🤪‼️🙏 for the OC most on your mind rn

Avatar

Well the last OCs I was thinking about were the Nicea crew (and how they should have more problems) so let's go with them:

🤪Do they have a “fun uncle” type family member?

  • Declan: not really.
  • Isabel: she does - one of her dad's brothers - but she stopped liking him when she stopped being able to swindle him out of candy and pocket change. She hasn't seen him since before high school, because she hasn't been back to her home planet since then.
  • Rodney: same as Isabel but he never liked the fun uncle to begin with. He was too loud and too much.
  • Tristan: she's had several, if "family" includes her mom's many girlfriends over the years. She'd also consider Von kind of a fun uncle, though more of the "grumpy but will let you drive the truck and sneaks you candy" kind.
  • Spinder: technically speaking, he is an uncle to the vast majority of his family. But his "fun uncle" has always been his second sister, Teagan, who is also Cady's mom. She's some 25 years older than him, but he and Cady are only five years apart, which meant that Teagan allowed them to be collectively a menace, but Spinder got to go home at the end of the day.
  • Cady: Spinder, his uncle who is younger than him. No contest.
  • Bo: also not really.

‼️What’s the most important part of having a “family” to them?

  • Declan: having people he can rely on, closely followed by not being for real alone.
  • Isabel: having someone who will stand by her no matter what. Which makes Rodney the most family family member she has.
  • Rodney: having people who will always need him, because he desperately needs to be needed.
  • Tristan: being in community with them, and especially sharing meals.
  • Spinder: his family is huge, so having an abundance of people to meet his social and emotional needs and engage with him about different interests, or in short: never being alone.
  • Cady: to be honest it's kind of a relief to have people who are supposed to like him, because he thinks he might kind of suck.
  • Bo: always having a place to return to, whenever they return.

🙏Are there things about their family they wish were different?

  • Declan: he wishes his moms weren't dead. But with the family he has living, he wishes that he knew how to talk to Teagan (his mother-in-law). He always feels so awkward with her, like she's kinda disappointed in him, and he doesn't want to give her any reason to be more disappointed in him.
  • Isabel: where does she even begin with them…she's concluded that things would be better for everyone if her and Rodney's parents had gotten divorced when she was about ten. Then she wouldn't have had to experience her dad doing transphobia with extra steps, her mom screaming at him all the time, Rodney becoming even more a nervous wreck, and becoming ride or die with him out of perceived necessity. But given what she has to work with now, she wishes Fay could just fucking chill out already and not always find some way to belittle her, whether intentional or not.
  • Rodney: could Fay and Isabel be okay please? And could someone tell him if his dad is still transphobic with extra steps or is he gonna have to go find out himself
  • Tristan: she wishes she knew more of her blood family. A good chunk of them still live on Antarac, and many of them around her hometown, but there a few branches of her family that are either all dead at this point or disappeared out into the galaxy, never to be heard from again. She wishes the family she does know could help her find the rest, even though they probably disappeared for a reason.
  • Spinder: in his immediate adoptive family (his third sister and her husband and kids) he wishes Michael hadn't been such a shit, because then he probably wouldn't have fallen out with Gwinnia for fighting with Michael. But he also has to acknowledge there wouldn't have been a fight if he hadn't engaged…either way he wishes he hadn't fallen out with Gwin, and also that he'd found some way to connect more with his now-deceased birth dad.
  • Cady: he can put up with just about any family nonsense, but god he wishes his dad hadn't died when he was a kid.
  • Bo: "we never get to see you anymore Rannebo" except after ten years of accidental exile they feel a lot more like their parents have a point.

🤗🎈🎳 for whoever you like?

Avatar

thank you!! i'm gonna do one character for each question because i'm rebellious like that

🤗Do they consider their partner’s family to be their family too?

Yu-Qi really didn't, at first. The concept of human-style families doesn't exist among her "family"—a collection of higher beings that can manifest others from sheer force of will. Siblings, parents, children, any familial title—to a God-Dragon, they're so similar as to be completely meaningless distinctions. Everyone just exists, with very little relation to each other. At the beginning of their relationship, she treats Xinya's family the same way she would treat any random stranger, and didn't see a problem with that. Once she learns human customs, though, she becomes a bit more gracious.

🎈Do they celebrate any extremely specific holidays that their family pretty much invented from scratch?

When Teconia still lived with her sister Seraph and their mother, they celebrated "the Wink." The planet they live on has two moons, that have different cycles, and when one moon is full and the other is new, it looks like winking eyes. They would go out into the woods at night and make a little campfire to eat and tell stories around. It's not an official holiday, but it made their lives a brighter after the death of her father.

🎳Are their friends welcome among their family? Only certain friends?

Henry, when he was young and/or poor enough to be living with his parents, was absolutely not allowed to bring any of his friends around. Whether his friends were bad influences or not was not something he cared to think about growing up, so... there may have been a reason for this rule!

😢Have they ever disappointed any member of their family?

😔Have any of their family members disappointed them?

🎖️What’s a time they felt extremely proud of their family?

Avatar

thank u!

gonna pull out a rare one from Unnamed Dream WIP, Cahaya, who is the crown prince of this fictional country and has like 7 siblings. PLENTY of family to discuss.

😢Have they ever disappointed any member of their family?

I like to describe Cahaya as your family's golden retriever. He is very loving and excited and happy to be here, but his intelligence isn't always present. He's prone to making very impulsive decisions if he thinks they'll be fun or exciting—he's an adrenaline junkie, basically, but doesn't always fully comprehend when he's in danger?

All this to say, there have been plenty of embarrassing mishaps the royal family has had to cover his ass about that leave the extremely long dining room table very cold for a few meals.

😔Have any of their family members disappointed them?

Cahaya is not as committed as his family to the concept of "the hierarchy of cousins" and is upset that they try to enforce it.

Basically, in this place the dominant religion posits that all of humanity is related to the Divine Family, and as such every human on the planet is your cousin. You refer to people you don't know personally as "cousin" and it's normal to refer to humanity in general as your cousins. Rich people decided that they didn't like being related to The Poors and decided they were "first" cousins, and everyone else was "second/third" cousins based on how poor they were. This obviously sucks, it's basically arguing that poor people are farther from humanity than rich people.

As much as Cahaya thinks this is bullshit, and as much as his family has agreed that it sucks, they continue to reinforce the idea anyway. It's the one thing he'll always take seriously.

🎖️What’s a time they felt extremely proud of their family?

Cahaya is very proud of his youngest sister, pretty much constantly, because she isn't afraid to run around making a mess of the palace with him. They are a terror together.

The Seal and the Ravens

OC INTRODUCTION - Chessa

The old fairy's turn coming next, her head shaking more with spite than with age, she said that the Princess should pierce her hand with a spindle and die of the wound. This terrible gift made the whole company tremble, and everybody fell a-crying.  At this very instant the young fairy came from behind the curtains and said these words in a loud voice, "Assure yourselves, O King and Queen, that your daughter shall not die of this disaster. It is true, I have no power to undo entirely what my elder has done. The Princess shall indeed pierce her hand with a spindle; but, instead of dying, she shall only fall into a deep sleep, which shall last a hundred years, at the end of which a king's son shall come and awake her."

(Above is from the original tale and not written by me)

Chessa lies in the ruins of a castle, on an island in the centre of the Sleeping Lake surrounded by thorns. Where she came from is unknown; some say she’s been dead for years, not sleeping. Others say it’s simply a legend to keep frightened sailors away form the isle of briars. But in the castle Chessa lies, waiting to be woken.

Make The Word Tag

tagged by @void-botanist, thank you!

Rules: Using the 3 random words given to you, you have to write a scene either using all 3 words in one scene OR write three separate scenes using each word separately.

Sicne this got a little long, I'll tag everyone right up top.

Your words are: organ, jump, cold

My words were: volcano, heaven, and means, and I wrote the following scene(s) for P&J!

The awkward silence grew exceptionally long. Pride stared at a stain on the wall, pretending to wonder where it came from. He didn’t know why he was still sitting there, listening to Justice sniffle into a tissue an arm’s length away, but couldn’t force his body to move. All his muscles clenched, waiting in suspense for permission to slink off the couch and forget this ever happened.

“Thank you,” Justice suddenly mumbled.

Pride almost jumped. “For what?”

“For listening, I guess.” He crumpled the used tissue in his fist, staring down at it with a wet smile. “I can’t really talk to humans about this, so.”

“You probably could. Just don’t say you’re homesick for Heaven. Let people fill in the rest themselves.”

Justice scrunched his nose. “I don’t know, I’m not a good liar.”

“It’s not lying, technically.”

“Sure, but it feels better to be able to tell the truth.” He gestured between them, the empty cushion on the couch even more exaggerated. “To talk to someone who gets it.”

“I don’t.”

Pride’s mouth answered so quickly he didn’t have time to think about what it said. Justice blinked his puffy eyes, taken-aback.

“What… do you mean?” he ventured.

“I’m not homesick,” Pride said. “I don’t miss anywhere, really.”

“You don’t?”

“Nope.”

“You don’t miss anyone?”

Pride snorted. Justice would never know how funny that question was. “Abso-fucking-lutely not. Hell sucked ass and I’m glad I’ll never be able to go back.”

“Oh.”

Justice sat back on the couch, confusion overtaking the homesickness that Pride discovered mere minutes ago. The longer he sat there, eyes far away in thought, the more a suspicion grew in Pride’s mind. A suspicion that seemed completely ridiculous.

“You don’t think demons actually like it in Hell,” he said, “do you?”

😡😇💪for the family asks!

😡 dumbest sibling argument

😇 fondest memory with siblings

💪 do they identify strongly with any family terms

I’ll do this with both the leads of my current wip, The Great Red Dragon.

Hugo:

There’s definitely been some petty disagreements among Hugo and his siblings. The stupidest one would be when he was ten and one of his sisters told him Star Trek was a dumb show and he didn’t speak to her for a week.

His fondest memory is when his late brother took him to a sci fi convention in DC when he was 15 for the weekend. It was a fun trip up from their home in southern Virginia.

Hugo definitely identifies strongly with little brother and Uncle Hugo. He’s the youngest of ten siblings. Most of his sisters are much older than him and a lot of them have kids. His oldest sister has two kids older than him. Being part of a large southern family meant he had specific roles he was taking on from a young age.

Sveta:

Sveta and her brother are very close because it’s just the two of them. They don’t tend to fight anymore. But their stupidest fight as kids was when they argued over whether all girls were innately better at math and science. She claimed they must be because she always excelled in those subjects.

Her fondest memories with her brother are summers spent at their grandparents’ dacha. It was much warmer there than the arctic town they lived in.

Sveta definitely identifies with daughter and older sister. She’s very responsible and practical and feels a strong sense of obligation to her family, more so since immigrating to the US in 1980.

🪢🤐🏆for the family asks!

Avatar

Thanks for asking! You can find more answers about these two on my (poor neglected) writing side blog @thatswhereiwanttobe

🪢 How did they bond with their parents growing up? Do they still bond the same way?

🤐 Are they keeping any family secrets?

🏆 Is their family well known? For good or bad reasons?

This is going to pertain to Hugo Emery and Sveta Volkova, the two leads of my current wip The Great Red Dragon.

Hugo:

He didn’t bond with his parents at all really. He was mostly raised by his older siblings. His parents were there as the heads of the household but his siblings did all the work.

He is keeping family secrets and not for lack of trying to blab. the things his parents are involved in sound so wild and their public image is so squeaky clean that nobody believes him. He does testify against his dad in federal court in a case involving multiple fraud charges. But the cult is something he has to work to prove and work to stop from getting worse on his own.

Hugo’s parents are famous televangelists and Christian media moguls. They’re very wealthy and have built a network of Christian entertainment companies kind of like the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker of this story. They’re seen as good wholesome down to earth people who love God, their country, and their big southern family. Critics of evangelical Christianity, left leaning political figures, and the IRS all know the Emerys for less scrupulous reasons. Their Virginia megachurch was found to be laundering money, they lobbied against abortion and birth control, and held huge revival events where people were promised things like healing cancer. It’s quite the marvel Hugo didn’t turn out anything like that.

Sveta:

She bonded with her mother through her achievements. Coming from a modest background, her mother showed love by trying to push her to be the best version of herself, which often meant being special in some way. Her mother died only months before the start of the story, so she no longer has that bond with her mother but she does find it hard to get rid of the need to be accomplished at everything. Her father wasn’t very emotionally present for her and her brother, as was unfortunately common for Soviet families at the time, so she never really had much of a bond with him.

She isn’t keeping any family secrets. She doesn’t really know any. She’s pretty open about what living in the USSR was like for her, having left when she was 21. Her family background likely would have things in it that aren’t really known to her as her grandfather fought in WWI and the Russian Civil War. He died when she was nine and she never knew him well.

Her family is not well known. Her grandfather was respected in his community while he was alive for being a veteran of the Red Army, but that’s pretty much it. Sveta’s parents were not anyone notable.

🚼🛝💝💔 for whichever siblings in tcol are the most chaotic

Avatar

honestly this is a very good question, who are the most chaotic? i have a habit of making ridiculous and defunct sibling relationships, and many of the tcol characters have siblings... but i think i'll stick to the ones i know the absolute most about (relatively), the brightendales which are mc clear (26) and his two siblings vanity (23), pure (14) who are those ages at the start of book 1 lol.

🚼How many siblings did they grow up with, if any?

clear technically Really only grew up with vanity, as the two of them are closer in age than pure who was had as a sort of "make up child" by his parents. to explain, clear has been pressured from a young age by his parents to be a dark hunter--and he's literally the Best one who's ever lived (because of his unique make up). however, the horrors and trauma that he experienced growing up severely stunted him and alienated him from his sister, especially because his father wasn't concerned with being yknow. a good parent. so he ostracized vanity for not being as good as her brother (also he never wanted a daughter so that's a whole other can of worms). vanity looked up to her older brother though; not in the same way that pure will eventually, but she always admired how despite the hardships he always tried to put on a brave face for her and their mother. vanity was always a quieter child, so she and clear never like. Talked extensively and she couldn't understand what he was going through, but when he was eventually kicked out of the home for wanting to stop being a dark hunter/being gay/etc at 17, 14yo vanity vowed that she would find him one day.

after kicking clear out, all of their father's intentions kind of projected onto pure, who grew up knowing that his elder brother was extremely talented and skilled but he threw it all away, and like thier father, pure grew to resent clear. he especially hated how vanity's loyalties seemed to lie with this brother that even she admitted she hardly spoke with while he was around, and hated how despite it all, pure couldn't seem to master his same accomplishments. pure is like if san's family life was nuclear tbh. and this resentment is one of pure's character arcs in book 2 lol.

🛝Did they get along with their sibling(s) in childhood? Do they now?

vanity and clear were distant, but they do eventually come closer when vanity decides to go to guilds in hopes of finding and rekindling her relationship with clear. pure and vanity were always at each others throats because pure thought (by way of their father's thought) that he was better than vanity, even though in reality vanity is far beyond pure in skill as a hunter. pure has definitely suffered the brunt of alienation by their father's manipulation and hates both of his siblings, but clear especially for having the gall to be good at everything he wants to be but throwing it away to be something so "stupid" as a healer tm. it'll take a Long Time for pure to be on cordial speaking terms with either his sister or clear. despite this however, clear doesn't have much of an opinion towards pure, because he rarely saw him and then was kicked out pretty early on in pure's life so there's almost no connection there. pure DOES trigger clear's ptsd when they do meet for the first time because he is a near carbon copy of their father in looks and attitude.

💝What do they like most about having sibling(s)? / 💔What do they dislike the most about having sibling(s)?

clear is pretty neutral about having siblings because of his trauma he was barely in their lives. he doesn't really have anything he likes and dislikes because he barely knows either of them. but when he and vanity do reunite, he does enjoy that she validates the abuse that he suffered because for SO LONG he just assumed he wasn't good enough for not being able to handle it. he mostly would say he dislikes that more people had to be subjected to his terrible upbringing so that's why he isn't like. thrilled about the idea of having siblings, but its not their fault.

vanity wishes that the relationship with her siblings was overall better and has gained the wisdom to understand who's at fault for that (their father for being an abusive asshole and their mother for p much checking out of the relationship and letting it happen). she liked the fleeting times at home where she got along with either of her brothers and the fun things they could do together, such as the few times clear was home (before he was kicked out) how he would take her into the forests near their home just so they could relax. or, how as a child, pure was very sweet and wanted to cling to her all the time before he was (essentially) corrupted. she dislikes how entitled and stuck up pure is and how she is generally speaking the forgotten and underloved middle child.

pure hates his siblings for his entire conscious memory so there isn't anything he likes about them. he hates how he knows deep down, that both vanity and clear are more skilled than he is, and despite being their father's golden child, he would never earn their father's true love and respect because all he was using pure for was a replacement for clear's prestige and pure can't even begin to hold a candle to that. again, its san but worse with him.

It's important, especially for beginner writers, but to remind those who have been writing long term as well, that your writing, your stories, your characters and plots, they cannot be all encompassing, they simply cannot address every issue we individually and collectively face in the world today. They cannot completely and flawlessly represent every single person's lived experience in absolute depth and nuance, and that's normal, that's okay! What's important is for you to lean into the story you want to tell and the experiences and passions (themes, opinions, hobbies even) you want to share and explore, and make every effort to tell those things to the best of your ability — and tell a bloody good tale while you're at it 💕

You too? Absolutely. You keep going and I'll keep going too.

I’m writing right now too and struggling a little, but I’ll keep going along with you two

Every time this post comes up on my dash i feel so fucking called out.

I dug up an old WIP yesterday and read through the entire thing, it was some 180 pages of an original story and I actually really fucking liked it??

[Of course, it was still transcendentally weird. On one hand there was a painfully beautifully scene where the trans boy comes out his crush and is worried he'll be rejected. On the other hand I discovered lines that i just. Who let me write them. Said crush, Rian, walked up to Avi who was getting flirted with by a bunch of people while preparing soil. And he just fucking says "I thought we were supposed to be using shovels for gardening, I see Avi's using hoes instead." Ngk????!!!!! 😭]

BUT WHO'S GOING TO WRITE THE REST OF IT? ME???? THIS IS HOMOPHOBIA.

Someone encourage me to write please so that my two idiot gays can have their enemies to lovers happily ever after and I can sit and be stupid with them.

WE CAN DO IT EVERYONE WRITE. IT MAY NOT LOOK GOOD TO YOU. IT DOESN'T MATTER. THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO DO TO BE A WRITER IS, WELL. WRITE.

Alright you know what? Today's the day I drag that WIP out from its dusty little hole and write. I'll set a timer for an hour and just fucking do it.

For the record, that thing I was writing last week that I was convinced was the worst thing in the world...? I kept going. I finished it. I revised it. I sent it in. Everybody loves it so much. Even me.

if you've never engaged with a creative art on a regular basis you need to understand that it requires concerted effort to get into "the groove" to make something and every second that it takes to get into that groove causes physical pain, but the only thing worse than doing it is not doing it.
