WELL. SO. I’ve been counting down for months and finally the ‘I Can See You’ video is out. I wrote this video treatment over a year ago and really wanted to play out symbolically how it’s felt for me to have the fans helping me reclaim my music. I had my heart set on Joey King, Taylor Lautner and Presley Cash starring in it. Joey and Presley had been in the video for ‘Mean’ when they were 9 and 13 and they are back and so ridiculously bad ass!! Taytay is INCREDIBLE in this (didn’t have a stunt double!) and shout out to Tay Lautner for being so awesome to hang with on set. The Tale of 3 Taylors 😆 I always wanted to direct fight scenes/a heist storyline and had the most incredible time plotting this out with my amazing DP Jonathan Sela. So proud of this one.

About a year and half ago I wrote a song about an incredible story, the story of a girl who always lived on the outside, looking in. Figuratively and literally. The juxtaposition of her loneliness and independence. Her longing and her stillness. Her curiosity and fear, all tangled up. Her persisting gentleness… and the world’s betrayal of it. I wrote this one alone in the middle of the night and then Aaron Dessner and I meticulously worked on a sound that we felt would be authentic to the moment in time when this story takes place. It’s the one thing I wish they would have really gotten into in IM1 that they didn’t touch on. How much pain he’d be in. The sudden loss of lung capacity. The way coughing would hurt. The way his ribs curling in when he lays on his side would be agonizing. The way when he lays on his back he feels like he’s suffocating from the weight of it pushing on his spine and lungs. The way it tugs down from gravity and sits heavy on his sternum when he’s standing. Just ugh. He probably deals with constant, unending pain and he never, ever complains about it.

I like to think that Bruno was amazing with the kids and they absolutely loved him. Of course Mirabel and Camilo didn't remember much about him besides the negative stuff, but I love how Isabela, Luisa and Dolores never bad-mouthed him in the movie.. so that leads me to believe that they were all besties :')
