Atticus stopped, and gave his head a little shake. "Wait, sorry, that was a really stupid question," he said. "Of course you're awake, what was I thinking?" Oh god, did the bite make him stupider? No, probably just more all-over-the-place than normal. "I, um... I'm not sleeping either," he said. His stomach flipped a bit at the thought of that. He should have appreciated being unconscious and buried in the sand more. "Hey, um, totally innocuous question, but I failed that supernatural course like twice, and I have some, uh, vampire questions? And you're smart in a non-dorky way, I think--" He clapped his hands together, steepling them and point at Avery before he began. "Uh, when bound, how human are you still? What's the same? Does everything really taste worse, like... say you really like sour candy, does it have the same feel to it?"
Avery chuckled a little, shaking his head as he set his book aside. “It's OK, there's no such thing as a stupid question. Everything's kind of a mess right now and everybody's kind of rattled right now.” Avery scooted over to make a space for Atticus to sit down so they could talk without waking the others. “Sure, go ahead,” Avery replied with a small laugh. It felt strange being the one to answer vampire questions when he'd been the one asking questions not so long ago. He couldn't help but laugh again at the questions. “Well, I got turned by accident way back when and they rebound me after that weekend so I didn't get to spend much time unbound. I did have a couple rentals where my Maker taught me about being a vampire.” He leaned back on his arms as he thought about the questions the other fledgling had. “Honestly, being bound helps a lot, especially in the early days. Being unbound is rough when you're first getting a handle on your senses. I wouldn't say that everything tastes worse, just more bland. Except for blood. Blood tastes amazing. You really need the extremes of flavors to make them pop. Take your sour candy example. I love sour candy but the gummy part really doesn't have any flavor anymore. So instead I just suck on them to get all the sour part off, and I don't suffer from that tingle you get when you eat too many.”
