Finally optimized my gif for Tumblr!

As a huge fan, I drew what I wanted to see myself: spectacle, dynamics and the friendship between these buddies.

I wanted animation to have a warm feeling of imperfection, so every detail on each character in every frame was colored by the “brush” instrument.

Here’s the bigger version! https://youtu.be/IrIcmoHcHwM

all these retro style games that are like "NO tutorials NO handholding" apparently forgot about the little books that used to come with your game that detailed all the mechanics, controls, special moves, lore, maps, collectables, means of unlocking additional content, character bios, etc

i remember there were a few games that would even include what was essentially a walkthrough/strategy guide for the first level or two, i dont get what these retro devs are on lmao

hadnt actually considered that. much to think about

When I first played Myst it came with a small notebook for recording puzzles and things, as well as a sealed envelope with three hints inside that read "open only if in dire need".

The fact that the hints were made accessible legitimately, but only if I was "in dire need" actually served as motivation for me to work out the puzzles on my own, persevering though insanely hard ones that, had it been any other game, I would have given up on and looked up answers for.

And when I eventually did need to open the envelope of hints, it didn't feel cheap or like cheating at all. Instead it just felt like part of the game. Same with the notebook, having to sketch the map layouts and physically write down important lore, was infinitely more fun and immersing than having to take screenshots would have been.

Anyway yeah, I wish games would do that again. I have the fondest memories of playing Myst because of it (despite it being difficult as hell)

RB if you think CD drives in computers are not obsolete, but in fact still necessary, despite being artificially phased out

I think the funniest dynamic for arranged-marriage royalty would be a queen who came here 100% prepared to murder her future husband and rule as a widow queen in her own right, only to discover that the king is autistic as hell and responds to her wish to rule with "oh thank god please do, I don't want to be bothered by these people. I can just tell them to go bother you instead, if you really want that. I've got beetles I wanted to study."

"I'm really not good at it," the king admits with horrible, aching grief. The country is in disarray. Peasants go hungry. Nobles trade power amongst themselves with impunity.

So the queen takes over and ruthlessly sets things to rights. Fires several generals, hangs nobles, redirects wealth to the peasantry. It isn't long before the first assassination attempt, which she expected.

She did not expect her docile, beetle-obsessed husband to go absolutely feral and fling himself at the assassins wielding a pair of sharp knives.

Also, the beetles are intended to attack and kill a certain type of invasive worm that has been killing off the gourd and potato crops for decades. He’s been trying since he was a child to crossbreed several native species to be hardier and better diggers. When he finally gets it right it’s all over for you bitches (“you bitches” being mass starvation of subsistence farmers).

here are my biggest gaming hot takes:

- no game actually needs to run faster than 30 FPS

- no texture needs to be bigger than 2k, and most don’t need to be bigger than 1k (save for megatextures). A good chunk should actually be smaller than 1k

- lower poly counts > high poly counts

Once you pass a certain threshold, it doesn’t even affect the style of the game that much, and you’re just using exponentially more power to get exponentially smaller results

Like, for example, the original Skyrim was 4 GB. The remaster is 22 GB. That’s five-and-a-half times more space for the exact same content! The graphical improvements are honestly negligible, especially when you consider the massive leap in storage and RAM used.

These sorts of things just hit diminishing returns so quickly— My eyes can’t tell the difference between 1k and 4k textures.

We have so many fun ways to get the maximum mileage out of every pixel and every polygon. It’s sad to see those techniques slowly trickle away from big-budget games!

Even as storage space becomes less and less of a concern, there’s something satisfying about keeping everything as small and tidy as possible

Basically, there’s zero excuse for Baldur’s Gate 3 to be 150 GB when Skyrim is 6 GB

Fifteen years ago, the average file size of a big game was 11 GB.

Now, it’s almost 90 GB, with big blockbusters easily hitting 150 GB.

And this isn’t the difference between, say, 1990 and 2005. The games of 2010 are practically identical to the games of 2024 when it comes to content and scope. It’s the same stuff, just bloated to hell and back.

Plot twist: the two boys you're choosing between are polyamorous, but they also hate eachother's guts so you still have to pick one

They hate each other so much because they were both dating the same girl before you and it Did Not Work

Gonna take this time to write a story based on a trope with no direction whatsoever. Surely this is a good idea.

New writing game, we just keep dming each other tropes and the other must incorporate it into the story

Spin a wheel and have to write a one shot with three random tropes

No but it really can be this simple sometimes.

The “enrichment in the enclosure” meme has a lot of truth to it. We need to shake things up a bit to keep happy. It doesn’t have to be big, but if you ever feel stagnant or a little bluh try going on a walk on a route you haven’t been in or something. It really does help.
