If you follow Selmers to the poetry society meeting in Night In The Woods, this is her poem. I loved it and the themes of the game, and wanted to use it as practice to see if i can control the way readers ‘hear’ the words through images.
the biden administration recently cracked down on overdraft fees which means banks cannot force you to pay them as they have become opt-in -- however you do have to call the bank (for example, paypal payments overdraft you even if you have opted out, as they function like checks.)
my experience is with wellsfargo but i imagine that most major banks may operate similarly:
8. i cannot emphasize this enough -- be nice !!!!!!!!!!! BE NICE! be cheerful, say "thank you" and "no worries" and "take your time!". it is NOT a confrontation, it is NOT their fault, and most of the time the customer service representative wants this to be as frictionless as possible. they are helping you, use the opportunity to make a moment of their day a lot less stressful than they expect it to be.
that is ALL -- i have been using wellsfargo for over eight years, and have lost hundreds of dollars to predatory overdraft fees charged as a punishment for having no money.
during the beginning covid, when they were momentarily suspended (you had to mention covid on the phone to get them back lol), i came to the realization that all of this time they could have been giving me my money back. there was no reason not to, except corporate greed.
do not let phone social anxiety let them take your money from you, now that it is easier than EVER to get it back. and if you need motivation to pick up the phone, remember this headline from a couple of years back lol:
DEATH TO CAPITALISM !!!!!!
i know hearing people on this website love to pass around those posts with links to free sign language lessons but you know you need to actually put effort into learning about Deaf culture, too, right?
resources for other Deaf cultures include, but are not limited to:
#u literally can’t use Aboriginal sign languages without knowing the culture there are sooooo many different languages and while some may #overlap due to close locations etc there will be different meanings (tags via @skeletonflower)
#Hier zijn wij! Dovengemeenschap in Nederland – Bea Bouwmeester & Linde Terpstra #for the dutch deaf community (tags via @missing-a-place-ive-never-been)
#I haven’t finished it but I also HIGHLY suggest Deaf in Japan (free to borrow on the internet archive) #I used as a ref for some writing but it was also a fantastic book (tags via @dogsharks)
on Hand Talk (aka Plains Sign Talk or First Nations Sign Language):
more for ASL:
#queer asl is an org that teaches Deaf history in their classes! #you can take classes from anywhere cause they do it over zoom and the prices are pay what you can! (tags via @oldukrainiangentleman)
#Oh I read all of For Hearing People Only #which basically is a comprehensive book on FAQ to the Deaf and HOH #it came from this magazine where you could ask questions about the culture and stuff (tags via @hopepluseggo)
#deaf culture: exploring deaf communities in the united states (2nd edition) is a good one too (tags via @ratsquid)
I have exactly one (1) lifehack for every adult thing and that is “admit your ignorance to customer service people”
no, seriously! I know how nothing in adult life works, but I have learned it by calling up the customer service division of whatever agency I am having a problem with and then just asking about whatever the problem is, emphasizing my complete lack of knowledge about the thing.
my actual literal script for these interactions: “Hi, my name is [name]. This is my problem: [problem]. I don’t know how [adult thing] works. could you explain how [adult thing] works?” it fucking works every time.
me: I keep getting conflicting information as to whether my therapist is covered by my health insurance. I don’t know anything about health insurance, so this is very confusing to me. could you explain why this might be happening? health insurance customer service: it’s because your normal health insurance is X company but your mental healthcare is subcontracted out to Y company, and Y covers your therapist but X doesn’t. just always bill Y when you go to your therapist and you’ll be fine.
me: I accidentally put the wrong date to pay my credit card off and I’m afraid it will post before I get paid. this is my first credit card so I don’t know what I’m doing. could you tell me when it will post? customer service person: it will send a message to your bank today, but your bank won’t respond to it until tomorrow when you get paid, so you’re fine. and even if it does bounce, the fee is only $25 and you qualify for a waiver.
me: I went to an urgent care place that said they’d take my health insurance, but now i have a big bill. I don’t know how billing works: can you explain why the amount is so much for such a routine trip? customer service person: it’s because you were out of network at the time. however, since your insurance hasn’t covered the cost of care, the urgent care people should refund you for the cost of the services you paid for. me: [gets actual check in mail for the $200 I spent on testing my pee]
I would not recommend this method for retail (for the love of god, do not tell a sleazy car dealer that you don’t know how cars work), and sure, sometimes you have to speak to the manager or threaten a credit card chargeback or whatever you need to do. but 99% of the time, speaking nicely and admitting to needing help has worked wonders for me, and means I don’t have to stew in terror over doing some adult thing Wrong.
This 100% goes for appliance support as well. If you dont have your instructions or don’t understand how the appliance works or have forgotten the customer service person will CHEERFULLY go through step by step if you admit you don’t know and don’t shout. Usually we can solve the issue, unless you cut your dishdrawer in half so it’ll fit on your boat then i can’t help I’m afraid.
that… that sounds like an awfully specific example 👀
A bird explaining to a hedgehog crossing so it doesn’t die.
!!! ok but that’s legitimately what it’s doing!! That’s a corvid right there (looks like a hooded crow, to be precise), which means it’s intelligent enough to recognize, a) cars are dangerous and streets should be treated with a certain degree of caution, b) this car’s slowing down for them–cars do that sometimes–which means they’re not in imminent danger, so it doesn’t have to fly away just yet, c) that hedgehog’s still gonna get killed if it doesn’t MOVE, FAST (cars can change speed very quickly and the hedgehog’s still in the way), and almost certainly also d) if the bird does nothing it gets a free lunch.
Y’all, Y’ALL. This bird is consciously deciding to put itself in danger in order to save the life of a very stupid creature. A creature which, if the bird did nothing, could be free food.
i can’t - look if you follow me you know I have a thing for corvids, but this is - like!!! People are always saying “ah yes they have sub-human intelligence and don’t consider anything that isn’t immediately necessary for their own survival/pleasure,” but! Whether or not it can do philosophy, this crow is clearly demonstrating compassion. Even if it’s just the kind of compassion a toddler shows to a snail, a social creature that instinctively recognizes the potential for emotion in other beings, that’s still huge and cool and important and corvids!!! are! neat!!!
Also, by the car stopping for them, that hedgehog has two other species actively working to help it stay alive for no gain of their own.
Reminds me of that professor who said the beginning of civilization was when someone took care of another. The broken thigh bone thing.
“Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts. We are at our best when we serve others.” - Margaret Mead

It’s a simple concept. There’s a hidden “mafia” within U.A, and it’s up to the “police” to stop it. It becomes a lot less simple when Izuku Midoriya is chosen as the mafia leader. (Inspired by ‘Hero Class Civil Warfare’ by RogueDruid)

Turned some of my old art into masks! If you see this please RT to help fight Tumblr’s algorithm against links. I’m just a small artist trying to meet my bills. Thanks!
i love you
(i think i might hate you)
you're my mother
(you were supposed to be, at least.)
you have been the one constant in my life
(but you're never here. always just out of reach...)
i'm your loving son
(all you see when you look at me is a daughter that can keep the house clean and raise your child for you.)
i breathe easy in the safety of my own home
(i feel like im suffocating the second i step into this house. i can't breathe here. the air is stifling. i taste dust with every breath.)
i am thriving
(i think i might be dying)
thank you for loving me
(you act as though it is gracious of you to give me a roof over my head and food to eat. as though these were privileges and not human rights. not something you are legally obligated to provide)
i love you
(i do. i love you so much because you have always been there, even if i could never reach you. you are my mother and i love you. i have to. i think i might go insane if i didnt. but i also hate you because all the times you have wronged me burn far more than anything anyone else has ever done. you were supposed to be there for me every step of the way. you were supposed to raise and love me, but you deemed your career more important. you deemed the children you worked with to be more important than your own child will ever be to you.)
i love you.
(i hate you so so much.)
hey guys just wanted to say that like. it does get better. i moved out of my moms place the day i turned 18 with only a few boxes of shit. i'm living with a friend now and im on the hunt for a job. it gets better. you're gonna be ok!
Children in abusive families aren’t accepted nor acknowledged as the valuable member of the family. They’re being told they’re freeloaders, someone allowed to live in the house who should be grateful they get to sleep there. They’re considered a financial burden, and an emotional one, if they ever need attention or care. They’re told to compare themselves to children who aren’t so lucky and are starvng on the street, or being abused much worse my caretakers. They’re forced to count their blessings, as if each and every one of them isn’t used against them. They’re only being presented as the children to guests and outsiders, who parents are trying to impress or play normal family game in front of. They’re being used by parents to feel good about themselves, and then discarded as if they’re worthless.
In healthy families no child is considered a burden, or less valuable than any other person in the family, it’s the opposite, the parents are able to acknowledge that as the youngest and most vulnerable member, the child should get most attention, care and help growing up and forming into an individual. In healthy families there’s no question of letting the child be hungry if there’s food, threatening them of losing place to sleep if they are able to provide a bed. There’s no comparing the child to those who were less lucky, it’s parents who question if they could do anything better, make the life of their child better. Child doesn’t have to worry about finances, or have anything they have or do used against them, they know whatever belongs to parents, is theirs as well, and they know if something goes wrong, parents are going to have their back. Healthy families give children feeling of safety, stability, value, confidence, support, and community. They’re a pillar of strength for the child. Child doesn’t have to fulfill certain conditions to deserve it, or work tirelessly to deserve to be a part of the family. There’s no game of pretense in front of outsiders, they’re not only a child of these people in certain conditions or when the parents find it convenient, they’re treated well at all times.
our momentum is slowing down. we can’t let our dashes go back to normal when the world is not normal. so, if you are reading this, you are ~legally~ obligated to choose 2 numbers below; you must complete the task of those two numbers today. don’t pretend you didn’t see this. either do them right now or set a reminder to get it done before the sun goes down. the timer starts now. choose two.
sleep is for the weak. im a superior lifeform that stays up all night everynight and barely survives on just a few hrs of sleep
