sometimes i reminisce on the old days and can't believe it's been 13 years since i first joined tumblr. it's crazy to think about just how much time i spent on this site reblogging art and making gifs and answering asks and talking to people.... tumblr circa 2015 (plus/minus a few years) was legitimately one of the most fun and cherished times in my life. there are definitely times i wish i could just go back to those days.... but then i think about where i am now and it's in those moments that it really dawns on me that time has, indeed, passed. i think about how much i've experienced and how much life i've lived in that time. and despite my love for all things gaming and animanga (which has not dwindled in the slightest since those peak tumblr days), i am not at all the same person i used to be. this word vomit really has no point other than to say that even though i don't use it much anymore, i really love this site and i am grateful for all the wonderful experiences and memories. and i'm all the more grateful to anyone who i interacted with positively in my time here. i love you all and hope you are all taking care of yourselves

well i finished my full reread of naruto and man oh man did i forget just how fun naruto is.... what an amazing ride. maybe it's just nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses but idc bc you can't change my mind!!! anyway here are my main takeaways:

  • it's actually unbelievable how much hate sakura got during naruto's run and still gets to this day. i'll admit, back when i was a stupid idiot moron, i also used to participate in the "sakura is useless" propaganda. and i'll even admit that the "sakura is useless" meme has some credence simply due to the fact that kishimoto is not a very strong character writer and is all the worse when it comes to female characters. that being said, it's pretty clear to me that the "fans" of the series who make hating sakura their entire personality either have abysmal reading comprehension skills, are being willfully ignorant, or are simply misogynistic (or all of the above). i understand that naruto is, at the end of the day, a battle shounen, but there are clearly levels and nuance to this. by the end of the series, sakura is flat out stronger than kakashi and most of if not all of the existing kage but still looks like fodder simply due to the fact that her two teammates are the ultimate deus ex machina incarnation of literal gods. she absolutely gets shafted in the fights department throughout the series and i really have no argument against that. however, i also think healing/support type characters in battle shounen series are heavily and consistently downplayed and underrated. and yeah, i get it, sakura doesn't have giant omega laser of death no jutsu that can cut the moon in half in her arsenal and the value of her mass healing just isn't very flashy... but objectively speaking, i think it goes without saying that medic/support types are arguably the most irreplaceable units to a team (in fiction, video games, tabletop rpgs, etc.). with that all out of the way, i do make slight exception for anime-only fans who openly hate sakura. i did my due diligence on the sakura hatred topic after finishing my reread and i was legitimately shocked to find out that the anime straight up changes canon scenes and dialogue involving sakura, and to no one's surprise, these changes are always negative. they only serve to emphasize sakura's most unlikable traits (including ones that are not even canon) and it makes sense that if you only ever watched the anime, you might feel negatively towards her as a character. what's interesting is that i've heard the exact same thing happened to orihime's character in the bleach anime (which was also done by studio pierrot).... by no means is sakura what i'd consider a well-written character, but after this reread, i would consider her a character i like very much. i definitely lament how much potential was left on the table with her characterization, but i am a fan nonetheless.
  • i am a well-known sasuke apologist and half the time it's just memes but after this fresh reread, my love for sasuke has been reaffirmed. while the sakura hate is mostly centered around her inaction and "uselessness," the sasuke hate is more focused on his "edginess" and the less forgivable offenses he commits. without getting into it too deeply, i think the core issue is that kishimoto just isn't good at writing (which i touched on in my last bullet point). if you really take a more nuanced approach to sasuke's character, his circumstances, and what he went through, the way(s) he reacted and changed aren't even remotely unrealistic. as stated, the issue really lies in kishimoto's inability to convey this messaging in a natural and convincing way. sasuke is an edgy dude and i get why he's divisive, but i personally found it very gratifying and cathartic to watch him grow as a character and mature from the start of the series through his final appearance(s) as an adult.
  • this wouldn't be a proper tumblr user itachi manga review if i didn't rag on bnha at least once!! before i get into my rant, i just want to acknowledge that i am probably very biased since naruto is one of the most important animanga in my life and a series i had been reading weekly since i was 12 all the way through its final chapter. with that out of the way, MAN deku is truly the wish dot com "we have naruto at home" rip off of naruto. and don't even get me started on bakugou.... like what is his excuse for being an absolute dbag for 99% of the series??? he's uglier and stupider and more obnoxious and stinkier and just worse than sasuke in every conceivable way despite having zero excuse for his behavior. like, he grew up in a loving two-parent household and was blessed with prodigious talent from birth but we are somehow expected to sympathize with him?? and if we want to look more broadly, bnha is just a cheap knock off of naruto as a whole. bnha copies literally every trope and plot point from naruto but does it so so so so much worse. and i'm not implying that naruto invented these common shounen tropes, but it would also be highly disingenuous to pretend like naruto isn't one of the most important and influential shounen manga ever created. i could probably write multiple pages on how bnha rips off naruto, but i'll refrain simply bc a lot of them pertain to bnha's current (final) arc and i don't want to spoil anything for anyone who is still invested in the series or only watches the anime. what i will say though is that horikoshi even went out of his way to copy the god awful writing of female characters in naruto but he made sure to crank it to 11 LOL
  • i didn't cry once reading naruto during it's live run, nor did i cry during any of my subsequent rereads. however, i teared up multiple times during this most recent reread and idk why. maybe this is proof that i am just a soft and sentimental old man now....

anyway there is a lot more i could write but i'll leave it at that! i very much love this series despite all of its flaws and plot holes and head-scratching narrative decisions. it's one of the most if not THE most influential animanga series in my life and i think what it did for shounen animanga and animanga as a whole is immeasurable. i normally would've put all of it under a read more but at this point i'm like who cares lol i literally hop on tumblr like four times a year and idek how many of my followers are active so oh well XD if you read this entire thing........ sugoi..... you are sugoi dattebayo
