character or story prompts/questions to get a better idea of who or what you’re writing.
  • Word sprints. Set a timer and write as much as you can. Not a lot of time to overthink things.
  • Set your own goals and deadlines.
  • Write another scene from your WIP. (You don’t have to write in order.) Write a scene you want to write, or the ending. (You can change it or scrap it if it doesn’t fit into your story later.)
  • Write a scene for your WIP that you will never post/add to your story. A prologue, a different P.O.V., how your characters would react in a situation that’s not in your story, a flashback, etc.
  • Write down a bunch of ideas. Things that could happen, thing that will never happen, good things, bad things.
  • Change the weather (in the story of course.)

Feel free to add your own.

I was actually just up in Ohio for the solar eclipse, and did you know, I'd never seen Spring before?

I thought I had, because down here in Florida we do get some flowers and nice green leaves as the weather shifts from cool to hot, but the trees are never bare and the flowers just blend in with the rest of the trees and in comparison this Actual Spring was some sort of magical wonderland, I swear to god, I've never seen anything like it

Apple blossoms???? are so pretty???????? the subtle changes of the colors, and they take up the whole tree and they're so damn beautiful????????????????? I had never seen them before, we don't have any apple trees down here at all, but now they might be my favorite flower

I'm familiar with cherry blossoms- we do have some cherry trees- but not like this. This tree was entirely pink and stood out so much! No leaves or anything on the trees, just flowers everywhere!!! I see why people like spring and cherry blossoms so much, I think.

And idek what these are but LOOK at that!!!!!!! Life and color!!!! Spring!!!!

So yeah. I went to Ohio and I thought it was beautiful and i wanted to share that with you. Your state is wonderful!!!

New challenge for the week: find something in your everyday environment that would be amazing and magical if you had never seen it before.

So far I've got that blue patch that mallard ducks have on their wings.

Imagine how magical it would be to see, if they lived in, say, remote lakes on top of mountains, instead of in whatever pond, stream, creek, or large puddle the neighborhood park has to offer.

Dedicated birders would come from out of state, get up at dawn, and hike three hours uphill through the woods, in the hopes of seeing a breeding pair, with the iridescent green head of the male, and that secret flash of blue.

One year I was complaining in my NANOWRIMO camp cabin about how tired I was of listening to people complain about the weather. I mean, you're in Seattle and it's raining. Who saw that coming? I swear, it could be dry for a month and the second it rained people would be all "Oh no! When is the rain finally going to go away? We need just a few rays of sunlight!" Anyway, one of the other campers piped up saying that they were from Maine and they'd come out here and people were all griping about how grey it was and they were just..."Grey? I'm from Maine! That's grey! You guys have neon green moss!"

And it was just...yes. Yes we do. I had not actively thought about it for a bit, but you are 100% right. And how can you complain that it's 'soooo grey' when we have friggin' neon green moss!

Another, somewhat less amusing one, was when an online friend of mine moved out here from Chicago and started having nasty vertigo issues because our ground. Is not flat. Seattle is actually as hilly as 'Frisco, only it occasionally snows here. That wasn't a fun time...

Our water falls aren't international award winners, but I bet if you've never seen one before they'd make an impression...even the little ones that form on the side of the roads when you go through the mountain passes when is or has been raining...

Oh, and orcas. If you are not from killer whale territory seeing a pod would be hella impressive.

OH! And then there's this:

Not the most classic shot, but it does give you a sense for how high it is? And there's a second section on the other side of that island. The view is just....GUH!

OH! And did you know we have a rain forest out here? I mean, not the tropical sort you think of, but a temperate rain forest! That's a thing! My cousin once came to visit from Virginia and told her class she was going to visit the rain forest in Washington, only to have the teacher tell her there wasn't one. Good news - not only is there one, but they have a metric ton of pamphlets that you can take home from you when you visit so if someone says 'there's no rain forest in Washington' you can hit them in the face with, like, 50 pamphlets.

This is Money Snake. She only appears every 312 years.

If you reblog her picture within the next twenty-five seconds you will have good luck and fortune for the rest of your life.

I reblogged her late last year and my 2024 has been very satisfying work-wise and (secure enough to not stress out) money-wise so far. Money Snake is wise and good.

Money Snake is a snake. She goes on my dash. Period.

people telling you they reread your fic is the biggest compliment you could ever receive. there are thousands of stories out there begging to be found, to be explored, but your story meant so much to someone that they came back to it eagerly, they went over every word again. to love is to return and loving a fic is rereading it. thank you to all readers and rereaders <3333

The Good News: I've got through the rewrite of a bunch of guys sitting around waiting for a baby to be born! And I don't hate it this time!

The Bad News: Now I have to write a guy bonding with a squashed tomato newborn. ...have I mentioned I'm not a baby person? I'm not a baby person. As in super duper not a baby person. As in if people are standing around cooing at a baby, I am finding something else to do now...preferably playing with their pet.

Some potentially-helpful observations:

  • A brand-new baby is not entirely un-pet-like. Especially if you sit in a rocking chair with it on your shoulder and just kind of zone out.
  • At the same time there's this interesting awareness that this is in fact a human person, even though all of the normal rules of human people are out the window. You don't have to talk, they aren't going to remember anything about this interaction, you can fit their entire behind in the palm of one hand...however, they are a person. It's kind of neat!
  • Also if this is the project I think it is, the character may find it a bit of a relief to have one member of the family with whom his relationship is not excruciatingly awkward. With this new person, their experience of each other will not be divided into a "before" and an "after."

While not all of this is helpful for this exact project, at least not in this exact instance (maybe later!), it is very nice to have if for no other reason than I have now finished the scene and, upon reading it, am going "YES! Got it right!"

...

*cough*

In short - yeah, it's that project. Thank you for the confirmation. ^^;
