————      at the price of your own happiness.      ”      she finishes ,   rather unkindly.    but ,   is that entirely fair ?   certainly not ,   and evelyn knows it.  impossible choices are made always by women ,   every moment of every day ,   in ways no man could ever hope to know.   but they weigh more so on the shoulders of mothers.   selfish choices can no longer be made ,   for one’s self is always put on the back burner.   or should be.   she’s a  GOOD  MOTHER.   but ,   evelyn resents it.      “      how better could her life be when her own mother is half miserable and half pretending ?      ”

HER  EXPRESSION  SOFTENS ,   hands reaching for her sister’s.      “      leave him ,   claire.   you’re whole on your own ,   and she’ll come to understand in time.   you can’t keep living like this ,   with a man who doesn’t even respect you.   and ,   with everything you’ve achieved ,  it’s  ——————   it’s  …  you deserve more than this.

IT HAS BEEN GOING AS WELL      as could be expected. Their letters had taken on a clinical element, field reports lacking the emotion Claire had poured into every word during the war. It became apparent very early on that certain elements of who she was could not continue if she were to survive in this new world of suppression. The mask she wear has been carefully constructed -- and takes mere seconds to dissolve once she notes the shift in tone from her sister. Claire’s eyes widen though she can not allow any HOPE to bleed through. Not yet.       ❝     He told me he’ll be working late for the week.      ❞      A lie that allows her a brief respite in playing housewife is one she is thankful for.      ❝     What are you sorry for, Evelyn?
