🔹 Saying that it's okay to write or read about dark and taboo topics but only when they're portrayed in a certain way is still censorship.

🔹 Wanting to ban or forbid media that you believe portrays a negative topic in a positive light, by glorifying, romanticizing, or fetishizing it is still censorship.

🔹 There is no objective metric to decide if a story is portraying a negative topic the 'right' way.

🔹 Just because a piece of fiction doesn't explicitly condemn or portray an evil action in a bad light in the text doesn't mean the author thinks its good or is trying to persuade the audience that it is good.

🔹 Survivors of trauma will not always write fiction about their trauma in a way that seems 'right' or 'normal' to you.

🔹 Banning fiction because it portrays dark, taboo topics in a way you consider gross or disgusting is still censorship.

We still see this language in the modern world where it's full-scale bullshit. In a period or pseudo-period context it's doing some of that but typically reflects the (deliberately disenfranchising) legal norm that he owns the farm or the inn or whatever it is, and she doesn't and can't because property rights are gendered; maybe as a widow she could own it or maybe she couldn't, but she's a wife, and that's her actual legal status.

if you avoid that language without altering that underlying structure of the scenario, you aren't necessarily doing anything but sanitizing and erasing it. applied carelessly, labeling this kind of language as 'bad' and solving it by 'getting rid of it' is worse than useless; you just get worse art and vaguer history.

so ideally we check in with ourselves like, in this specific sentence, is it useful or desirable to perpetuate and/or invoke that paradigm by using this language, or not?

my grandma listed her vocation as "pastor's wife" because that was/is a goddamn full time job. and also distinct from the job of pastor. shit's complicated.

All three of these takes are subtly different and true.

I assume any good lawyer would instruct their client not to talk/ answer anything you absolutely have to. And this chuckle fuck is talking when the opposing lawyer hasn’t even asked him a question

Ooooo musk rly didn’t want this depo to become public lol

Yes, such a claim makes him look like a small-minded piece of shit. To us. But we still shouldn't help Musk create revisionist history.

Musk bought Twitter because he fucked around and found out. He wanted to fuck with Twitter's stock price by feigning interest in buying it. Since that's illegal, he was then cornered into actually buying it for an insanely inflated price.

He's a transphobe. He's a bad father. But he's also a fucking idiot.

This. Please remember that he committed blatant market manipulation by not disclosing that he owned shares of Twitter when he was fucking with the stock market. The SEC was watching him very closely already, and so when the cost became more than what the entire company was worth, he had no choice. Remember when he had his gaggle of lawyers try to get him out of it by saying Twitter didn't disclose all of the information? That wasn't Twitter, it was him trying desperately to get out of a purchase he didn't want in the first place.

Sometimes I see straight women posting and I'm like hmmm okay I can see why some straight men are driven insane without necessarily being like Andrew Tate psychos

Oh there's so many of these

The feminine trait of *checks notes* wanting to stay hydrated

... And you hid it in the tags ?

We have GOT to keep making fun of cis women who act like this. It’s the only way we can move forward

"It hurt to lose to Ronald Reagan. But after the election, I tried to make the transition as smooth as possible. Later, from my experience in trying to brief him on matters of supreme importance, I was very disturbed at his lack of interest. The issues were the 15 or 20 most important subjects that I as President could possibly pass on to him. His only reaction of substance was to express admiration for the political circumstances in South Korea that let President Park close all the colleges and draft all the demonstrators. That was the only issue on which he came alive."

-- Former President Jimmy Carter, on losing the 1980 election and the transition leading to the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, interview with TIME Magazine, October 11, 1982.

This comes up over and over again: an outgoing Democrat tries to share deeply important information with their Republican successor, who can't be bothered and couldn't care less. They just want to know how they can abuse their new power to hurt people.

It's such a clear pattern, going back almost 45 years, and it's had disastrous consequences for America and the world.

And yet, here we are, again.

such a huge relief that hillary’s so ahead in the polls and trump has such a small chance of winning, right? WRONG. DO NOT GET APATHETIC OR COMFORTABLE. DO NOT DECIDE YOU DON’T NEED TO VOTE BECAUSE YOU’RE SURE HILLARY WILL WIN. the only way trump can win now is if so many people expected to vote for hillary don’t show up to the polls. because you BETTER believe ALL of his supporters will be at the polls.

brexit passed in the UK because young people grew apathetic because they were sure it wasn’t going to pass. and it did, because old racists and xenophobes showed up in DROVES to vote.

tl;dr: VOTE, PEOPLE. VOTE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. IT MIGHT.

*AGGRESSIVELY STARES AT USAMERICANS IN 2024*

People, people, don’t pull the same shit that was done in 2016.

In 2016, people didn’t like Clinton so they either didn’t vote, protest voted 3rd party, or straight-up voted for Trump.

Look what that got us. 4 years of a literal dumpster fire.

in 2020 we united behind a candidate that might not have been our favorite but he wasn’t Trump, and we booted Trump out.

For some goddamn reason we are having a replay of that election - a felon (Trump) is running for the presidency, he has FLAT-OUT said he’s going to be a dictator on day 1, and has plans to completely eliminate a LOT of rights people take for granted and have fought for for years.

We need to unite once more behind Biden. Not because he’s your favorite (he may well not be), not because he’s perfect (he isn’t), but because if we DON’T we may never have another election in this country. It will be a major defeat for basically anyone who isn’t white, male, and evangelical.

Rally the troops. Stand up again like you did in 2020. Get out the vote. We’ve got to make this happen.

A battle was won. The war is far from over.

38.3% of eligible voters in New York voted in the 2022 general.

if you do not participate you do not get to complain when the time comes where your rights are getting stripped away and more people are dying than ever before. you will have done it to yourself.

your refusal to participate in the collective game is in itself a decision to murder millions of people abroad and disenfranchise millions of people stateside. you are pushing the button. you are flipping the switch.

your inaction is complicity. this will be your fault.

Today's aesthetic: cosmic horror tabletop RPGs from the 1980s whose creators wrote the "madness rules" by simply plagiarising a list of disorders and their descriptions from the DSM-II and turning it into a d100 lookup table, except the DSM-II still listed "homosexuality" as a mental disorder (it wasn't removed until the DSM-III), with the result that there are several published tabletop RPGs where there's a small but non-zero chance that seeing Cthulhu will make you gay.

(Amusingly, one such game was later re-used as the core system for a licensed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG, and the madness rules were carried over verbatim, with the result that seeing Cthulhu can also make your ninja turtle gay.)
