People on tumblr are like "I'm handing all my mutuals a bowl of soup we are kissing with tongue we are the bestest of besties I am killing and dying for you" but sometimes me and the mutuals are posting completely different shit existing on the same blogging platform but really we're just standing in the alley going "ayup" at each other like fucking king of the hill.

Remind me to make a longer post about this later, but I think there's an interesting similarity in the way nonbinary (or genderqueer people in general) talk about the nuances of their gender and how people really big into specific music scenes talk about the nuances of the genres they listen to. Like there's the description you give other people in your community, and the "normie" description you give to people who aren't as familiar. And "genre" and "gender" are both constructs in similar ways too. Just my little binary observation tho.

I'll expand more on this later. But anyway, start asking people what genre they are and what gender of music they listen to.

here's that longer post, but keep in mind i'm halfway through a bottle of soju rn

so as a binary trans person, i often had a difficult time understanding the really specific genders and gender identities i'll see. obviously i'll still support them, but i had trouble understanding. and that's just because my gender journey has been different.

sometimes (in less than positive circles) i'll see bad faith arguments against people with these genders like "the census isn't going to mark you down as 'catgender' lmao" which is annoying because i've never seen anyone say that?

the thesis of this post started to prickle in my head when i saw genderqueer mutuals of mine reblogging that post that was like "what is the gender identity you describe yourself as around cis people, and what's the specific one you actually identify as?" reading through people's responses and the way they described the nuances of their genders made me go

"oh shit, it's all music"

because if i'm listening to altar of plagues and my coworker asks what kind of music i'm listening to, i'm just going to say "metal". and if my grandma asks, i'll just say "rock". but if i'm talking to another person who i know is familiar with metal, that's when i feel like i wouldn't be wasting my breath going into specifics. because i know they'd know how describing a band as "black metal" is different than describing one as "power metal" or whatever.

that's what a lot of bad faith arguments around nonbinary genders don't seem to realize. they're not for the cishet majority to understand. i'd even argue that they're not for binary trans people to understand either, considering it took me this long to understand.

but it seems like when people talk about their gender through the lens of anything that goes beyond just male, female, or even strictly nonbinary, it comes from a place of wanting to discuss the nuances of gender identity.

like here's an interaction between two hip-hop heads that has never happened:

person 1: i like memphis rap -- specifically horrorcore.

person 2: okay, i have no followup questions. let's talk about something that has nothing to do with rap or music.

like if someone is coming out as cloudgender to you, it's because they think you're someone who can hang and talk about what that means. what does "cloudgender" mean to you? is it the constantly-shifting state? the association with the weather? the moodiness? the same way two people could have a 6 hour heated discussion about the differences between delta blues and hill country blues, but if you played a charley patton song back to back with an rl burnside song, some people who aren't familiar with blues won't be able to tell the difference. you might as well play the same song twice. so if someone identifies as a demigirl in some circles but to you they just say they're nonbinary or even just "female", they clocked you as a gender normie lol.

and just like gender, genre "doesn't exist", but it still has societal impact. a lot of the blues i listen to wouldn't sound out of place next to country artists. where are the lines? race? class? culture? all of the above? and this becomes muddier when you look at marketing. being plastered with a specific genre can be the kiss of death for your mainstream career, or the thing that pushes you to the top. it's a social construct, but we are social people.

anyway, i hope this makes sense. as a binary trans person i'm not sure where i fit in this analogy. maybe it's like i listened to a bunch of specific subgenres and went like "yeah these all scratch the same itch for me". but if people find meaning within the nichest of niche genres, i think that's amazing. you are an onion and you just kept peeling. when i see people with identities like bloodgender or flowergender, i see someone with a much more nuanced and complex relationship with their gender than i ever could have. i see poetry. i see music.

the booze is catching up with me.

someone mentioned it in the notes but ‘genre’ is gender in french, they are the same latin word. this concept is not just similar or analogous - it is literally the same concept

This is an amazing way to think about it, and it feels exactly how I feel about what use I use in what context about my gender

every time i feed my cat i think of who woulge? “dinner” it is my cat.

oh this post is actually incomprehensible isn’t it

this one this is the Image

I made this image. That’s my cat Lola.

This pic is almost 3 years old. She doesn’t eat Fancy Feast anymore because she has thyroid issues so we give her special dinner.

Image

I was completely lucid when I made this picture.

please explain the picture

I saw this picture on Twitter years ago & it reminded me of my cat. She used to wear a collar that had a jingly bell on it, Then we took it off, and she got good at sneaking onto tables and eating butter when no one was looking. Also she likes to eat her dinner very fast.

A lot of people got hung up on the word “woulge” for some reason. People like to obsess over every little thing & assume it has some hidden, deeper meaning, like it’s some kind of puzzle to solve. I made it say “woulge” because I thought it would look funny.

the asl sign for “transgender“ is basically the same as the sign for ”beautiful“ but signed at the chest instead of in front of the face.

so that’s cool.

this is my imperfect not-a-fluent-signer understanding but:

(based on a presentation by a deaf trans guy i was at in 2005 where he was promoting that sign)

it seems like that sign was invented and implemented by trans people over the last 10-ish years. before that the predominant vocabulary was “sex change” and then some deaf trans people were like “yo fuck that” and came up with the current sign, which starts off with the sign for “myself,” then motion that indicates both change and coming together, and ends with the closed hand held against the sternum.

and in the process it also mimics the sign for “beautiful”

and because of spatial grammar, things closer to the front of your body in ASL are generally more vital, more emphatic, more immediate, more present.

so it’s actually a case where the word coherently indicates “beauty” and “self transformation” and contains hints of the complete thought of “my self transforming, through a coming together of disparate factors, into something more real, immediate, and vital than I was before.”

so yeah. that’s just fuckin’ awesome.

and that’s just the way to express that concept now.

Thats really beautiful

IT’S BEEN SO LONG I’M SO SORRY

nancy being the gun in her own metaphor…. yeah. truly. barb was really serving her purpose as a catalyst character (no hate to barb ofc! and it’s only because nancy was so emotionally tied to barb that the role worked but yknow. for what we saw of barb on-screen she was acting as a catalyst and a drag-both-wheelers-into-this kinda thing). on the other hand, it would’ve been an amusing sit-com style show if they added some element of nancy having no idea what’s going on. her and steve and maybe jonathan knows? but they Can Obviously Tell something’s up when their little brothers are visibly hiding something -> something turns out to be a small girl who was raised in a lab and has superpowers. mike making up the stupidest lies and nancy not buying them for a second but then again, who goes from “my brother and his friends are being weirder than usual” to “well damn ig they’re hiding the existence of a hellscape parallel universe”. tangent over lmao but you get the point !!

scuse you the writers are lit rally hinting at ronance becoming canon have you not seen these absolutely and completely real script moments . picture below. (/j but i wISH they would drop anything. one line,, one thought,,,, pls)

THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RONANCE PART I THINK. nancy must come to the terrifying realization one day that she has friends again and. it sounds funny but god you know she would Freak Out over the idea of letting another person get close to her. but robin calling her up from family tree video to tell nancy about something that really, truly, could not have waited to be told. and nancy, smiling fondly the whole time and doing her little phone cord twirly thing !! and robin makes fun of nancy’s driving skills but only from a safe distance outside the car, and nancy narrows her eyes from behind the wheel of her very crookedly parked car and says “shut up”. gay.

SOMETHING OF A DYNAMIC GOING ON THERE INDEED!! they have the brain and willpower to pull it off

OH MY GOD YEAH. the byers-hopper family… is one of those families that’s been hit so many times and they’re going to brave the apocalypse together as a family. and they’re warm and cozy like home-cooked meals and old lamps and blankets piled upon the couch. and then the wheelers are trying so hard to live the stock photo family life… ted wearing his stupid dress shirts from his rocking chair and reading the newspaper 24/7… the kids are all gay and they must know but none of them are ever going to say anything…. quite literally a nuclear family. the wheelers have literally modeled themselves after the thirty-second scenes in tv shows of “happy average suburban families” and that’s all they know how to do now

HADHSKFJSKF OHHHHH. god it was really a robbery. ronance supremacy but the s1 monster hunting trio vibes were unmatched. they would have been so good together. screw the duffers and their insistence that nancy is a simple minded teenage girl when it comes to high school boys. the fruity four from the upside down yeah sure!! but ALSO. the return of stoncy.

yeah !!! i can’t quite pinpoint why it’s so central to her character, whether it has something to do with the roots of her journalism passion or not, but it’s been a recurring pattern for nancy to be drawn to the people who can understand without having to be shielded from the full truth. perhaps there’s some wheeler family thing going on ? the wheelers have virtually no communication skills but it sure would help if someone who you get close to is also aware of the lurking danger and :sparkles: shared trauma :sparkles: yknow. the mike point is so good and,, clearly they don’t talk about their feelings and fears with one another. but especially on nancy’s end because what could she possibly say to her younger brother that wouldn’t essentially imply she was upset that his best friend was alive while hers wasn’t?

YEAHYEHAYEJSHF. she’s so intricate and now it’s such a connection. nancy wheeler brainrot. instead of brain there is nancy wheeler…. i love talking about her with YOU <3333

OH TRUE . they all need a metaphorically through shaking up and down. that house. that house!

and woah! me reveal?? probably unnecessary and i def could’ve just copied the link to the original post over but no matter the deed is done! please ignore the fact that i still have not nancy wheeler ified the blog i will eventually get around to it! besides tumble mobile phone browser logged out is really an experience <3

HEYYYY sorry for the late reply teehee

LOL i love the idea of nancy being in the dark for longer. i think it would literally drive her up the walls crazy until she figures it out and the notion of her figuring it out completely independently from everything else is pretty funny and would be an interesting concept!!! also the thought of if in season 1 nancy and mike had more interactions after both of them knowing about the supernatural but knowing the other knew and so they're both being dodgy and so weird lol

#REALSCRIPT but i'd literally believe it.....when they were walking in the upside down i just KNOW nancy was so mad at robin for running ahead and leaving her in an awkward conversation with her ex!!!! also they are definitely the kind of couple that locks eyes when someone around them is being annoying/awkward...having a silent conversation and slightly rolling their eyes and laughing about it later.........bitchy gfs!!!!!!!

NANCY HAVING TO REALIZE SHE HAS FRIENDS AGAIN AHHHHH it's so true and i think it would stir up such an interesting mix of feelings for her. like i love the scene where she's being questioned at the trailer park and everyone shows up and her face kinda collapses in relief!!!!!!! it makes so much sense why nancy would be the most on the fringe of everyone that remains in hawkins at the start of s4 (other than max) bc she pulls away and seems to think she doesnt know how to be a friend to anyone anymore. like even before s4 her quote "isn't it weird we only seem to hang out when the world's ending?" applies to her relationship with like everyone!!!!!

also robin making fun of nancy's poor driving and nancy is just like you do not even have a license. them fighting over what music to play (nancy wins like most of the time)!!! them always arriving earlier than everyone else bc nancy is very careful but she's also a total menace on the road. car hijinks!!

there is something so special and important to me about the thought of jonathan and will being secretly jealous of mike and nancy because they never have to worry about bills or money or college or whether their dad is going to be normal-terrible or scary-terrible. all the while mike and nancy are secretly jealous of the byers (and now byers-hoppers) because there is such an easy affection, communication comes so natural to them they dont even have to always put it to words, just an overall feeling of loving and safety and closeness that could not be more nonexistent in the wheeler household. and, like you said about nancy and her communication skills, that's a part of why nancy is so guarded, she just doesn't know how to be close like that with people. or maybe she does, or she did once, but it doesn't come easily. but by the end of s5 will have that beautiful found family and so many people in her life that she can be open to AND THAT WILL BE HER HAPPY ENDING NOT BORING MARRIED WITH CHILDREN I BELIEVE IT......

we are going to get stoncy next season steve and jonathan are going to fall in an upside down hole and robin and nancy have to figure out a way to get them out (i keep saying this)

as a fellow nancy brain rot haver did you also go through the 5 stages of grief when that supposed script leaked and it seemed like she was into the idea of 6 kids + rv life......IDC ABOUT SHIPS the complete character assassination that entailed i needed to lie down. also i was thinking about what an exhausting hiatus it was going to be if i had to defend her nonstop for the jonathan who? of it all. (side note that script being fake is so hilarious whoever wrote it is so nasty for "jonathan who?" and "i hate who i am" LOL)

HIIIIII BTW IT IS SO NICE TO KNOW YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! did you know that collectively we have written ~10k words just about nancy wheeler. new dsm entry just for us

trying a new thing here (rbing) this. might be too long when added on to but that's okay

OH ABSOLUTELY. nancy and robin raising their eyebrows at one another from across the table whenever someone says something stupid,, definitely the type to tell one another all about x conversation in the car on the way home.

god yeah !!!! especially with the way they structure the show and all the larger timeskips, it's so easy to assume that the whole gang and their subsections stick together which. they do address more with s4 (lucas joining the basketball team, hellfire induction, max drifting away from the group etc) but realistically speaking, there's no way nancy doesn't take her perceived cue and step back when there's no immediate threat to the kids yknow. ahdslfhd nancy's "isn't it weird we only seem to hang out when the world's ending?" is so funny bc. she's literally talking to the kid known at school for being a complete loner, while she herself is only shown to have one (1) real friend and also her boyfriend. nancy and jonathan would be the people who, for the first year of their friendship, only hang out outside of school when they're bringing their brothers to one another's houses

LMAO EXACTLY. robin will suggest biking somewhere and it starts the whole "i could just drive" cycle. this is the first criticism nancy's heard of her driving skills (mike complains all the time but he doesn't count, and both steve and jonathan are too afraid of her to say anything). car hijinks indeed!! it's okay though bc they start teaching mike how to drive and it goes so terribly that no one can say anything about nancy's skills. robin cracks up for a whole hour after making a joke about the wheelers not being able to drive

oh holy frick your mind... yeah. you put it into words so well. they've got such different internal lives, and on a more innocent level (mike and will), the byers and wheelers can coexist and help each other in other ways. it's more subtle, but things like most of the dnd nights being at mike's, where there's plenty of food and space despite the wheelers having three kids. mike having his room full of toys and figurines and things like a millenium falcon model, whereas will has his more intimate gifts like the crayon set from his mom and jonathan's mixtape. and on the jonathan nancy level, where for nancy, the job was a crucial start to her passion and hopefully career into journalism, but for jonathan, he was letting things slide because he needed the job for the income and as a way to help his family. and even the scenes that they have together!! jonathan and will bonding over songs, even as they're both aware that it's a distraction to keep will from worrying about the shouting. nancy and mike glaring at each other over the kitchen table, but it definitely goes deeper. i think while jonathan's anxieties as an older sibling center around protecting will and providing for the family so his mom doesn't have to do as much, nancy's kinda center around this idea or fear that the wheeler siblings are growing up to be strangers in their own household. there's hardly any scenes with them (nancy mike and jonathan will) but even with those scraps, we can see that they stand in different places. will and jonathan have the jonathan watching will in the rearview mirror, then later confronting and comforting him about being in love with mike. they've always had to look out for one another, and they're not afraid to show their affection to one another. that's where the byers-hopper family has found its strength. on the contrary, the wheeler family is very much shaped around the idea that they're living a good life, with enough money and food to be comfortable, and that should be enough to pick up slack where the actual emotion of love fails to make itself prevalent

(new paragraph because jesus christ that's a lot of words in one block my bad) in that scene where mike is asking nancy to be a stand-in for the hellfire campaign! people have pointed out that background reactions in the newsroom are along the lines of "nancy has a brother?" and nancy obviously turns down the idea of joining for a day. however. if that were will coming to ask jonathan if he'd like to join, despite his lack of experience or specific knowledge, no doubt people would be well aware of jonathan's younger brother will. not that this would ever happen ofc because the news articles and zombie boy and etc etc but, if it did play out like this, no doubt jonathan and will's different relationship would have seeped through jonathan's self-isolation and whatnot. but yeah wHAT YOU SAID !!! s5 WILL have nancy and mike getting closer and it WILL allow nancy to connect with people and everything will be good and happy

so true honestly,, the fruity four has a great dynamic but imagine the scenes between stoncy + ronance. nancy and robin each have a braincell, jonathan and steve kinda pass one back and forth, but when they're all together somehow the braincells evaporate. they're all great in a fight, but anything involving human emotion and non-fight communication is lost

as a fellow nancy brainrot haver i DID go through the five stages of grief. the absolute falling-off-a-cliff of nancy's character development istg. every bit of character development that the fandom had been pouring into the cracks of canon writing just... gone. but after they were confirmed as fake i will say that the jonathan who? line is hilarious. (I KNOW RIGHT. SEVERELY UNCALLED FOR FAKE SCRIPT WRITER)

HI !!!! IT'S SO NICE TO MEET YOU PROPERLY ISH :D and. oh. damn. that's a lot of words woah. maybe the real friendship was the dsm entry we unintentionally produced along the way.
