He comes to me as though the Fade were just another wooded path to walk without a care in search of wisdom. We share the ancient mysteries, the feelings lost, forgotten dreams, unseen for ages, now beheld in wonder

Varric is “gives you a sip of his beer when you’re 14, includes too many embarrassing anecdotes in the ‘Birds and the Bees’ talk, helps you get into R-Rated movies” Dad.

Solas is, “Unwanted impromptu hikes and camping trips, lets you paint your own room but won’t help paint over it when you decide you hate it two weeks later, ’Let’s talk this out in the yurt’” Dad.

Dorian is “up at 3 AM passive aggressively reading in the living room with a glass of wine when you arrive four hours past your curfew, watches cheesy terrible tv shows with you, gets WAY INTO your science fair project” Dad.

Blackwall is “really bad at gift giving but you know he’s trying very hard, carved your baby cradle by hand himself, tried to teach you to fish but stopped when ‘cleaning’ the fish made you cry and throw up” Dad.

Iron Bull is “Yells REALLY LOUDLY at the TV during both football and cooking shows, scares the shit out of your date while being perfectly friendly, won’t let you out the door in the morning without breakfast ‘At least take this protein bar!’” Dad.

(special extra thanks to @curiousthimble and @greenundeadhobo for beta reading and helping us improve!)

For the elder Hawke twins, it was not the first time they had to leave their home behind and start somewhere fresh, always hiding, always on the run. Adriene and Cassia Hawke thought that the worst was behind them after they escaped the Blight… but a city like Kirkwall was just as likely to bring them closer together than it was likely to tear them apart.

“You! You knew the Champion personally.”

She had a special quality, a talent, to make the simplest statement sound like an accusation.

“Knew? I still do…” Varric looked rather unimpressed at the angry woman in front of him. “Has anyone ever told you that you come across as slightly hostile?”

She almost threw the book she was holding at him. Her arm twitched. She was clearly a woman who preferred fighting over talking. “I will give you hostile, dwarf, if you do not tell me what I want to know!”

Varric clicked his tongue. “Now, now, Seeker… ah, Cassandra, was it? No need to threaten an honest member of the merchant guild over a piece of literature.”

He could see she was still seething, but she seemed to be at least willing to give a less angry approach a try. “I simply need to know more about the Champion. It’s important that I find her.”

“Now, if you have actually read the book you should know that your people are largely at fault for what happened.” He narrowed his eyes at her. “Don’t you think the Chantry has done enough?”

Cassandra let out a frustrated growl. “The circumstances are… changing. And we need the Champion’s help, desperately.” She was pacing in front of him, clearly under a lot of stress. “I already have asked around nearly everywhere to try and get some information about the Champion. The results were… less than helpful,” she admitted.

Varric had his trademark grin on his face. “Oh really? Why don’t you tell me what you have heard and then I’ll see if I can fill in some of the gaps?”

She shook her head in annoyance. “There are no gaps to fill, everyone has plenty to say. It just… doesn’t make any sense,” she huffed. The dwarf gave her a curious look and she sighed. “Some people claim she was almost like an assassin, others say she was a mage.”

Varric’s eyebrows shot up at this. “Really now? That does sound confusing,” he agreed, his smirk growing bigger.

“Then people told me I should probably talk to her partner, but no one seems to agree on who that actually is?” Cassandra rolled her eyes as she remembered the many confusing accounts she had heard. “She had a mage in the undercity who may or may not have been with her, and apparently a pirate general? And people who claim she was a mage say there was a forbidden romance with someone very unsuited, which sounds like something straight out of some of your other books.” She couldn’t see Varric smile as she went on. “Oh, and my personal favorite: Apparently she was in love with an elf that glowed in the moonlight… I mean, really?”

Varric had a hard time keeping a somewhat straight face by now. “Seeker, perhaps I should explain something…” But Cassandra seemed to have no mind to listen to him, finally getting out all the things that frustrated her.

“Apparently she was part of the mage rebellion, helping the Chantry explosion along while somehow working for the Knight-Commander,” she went on. “Penniless while living in a mansion in Hightown and apparently owning a mine that produced dragons, and a brothel. It is ridiculous!”

“That doesn’t really sound like a person you go to for help, right?” Varric prodded carefully.

“No it doesn’t,” Cassandra admitted. “But the Chantry is falling apart and the Divine needs help. And Hawke was our best bet so far.” She sounded almost defeated and Varric was already cursing himself for what he was about to do.

Friendly reminder that:

  • Qunari are empowering Saarebas with lyrium so that they can become stronger, open temporary Rifts, slow time down, and use mysterious spells, all through unknown means.
  • Tevinter is terribly weakened, corrupted, and will not last in the war against the Qunari.
  • Fen’Harel, now incredibly powerful, is planning to eliminate the corrupted parts of the Qun (good thing), but also to tear down the Veil (not that good, depending on the consequences). He will probably help the Tevinter slaves in rebelling against their masters too.
  • Titans are awakening. They are enormous beings living deep underground, whose blood has been consumed for millennia by mages and Templars alike, shaping the world as it is today. They also seem able to influence events above ground and they are very angry with the world or at least with the elves. They will probably re-establish their contact/link with the dwarves.
  • Something is happening in Weisshaupt, the Wardens have gone silent, and a new Blight is most likely coming.
  • The Evanuris are still locked away, but it’s obvious they will get free soon. They are a bunch of homicidal assholes who will not think twice about conquering Thedas again. They might be also tainted by the Blight, if the theories “Evanuris locked away with the Blight in the Black City” are true.
  • If Kieran was born, Flemeth/Mythal took the Old God’s soul from him, planning to do something with it. We still don’t know what it is, but it’s unlikely she will stay “dead”. She still has to have her revenge, her “reckoning which will shake the very heavens”.
  • Either Morrigan or the Inquisitor drank from the Well of Sorrows and the consequences of that act are still unclear, but whatever they are, they are going to suck or at least be mildly disturbing.
  • Mysterious Dalish elves live in the Tirashan. They are violent, cruel, and worship the Forgotten Ones.
  • Strange people from the Volca Sea are returning after a long absence, claiming a terrible calamity struck their lands.
  • We still don’t know what lies beyond the Amaranthine Ocean, but whatever it is, it makes people go insane and suicidal.

Basically Thedas right now:
