Why People Ship Reddie

I’m finally getting around to writing this post!! Thank you so much to all of you who messaged me (@richietozzzier @nikkiesea @coraz0n-delator @ardentverdure @fandomtrash2405 to name a few as well as a bunch of anons!). I just wanted to list some scenes from the movie and book explaining why so many people ship Reddie, so here you go! Please feel free to add stuff on :)

Movie: 

- A good majority of the time when either Richie or Eddie are on screen, they’re interacting with one another. Not only do they have hilarious banter back in forth, it’s very obvious they also care about each other immensely.

- Richie is always seen worrying about Eddie’s well being and putting himself at risk to make sure Eddie is okay. During the projector scene, he grabs and hugs Eddie and rubs his back. At Neibolt Street, he holds Eddie’s face to calm him down/make him not look at Pennywise (despite the fact that clowns are his biggest fear!), he rubs Eddie’s shoulder when his hand gets cut. Just to name a few, there are many other moments in the film.

- Richie’s always using Eddie’s mom as the butt of the joke or playing his jokes off of Eddie (ex. when they go to the well, Richie asks Eddie if he has a quarter)

- Cute little moments they have together! Eddie getting Richie ice cream, them talking about something funny when walking into Ben’s room, being the only two that hug at the end

- Richie goes into the clown room (again, his biggest fear) because he thinks Eddie is in there. In reality, Pennywise is presenting himself as Eddie to lure Richie in. Pennywise shows itself as a person’s biggest fear, so at least for a moment Richie’s biggest fear is losing Eddie. He will risk everything to save him.

Book:

- Richie always calls Eddie nicknames, whether it be “Eds”, “my love”, or just calling him cute a lot. Eddie always says he hates it, but in the book he thinks to himself that he actually kinda liked it, too.

- Richie always making suggestive jokes to Eddie and winking.

- One day when they’re hanging out alone, Richie tells Eddie about all of his ambitions of become a famous ventriloquist as an adult. Eddie says he really admired Richie (although he saw flaws in his plan, since Richie’s ventriloquism wasn’t very good) 

- Richie literally tells Eddie that he saw how cute he was the first time they ever met.

- In the book, too, Richie is often making sure Eddie is okay. (During the Rockfight, after it’s over Richie is the one to get Eddie’s inhaler and put it in his mouth for him, Richie is holding onto Eddie when they’re running from Henry and into the drainpipe)

- Stephen King literally wrote a scene into the book where Eddie is licking Richie’s “rocket” ice pop and it’s very suggestive and it does not seem like that’s an accident. All him not me.

- When Eddie gets his arm ripped off, his last words are to Richie. Richie is holding Eddie and Eddie is touching his cheek. His last words are “Don’t call me Eds… You know I… I…” 

- The other Losers are sad about Eddie dying, but Richie is freaking out and sobbing and holding him. Richie tries to carry Eddie out and the others tell him to leave him. Richie nearly refuses to leave Eddie there, saying that it’s too dark and Eddie wouldn’t want that. 

- When Richie finally has to leave him, he kisses his cheek before screaming “Fuck you, bitch” and kicking the door shut. When Bev asks why he did that, it says: “’I don’t know,” Richie said, but he knew well enough.” Take that as you will. 

There are other things that make people ship them, including the amount of things in the book that point to Eddie being gay, as well as some moments they had in previous versions of the movie scripts. If you want me to make separate posts for those lmk! 

Hi I’m here to add some stuff that cool people on here told me I missed in the book!! Thank you for mentioning them!! I also wanted to add some from two of the original scripts, the 2014 and 2015 versions by Cary Fukunaga, because Richie is canonically gay in the 2015 version and it’s hinted that he likes Eddie as more than a friends. They also have some moments in the 2014 script. It’s something very interesting to consider because their relationship was acknowledged by one of the script writers. 

Book (cont):

- In the chapter introducing Eddie as an adult, he is describing how much he hates his current living situation and his wife. However, the first person or thing at all that he thinks about is Richie. As he’s thinking about going to Derry his first thought is RIchie, saying, “Maybe Richie Tozier would–” before stopping himself. Just as he’s talking about how much he hates Myra, he thinks of Richie. 

- During one of Richie’s encounters with It, It says to him “You come down and see it anytime. Just any old time you like. You hear me, Richie? Bring your yo-yo. Have Beverly wear a big full skirt with four or five petticoats underneath. Have her wear her husband’s ring around her neck! Get Eddie to wear his saddle-shoes! We’ll play some bop, Richie! We’ll play AAALLLL THE HITS!” The fact that dancing with Eddie is mentioned alongside Bev is interesting because Richie expresses that he was, at the very least physically, attracted to Bev even though he could never see her as anything other than one of the guys. However, the fact that Eddie is also mentioned in a way insinuate Richie having some sort of similar feelings for him, and the want to dance with him as he would with Bev. 

- As kids when they fight It, afterwards Richie is telling Eddie how impressed with his bravery he is. He “giggled” at Eddie saying he was doing the Mashed Potato all over it and he had a broken arm. Eddie says he hates when Richie calls him “Eds” and Richie says he knows but “somebody has to toughen [him] up”. Eddie laughs really hard at one of their voices and they hug.

2014 Script: 

- After Beverly jumps first into the water, Richie and Eddie (who both admit to being scared) hold each others hands before jumping in

- It’s mentioned that Richie is holding Eddie during a part where they’re all scared and he’s trying to protect him (** if anyone knows what part this is in please lmk and i’ll edit this!)

2015 Script:

- In the basement of Neibolt Street, Richie and Eddie are huddling together out of fear. 

- Richie gives Eddie a Ding Dong, stating that he “knows what the Eddie-bear likes.”

- Richie helps Eddie into a chute before their fight with It, and Pennywise tells Richie not to touch the other boys or they’ll know his secret. Obviously, (shown here as well as in many other scenes in the film showing Richie as gay) Pennywise is talking about Richie being gay and possibly having a crush on Eddie.

- After the Losers beat Pennywise and Bev kisses “Will” (Bill), it describes that Richie is holding Eddie, wary of the celebration.

Reddie Christmas Headcanon

~Eddie wears like ten layers of clothing every time there is any snow on the ground and he ends up looking like that kid from ‘The Christmas Story’

~Richie always teases him for this but he secretly thinks that its the cutest thing ever

~They go over to Eddie’s house and drink hot chocolate and watch ‘Gremlins’ Richie inches his hand closer to eddies until Eddie finally just grabs Richie’s hand and smiles at him while Richie blushes like crazy

~All of the losers build an igloo and Richie and Eddie stay in there all day because neither of them wants to go home

~Richie got grounded for a week after punching a kid who made fun of Eddie for still believing in Santa Claus

~When they get older Richie always buys Eddie a bunch of joke presents that Eddie pretends that he hates but he secretly loves them

~Anytime they walk above some sort of plant Richie says that its a mistletoe

~They’ll be walking under a tree branch and Richie will be all “O god Eds its a mistletoe you better kiss me its the law” and he’ll pucker his lips at him “Damn it Richie that’s an oak tree”

~Richie sings “All I Want For Christmas Is You” to Eddie all through out the month of December

~They snuggle and watch Christmas movies in their onesies

~They are soft seasonal boyfriends
