another Same Energy: so ive asked my family to refer to me as they/them bc im nb, and a few times ive corrected my cousins when theyve misgendered me. and so when my little cousins were playing superheroes, one of them said i could be supergirl, and my four year old cousin immediately pipes in with “but sams not a girl” and then, after a bit of thought, “you can be superthey!”

Can we take a moment to appreciate the contrapasso that Dabi has created for his father here? 

Contrapasso means “suffer the opposite” and most famously it’s used in Dante’s Inferno, where a sinner’s punishment reflects the crimes they committed in life. Very fitting what with Dabi asking his family to “look at him in the depths of hell.”

Endeavor spends all of the flashback ignoring his son’s suffering with the sole excuse that he can only “show him the world of a hero” and since Touya can’t be a hero with his quirk, there’s nothing he can do for his son. Endeavor refuses to fulfill his duties as a father, a husband. He chooses to be hero and a hero only. 

And after the years of pain, rejection, neglect and despair– What does Touya do? He becomes Dabi. A villain. He joined the LoV and gained as much infamy as he could before revealing his identity.

All so he could create a scenario where it is impossible for Endeavor to ignore him this time. Literally it is his job as a hero to fight the villains. He has to acknowledge Dabi and by extension the child he discarded, whether he likes it or not.

Reap what you sow indeed.
