- city underground tunnels at late night where you could only hear the faintest of car sounds
- incredibly large underwater library where you could see the surrounding waters outside but can’t hear any sound of it because it’s blocked by glass
- coffee shop attic at faraway seaside town that might’ve once been prosper but not anymore
- pond beside hotel parking lot at 3 in the morning
- inside of an ersatz elevator
- the ruins of burnt down secret organization headquarters barely anyone visited anymore
- alone between bookshelves fulled of piles and piles of secret documents
- early morning at general store in the desert
- reptile room without reptiles

[Friend glancing at a file I left open on my laptop] Aww, they keep a list of all the compliments people give them, that's cute. [Notices a second file titled Compliments From People I Actually Respect] Hm
“None of it is true.” Jacques has become so used to saying these words to everyone who will listen, and even some who he knows will not, that they have almost lost their meaning. “My brother did not set those fires.”
It was only when he arrived to meet Jerome this morning that Jacques realised the state he was in. He has had so little sleep and eaten so little, since Lemony had to leave, that he feels a thousand years old; just creaking along, barely alive. By comparison, Jerome looks the very picture of health, except that his big dark eyes are full of hurt to see Jacques in pain. He barely needs to think about what Jacques has told him; he simply nods. “I believe you.”
san francisco? like in adverbs?

one thing that's been on my mind is that, what does vfd's enemies, including but not quite limited to olaf's troupe, call themselves? like, on one side there's vfd. the volunteers, and on the other side? firestarters is more of a fandom term, isn't it? do they even have like, some kind of, collective name or anything?
i know in the marketing material when the books were released it was volunteers and villains. i cannot remember if that is actually in the text or not
textwise the only thing i remember off the top of my head is the baudelaires being asked "friend or foe" in tgg.
that said, i think the volunteers might call them / or refer to individual persons as villains (or foe) (lemony definitely has described esme as villainous though, i remember that), but i don't think that's what the firestarters, as a group, call themselves. actually, i wonder if they ever refer to themselves as a group at all
yeah I would guess they don't refer to themselves as a group. it seems like part of their contempt for vfd is contempt for the romantic idea of an organization with a common goal. like I think they generally recognize each other as part of various circles -- former vfd members, people who take orders from the man with a beard and the woman with hair, and on a smaller scale there are probably other groups like olaf's acting troupe -- but they aren't operating as an organization, beyond what the man and the woman organize.
yeah ernest in particular i imagine being like. oh i've ~gone over to the enemy~? ~joined the villainous side of vfd~? get over yourself.

yeah this is a good point! "part of their contempt for vfd is the romantic idea of an organization with a common goal" that is such a good way of putting it. love this line of thought.
