Anonymous asked:

is Apollo truly blond? I found that greek ethnic characteristics are dark hair and olive skin, just a little group of them are white and blond. I think that the fact Apollo is the god of sun not means he is blond, for example, Ares is the god of war but he doesn't take the victory in wars all the time.

Well I don’t think Apollo was given golden hair because he was seen as the sun god. As I had once read, golden hair (and gold in general) was a symbol of high status, nobility (divinity) - something that set the people possessing it apart from most of the crowd. Apollo is more frequently described as having golden hair, but he’s not the only one. Leto, Demeter, Dionysus are also sometimes seen having such hair. Among mortals, Achilles, Helen also have golden hair, this is to show that they are extraordinary, and different from rest of the mortals. Anyway, that’s all my knowledge on this topic. If you have further questions, you can ask @coloricioso about it, who is much more knowledged than me about ancient Greeks.

I don’t want to be rude, but seriously I can not understand what’s people fixation with Greek people “not being white”. Like, PLEASE go to Youtube and watch GREEK TV shows, movies, documentaries, etc. They are white (*look white, look light skinned, whatever you wanna call it), the whole “they are olive dark hair” is a mostly USA misconception and people should stop it.

But anyway, Apollo, as almost all the gods or heroes is described with blond hair (I’m not going into the exact words meaning, which my Greek friends could explain better like “beauty haired” and not exactly “blonde”, but the thing is that statues and paintings show hair colored in the “yellow/orange” or “gold” spectrum).

“I found that greek ethnic characteristics are dark hair and olive skin, just a little group of them are white and blond.“ Are you serious?? How and where did you “find“ that? Half of us look like Germans. Yes, we have a lot of hair and maybe weird noses, but our skin is white 95% of the time. THAT’S WHY HOLLYWOOD DOESN’T CAST GREEKS TO PLAY GREEKS. BECAUSE THEY TELL THEM “THEY DON’T LOOK LIKE GREEKS“. Because of this bs: “Greeks are olive and dark in general”.

I can understand the need for POC representation thing, but maybe DON’T project your politics to US? Greek gods are not a playtoy for your fanfiction or the tool that is going to fix the racial discrimination you are facing. They are part of a culture and some people gave them that appearance some time ago. If you want to respect that culture and you want him to be like a modern Greek, at least take the time to look at Greek shows, as @coloricioso said, or look at Greek models, and don’t rely on the image the Americans have for us. Anon, if you want suggestions for that, you can mention me somewhere or send me an ask.

Honestly, there is NOTHING wrong with darker skin. My problem is that people want to force the “olive skin and dark hair“ in all of us, when it’s not true for a biiiiiig portion of the population. If you want a Greek god to be brown because you think that’s the average Greek man, that shows you haven’t researched shit, and that’s borderline offensive, because you speak for us without evidence.

you tagged this “greek erasure” im CRYINGGGGG
