To autistic people who are starting to menstruate...

Okay I’m gonna go all auntie Cyndi on all my younger autistic followers who are new to having periods. I’ve been having my periods for over 20 years now, so I’m experienced in this.

First off, you may have your first period and not have another one for a few months. Your periods may start and happen like clockwork. Your periods may always be irregular.

It’s normal for your ovulation and menstruation to shift throughout the year just like the seasons shift the sun’s position in the sky.

On average, your period comes about two weeks after you ovulate. I’ve pinned mine down enough to know I bleed exactly 19 days after I ovulate, so I can look at a calendar and figure out within a four day margin of when to expect my period. Note that I said on average, some people may have a shorter or longer menstrual cycle.

You’ll know you’re ovulating when you produce a lot of mucus from your vagina that looks and feels like raw egg white. It’s clear, a little more viscous than your spit, it’s very slippery and it will drip out in long strings. I produce a lot, another person may not produce much. If you notice you’re really slimy down there when you’re wiping after you pee, and the toilet paper comes away with stringy slimy stuff on it, take note of the date you saw that and note the date again when get your period. Keep taking notes and a pattern may emerge. That’s your menstrual cycle.

NOTE: If you have unprotected sex during this time, you have a strong chance of getting pregnant. Sperm can swim a long way and survive a long time in the Fallopian tubes, waiting for an egg to come down. Always assume you can get pregnant between the time of finishing a period and starting the next one.

(And I hope this second one never happens to you, but...)

If you were raped during this time, and if they ejaculated inside you or on your vulva, you may get pregnant.

Always practice safe sex and use birth control if you want to avoid pregnancy, and if you were raped you need to assume they got you pregnant and get help to deal with it ASAP.

Now, lemme tell you a little about periods and autism going together.

PMS and your period can really mess with your sensory issues, your meltdown / shutdown threshold, your tolerance for socializing and your ability to control emotions.

You might have brain fog and just feel yucky and groggy.

You might find you want to sleep more or can’t sleep at all.

You might wake up with your armpits sweating heavily.

You may notice you start sweating with less exertion, or you walk into a warm room and swear you’re standing on the sun.

On the flipside, you may feel colder than usual, so walking into a cooler place will feel like walking into Antarctica.

Your skin may get more oily and that may mean greasier hair and more pimples. I know that feels unfair if you already have a lot of acne and problems with hygiene. If your hair length permits washing your hair in a sink, you can do that if a shower is too much. Try to wash your face gently with a wet washcloth when you wake up and before going to bed. Make sure to remove all your makeup before retiring to sleep if you wear any, because it will clog your pores even more if you don’t.

Your body odor may intensify, so keep baby wipes and deodorant / antiperspirant around if showering is hard. Hand sanitizer wiped on your pits can help in a situation where you realize you reek and can’t wash off, but only use that in emergencies.

You may experience some constipation and gas. That’s progesterone’s fault, sometimes it slows down your colon.

You may go from constipated to having huge, greasy poops or even some diarrhea. That’s your hormones shifting. Sometimes a period is a natural laxative because your intestines move a little faster thanks to the hormones that make your uterus contract (prostaglandins) to push out the endometrium. So if you have issues with fecal incontinence, you may have to deal with extra odors and messes when you change your incontinence protection.

Once your period starts, you’ll probably have to pee a lot more often. This is your body getting rid of the water it retained. If you deal with urinary incontinence, this might mean you need to change your incontinence protection more often to avoid infections, skin breakdown and odors.

Btw, you can dehydrate a little as your body sheds the excess water, so make sure to stay hydrated. I take three small sips or one big gulp from my water bottle after I use the bathroom during my period. It’s a helpful routine.

You may have food cravings and appetite changes. You may feel always hungry or not want to eat much or at all. Your desire to samefood might increase. (Mine is currently the cheese pizza flavored Cheez-Its.) Increased hunger is your body getting ready to lose nutrients through your menstrual flow. If you don’t feel your hunger signals, notice if you feel irritable or weak more often, it may mean you need to eat.

Your boobs may get a little bigger and get achy-feeling, so much that you can’t stand a bra or binder. You may get achy feelings in your joints or muscles. It’s likely water retention.

You may put on some weight. This is also water retention. You may find you always gain around the same about of weight each time you’re close to your period.

You may be really impulsive or take risks you wouldn’t usually take, sometimes to the point of recklessness.

You may feel restless like you want to climb out of your skin. Your frustration threshold might plummet to nothing, so everything is aggravating.

If you have self injurious meltdowns, you may have more SIB than usual. You might also notice an increased need to stim, and sometimes stimming doesn’t help you feel better or calm down.

If you’re physically able, try to do something that makes you exert yourself, like jogging, moving heavy things or some other kind of vigorous exercise. Even dance is good if that’s what you enjoy. Think of it as venting excess energy so it’s not stuck in your chest.

If you’re not physically able to exert yourself, try snuggling under a weighted blanket and pressure stimming. Think of it as drawing excess energy to where you’re putting pressure so it’s not stuck in your chest.

You may have mood swings and default to a certain mood so much that you feel stuck in it.

If you’re prone to migraines, you’re more likely to have one when you’re premenstrual.

All of this can be scary if you’re still new to having periods.

See a doctor if your bad feelings are so bad that you get super depressed and have suicidal thoughts two or more periods in a row, It could be PMDD, which is the nasty older sister of PMS.

PMDD is premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or a very extreme version of PMS.

It’s kinda normal for PMS symptoms to vary in intensity from month to month, but if you find yourself consistently in a very bad mental state before your period, you may need extra help to handle it.

Once your flow starts, you might have bursts of feeling REALLY good or affectionate: that’s because of oxytocin and maybe some serotonin, enjoy it.

Your flow may be fairly light, get heavy and then lighten again. You may start with a lot of gushes and then it lightens up until it stops. If you normally have a light flow and suddenly it turns heavy with an increase in cramping, there may be a problem that needs a doctor to check out. If your heavy flow gets even heavier, to the point that you’re soaking through the thickest pads, there may be a problem. Don’t let them blow you off, be firm. “I don’t normally bleed this much or have this much cramping, something is up.”

Things like stress, weight gain or weight loss can affect your period. Being sick can sometimes throw it off. Periods are fickle, annoying and weird things. Keep track of them, take note of the color and amount of your flow and get to know it. Knowing your body at its baseline will help you recognize it later if something goes wrong. It may take your cycles time to find their “normal” as your body figures out how to handle having periods.

It never hurts to always have a pad, tampon, menstrual cup or whatever you use to catch your flow. Keep it in your backpack, purse, pocket, etc.. If you prefer pads, it’s always a good idea to put one in your underwear if you’re expecting your period and you go out somewhere. That way it won’t be a huge emergency if your flow starts. Putting one in when you go to sleep at the time you expect your period flow can also help you sleep easy and not worry about making a mess in your bed.

(I personally prefer thick pads, so it feels like I won’t leak, but I know that may be a sensory yuck for someone else. Try different things till you find what works.)

Those little gushes you feel occasionally are normal. Yeah, sometimes you will feel your period goop coming out. Some advice: when you’re using the toilet, push a bit and then do a kegel, which is squeezing the muscles in your vagina that stop your pee from flowing— you might push a lot of period stuff out. It’ll help you not have to change your pad as often.

I’m cis, so I can’t speak on how taking testosterone will affect periods. I will leave this open for an autistic person who is taking T to add to this if they want. 👍🏻

Now that I said all that, it’s possible you may have zero premenstrual issues and your period won’t cause you much trouble at all. Every uterus-owning body is different. People already dealing with depression or other mood disorders may have more trouble during their period, or their period may even boost their mood for a short time. As I said, everyone is different.

❤️ Take care! ❤️

first reblog in a while - i feel like this is a bit tmi for my mainblog BUT wanted to add on:

Cramps to the point of needing to skip school, work, etc EVERY time you menstruate? THEY. ARE. NOT. NORMAL.

Cramps CAN be painful. They SHOULD, however, be able to be controlled by whatever basic pain medication you’re able to take, or a heat pad/rest/etc if you can’t take medication/already take it for something else.

Cramps are *in theory* also supposed to be relatively stable month to month - if you get one month that’s super painful, it might just be a bad month. But if your cramps start normal and end up gradually getting to “OMG TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL GET THIS SHIT OUTTA ME!!” levels of painful over time? Doctor. If your cramps NEVER seem normal, or your ‘normal’ is a 10/10 pain level for most people? Doctor.

Track them, if you have to. I recommend apps like Clue - it can track beyond just period symptoms (or at least the ‘classic’ ones like mood, bleeding levels, etc) by tracking your mood, your ability to do things, etc.

I’m 20 and likely have Endometriosis*. I wasn’t even tested for it until a year ago. A YEAR. AGO. I WAS 19. I had my first period at 11-12 and have NO memory of them ever not being horrendously painful. I now take birth control pills year-round (that’s a thing, not all doctors allow it but some DO)

Also an fyi: your periods may always be irregular.. ooor it may be an underlying condition. If you’re noticing other issues, mention it to a doctor *and* stress that your periods are whack.

There are loads of medical issues that can come from having the body parts you do, if you menstruate - HOPEFULLY you have none of them! But if you think you do.. please speak up.

*My condition actually can’t be DXed without exploratory surgery.. that’s known for a: removing the issue or b: making it 10x worse. So THAT’S fun.

Each tile has raised oval that allows for easy pushing up and down with a finger. The three puzzles shown are of different heights: small (4 cm x 4 cm), medium (6.5 cm x 4 cm) and large (8.5 cm x 4 cm). The image of the puzzles in size order somewhat resembles coloured steps. Black text and arrows underneath and beside the three puzzles indicate the size of each.]

Twist/Knock-Off Eni Puzzles - eBay, $2.38 USD and up.

Item has free standard intentional shipping.

For international/non-US stimmers who can’t find affordable Eni puzzles locally, and can’t afford international shipping, there’s a bunch of listings for colourful knock-offs on eBay.

I have no idea how smooth or easy to use these are, or how durable, but the largest is only $3.99 USD. I think it’s worth trying for anyone who wants an Eni puzzle for stimming and has been put off by the price!

i really want the communication bracelets and some other things from stimtastic, but.. hoo boy the postage is more expensive than the items.

does anyone know places stocking twiddles & snap-and-clicks/klixx/etc in australia? :v

sensory oasis for kids does have the twiddles at least but at $12 for the twiddle alone without even considering shipping i’m veeery hesitant to order there..

for context, the stimtastic order with three items was $12 before shipping. all up it costs about $25 which.. god. no. i love stimtastic but i can’t afford that for three things :(

[image description: two stock photos on a white background, each displaying a row of three coiled Tangle Jrs. The viewer’s left-hand photo shows a row of three Tangle Jr Metallics in silver, gold and purple, while the right-hand photo shows a row of three standard Tangle Jrs, in light green/light blue/dark blue, lemon/yellow/translucent orange, and light pink/blue/clear.]

Tangle Jrs - K-Mart, $4 AUD.

Aussies: K-Mart’s website has listings for Tangles!!!

These items are listed as Zuru Tangles, and here’s why: Zuru has partnered with Tangle Creations. This might be why stores like Target in the US are starting to stock whole fidget sections including Tangles, and hopefully this leads towards Tangles being as easy to find as Fidget Cubes.

I checked the “find in store” option, and they’re not in stock near me, but they are in stock in Footscray. Since I’ll be there on Thursday, I’ll see if I can get one, because I am absolutely desperate to know if the Zuru Tangles feel the same as the Tangle Creations Tangles. The colours shown on the website are the standard Tangle colours, no different from the releases we’ve seen over the last few years.

(I’ve got one of the newer in-box Tangle Jrs, and there’s nothing on the box about Zuru; it just lists the Aussie distributor as Britz n’ Pieces.)

So far, there’s only listings for the Tangle Jr Classic and the Tangle Jr Metallics, both $4 AUD. It’s a great price for Tangles here in Australia–I’ve been paying $6 AUD for these from Toyworld, which is nowhere near as easy for me to get to as K-Mart–and I’m hopeful that this might lead to some of the other Tangles being easy to get, too. Or custom print designs like the new Zuru Fidget Cubes!

ohmanohmanohmanohman

i searched using my post code, and the places stocking them are far away.. but they’re there!! munno para is an SA suburb that has them, this gives me hope!i know technically ebay has them cheaper but.. cmon, actual irl tangles!! :D

Avatar

so!! i found a hairy tangle at Kidstuff Marion the other day. it was $15 and the cashier said they usually have them! :D

pros:

  • oh my god it moves so fluidly. i’d rank it high on that, higher than the ebay one i own but probably just a little less fluid than my metallic textured tangle?
  • the hairs are REALLY nice, i like the texture a lot
  • the hairs also hold up a lot? i’ve already accidentally spilled a bit of lotion on them and i could just wipe it off without them getting stuck or gunky!

cons:

  • it came with gunk in between the tangle links.. :( i’m not sure if that’s bc i bought it irl and grabbed the first one i saw, like maybe it’d been there a while? but still ewww
  • i’d also be hesitant to de-hair it and make it a normal tangle as the tangle underneath seem to be damaged in some areas or have residue on them.
  • it doesn’t do.. the Thing. y’know how they come packaged? the Thing™ with the little handle? it does not do that, it sorta can but not the same as a non-hairy tangle :(

i will say that you can definitely clean between the links to get rid of the gunk i mentioned i did and it moves even better! it does take a bit of effort and there’s risk of the hairy par coming off as it IS seperate to the tangle underneath.

@ all my friends that struggle being vocal/verbal sometimes - I found these super cheap emotion wristbands.

They have two sides, one portraying that you’re OK and another that can highlight when you’re not okay. These aren’t the prettiest - but I think they can be helpful to highlight to those close to you how you’re feeling if you’re not able to speak at that moment in time.

They’re relatively subtle. You can easily have it flipped to the green side and it looks like a normal wristband with a little happy face.

I got them on EBay. From a fabulous seller that also has some incredibly affordable tangles for us in the UK and some other fun stim items.

 Here’s the seller if you’re interested: http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/jeanmcnally?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

For any followers from Adelaide (again) I spotted Tangle and official fidget cubes at the Imagine If (it's a toy store) in the Mitcham shops and Cr*zy Aaron's thinking putty at Games World (in Adelaide Arcade in the Mall, opposite the fountain).

Oh, wow! Thinking Putty in an offline store! Fabulous!

I had a look at Games World’s website, but it only lists stores in WA and Victoria in their store locator. Nor could I find a listing for thinking putty.

Here’s the store locator for Imagine If, because they have two storefronts Adelaide or SA stimmers might like to check out.

Thank you so much for your detailed descriptions of where to find things, Adelaide anon!

okay so as an adelaide stimmer - games world is eh at listing things on their site, tangles have never been on it even when they stocked them.

that said, i was at marion’s games world yesterday and did not see putty.

their fidgets may be a store-specific thing? i’m gonna be in the City tomorrow, i’ll happily ask where else putty is stocked :D

so! as a treat after a rather difficult combo of exam + oral presentation, I went looking for City Beach and their spinner rings today. results: one does not exist at Marion. I was told by the concierge that there was an affiliate store, which I went to. but alas, no spinner rings at said store. The super nice cashier at the affiliate store told me there wasn't even a city beach store in Adelaide B( it may be purely a western Australian thing? once I'm home proper I'll take a look at shipping via their website for you all o:

For any of your followers in Adelaide; I managed to find a tangle jr (the metallic, textured one) at the toyworld in Rundle Mall (in the Myer center) ($10), a knock-off fidget cube at the newsagents at the Mitcham Shopping Centre ($10) and a spinner ring at the Port Adelaide market ($2). I hope this helps someone!

Anon! What a fabulous stimmy haul! Oh, wow, a locally-sourced spinner ring - that’s absolutely fantastic! I had no idea that anyone here in Australia had them for sale at all, so I’ll have to keep my eyes out for those too, now!

did someone say irl spinner rings in adelaide /eyes emoji

i’ll keep an eye out - port adelaide’s a bit far from me, but now i know they’re in my state i can look!! it’d be great to find one, and have a brand name or something i could pass onto people :O

also a side note - games world at marion also has knock off fidget cubes for about $10! they seem alright for the price, tbh. they had spinners as well, both cheap-y ones and the metal ones - v expensive though.

You guys know that city beach sells spinner rings right? Yes I am an Aussie they are in the men’s jewelry section near the cash registers. @aestistic @stimtoybox

You can tell I am Victorian, because this is the first time I’ve heard of City Beach. (And their store locator gives me nothing in Victoria.)

But thank you so much for this, @gigi-meow, because, wow, they have some seriously cool spinner rings listed on their website!

Aussies who are not Victorian and are after spinner rings should check and see if there’s a store close to them. A source for rings you can check for fit in person is just fabulous!

(And tagging this post for the info on Games World, too. Thank you, @aestistic!)

/eyes emoji intensifies

city beach exists in SA!!  their store locator didn’t provide anything.. but they ARE at marion! i’d remembered walking past them, and westfield’s website says they have a store there :O i’ll double check to see, they may have closed, but i doubt it?

review incoming, muahaha. they have no idea what’s hitting them after uni on monday :3c

Hello everybody! I’m just going to jump right into this:

I’ve seen a lot of posts regarding the use of stim toys, such as spinner rings, amongst the use of neurotypicals (those who are not mentally ill, developmentally disabled, or otherwise neurodivergent). I have noticed an increase in the use of stim toys where I live; to my delight, 2 of the 3 people using them were also neurodivergent, which made me really happy because it was kind of a reminder that “Hey! There’s people like me in here!” Or something like that.

Now, I have also noticed a tendency of neurotypicals to buy and use stim toys, and I have absolutely no problem with that! It’s great, and it’s their decision, and I don’t need to know why they bought it, it’s all fine. That is, as long as they are being respectful and not using them as projectiles, or interrupting class (if they are in a school, which seems to be the focus of the topic that I have seen discussed on here) by messing around with their friends and showing them off or just goofing around.

What a lot of neurotypicals that buy those stim toys don’t realize is that, despite their name, they aren’t just toys for neurodivergent students. Students with ADD/ADHD, OCD, PTSD, Autistic students, those with anxiety disorders, use those objects to calm down and regulate their sensory intake. They are incredibly useful, and sometimes neccesary, tools to help those students.

When I was a little kid, I struggled horrendously with skin picking, head banging, and hair pulling. Everyone, my parents, my therapists, spent years trying to help me find alternative methods of stimming. In elementary and middle school, I was permitted to listen to music on my CD player (later my phone and kindle haha, times changed so quickly) to help me calm down. I had to have permission for earbuds and my music player to use them in the classroom. That step helped me so much, it was incredible. At home, my parents invested in a weighted blanket, which puts pressure on my body, which also helps with the needs I had filled before through stims that were harmful to myself.

That’s what I mean when I say that stim toys/devices aimed at assisting in stimming are vital tools for people like me. And sometimes, maybe we just need them to focus our energy on something, or we do it because we like the repetition, or just because it’s soothing: there are a million reasons for stimming, but they are especially important for neurodivergent people.

Now, do I really know in a group of people with stim toys which one is neurotypical? I don’t! But the people that buy stim toys know, and I know for a fact that they are becoming more “mainstream” and more neurotypicals are now using them along with neurodivergent people. I want to make this very clear: I think that is awesome, in many ways. I think it has the potential to help normalize stimming, however, that isn’t going to happen if people just ban them from schools because a group of kids decided to be immature and use theirs as playthings or projectiles to disrupt the entire class, rather than use them to stim.

I want stim toys to be normalized, but in order to do that, neurotypicals need to realize that these aren’t just accessories or fun little trinkets, not for the Autistic people, people with anxiety, OCD, ADD/ADHD, PTSD, or otherwise neurodivergent people using them. I want them to respect ALL forms of stimming, not just the ones deemed socially acceptable. That means not using your spinner ring and then pointing and laughing at an Autistic person using echolalia, or a person with anxiety rocking or chewing their hair, or cringing at a person with OCD picking/scratching their skin. These things are real too.

I don’t blame misbehaving kids for stim toys being banned in schools, but that sort of behavior and the school officials’ reactions to it are part of a much bigger issue. We need to all acknowledge, and help inform those who are not aware of the existence of stimming, that stim toys and other devices are vital tools for neurodivergent people, and also a unique and defining characteristic of our daily lives. That’s my take on the issue, anyways.

FYI, Build a Bear sold an A$ bear and shirt a few years ago. A$ still sells the bear.

Unfortunately, I can’t confirm this for people not Australian, because any attempt to view non-Australian sites redirects me to the Australian site.

I can tell you that the Australian site does not list the A$ bear, but even web listings may not reflect in-store stock.

I’ll be honest, anon: I’m not too surprised that stores sold the bear or even continue to sell the bear after ending their relationship with A$. Having worked in a retail environment on both the shop and the warehousing sides (sales assistant, picker, pick manager, stock management) I can tell you that companies often can’t afford to just throw out stock (even though the company’s support of A$ has changed). Nor can they afford to just return them to the warehouse. The hassle of sending the bears back to the warehouse is high enough that most aren’t going to bother with it when they can just continue to stock what remains of them and hope to sell them over time. The best option (for Build a Bear, not us) is to sell those bears, unfortunately.

(I used to work in an independent game shop, and we only sent back the barcodes from unsold copies of White Dwarf, a weekly magazine associated with Warhammer miniatures, for refund. Sending back the product itself wasn’t worth anyone’s time. We had other stock from another distributor that we drastically clearanced out for less than cost price after the distributor refunded us the cost price of the items because that was, truly, the easiest way to handle it. Once stock leaves the warehouse, distributors don’t want it back. From the warehouse side, it was a pain when boxes came back from stores, because we’d have to sort through it and scan it back onto the system in odd amounts - and unless you’re adding fifty or more items a shot, it’s not worth the cost of your labour.)

What I’m trying to say is that it isn’t awesome, at all, that the bear was or is still being sold, but I actually understand (from a retail perspective) why they have continued to do so, even though the better choice would have been to not sell the bear.

Like everything, it’s all down to your personal comfort level. Some of us aren’t going to want to buy from a vendor that had any prior connection to A$, and that’s fine. Some of us will give Build a Bear a second chance, and that’s fine, too. I just try to put forward as much info as I can, and I really appreciate, anon, that you all help me in doing so!

i.. was a naive child and bought one and got told it was going to Autism SA (as in the autism charity in South Australia) NOT a$. i imagine in the US it would most likely go to a$

they’re still blue and have the a$ lightbulb symbol i see on their advertising? it’s on one of their feet :/

i still have mine, which is where info on the bear comes from.. i tied a red ribbon on it for red instead, tho B))
