nur Bahnhof verstehen

literally: to understand nothing but train station

to understand nothing or not wanting to understand anything

Origin: The phrase has its origins in the First World War, when soldiers, tired from years of trench warfare, only wanted to hear the word “train station,” which for them was synonymous with a journey home.

Me when I spoke nur ein bisschen Deutsch to them and they started speaking viel Deutsch to me with a Rhinelandic accent

Story of my life during my trip around Cologne earlier this year

Bf and I: *visited a non-touristic cozy German village, ate at the local döner restaurant and even got allowed into "Duzen" territory when speaking German with a local villager* we are travelers, not tourists 🌍

Update: I agree with @brandinotbroke regarding Döner quality decrease: today I ate a falafel pita bread at a Kingsday festival in Rotterdam and I preferred that over the Döner lunchroom in a non-touristic cozy village in Germany

German Veronaville redux: Via Veronaville 26

When I create my OC household Tellier (formerly Taylor) 19 years ago, I picked Via Veronaville 26 to let them live in. 3 years ago, I recreated them in a clean version of Veronaville by @simstate.

Building a half-hipped roof shape generally looks wonky in The Sims 2 because it doesn't have a feature to make such kinds of roof shapes. And so far I know, it's not possible to mod new roof shapes.

For comparison, this is how the orignal Via Veronaville 26 looks like in a vanilla Sims 2 game.

Left picture: made by me during my hike in Oberbergischer Kreis (NRW, nearby Cologne) | right picture: from Wikipedia, taken somewhere in the BaWü state

I actually wanted to create a roof construction like this, but that didn't play well with the restricted roofing styles in The Sims 2 due to clipping and glitchy looks, so I moved the intersectional roof to the center.

I come down to the conclusion that Bergisches Land (especially the Oberbergischer Kreis, nearby Cologne) in Nordrhein-Westfalen is the best reference for my German Veronaville redux regarding types of old houses and the architectural planning 😃. The half-timbered houses in that area were often built as detached houses, sometimes with big yards, which remind me a lot of the vanilla Tudor lots of Veronaville.

Pictured: random houses when I googled for "Bergisches Haus"

My German Veronaville redux builds: Capp Mansion

I got my inspiration from a couple of Herrenhäuser in Hessen ⬇️

Keudensches Schloß in Wanfried, Hessen

Herrenhaus Berßel in Osterwieck-Berßel (Hessen)

For reference: the original English-Tudor style Capp mansion in The Sims 2

But during my recent trip in Germany, I realized I want to use this house as a reference as well for the Capp mansion, regarding roof layout

And a yard like this (picture source: Wikipedia)
