When I'm with acquaintances, I feel like fog, like if I just stay hazy enough, unobtrusive enough, if I fill any container I'm presented, then I might do something right.

When I'm alone, I feel like I could fly away into the sky, and it could be beautiful or freezing or lung-air-stealing, but it would still all be like staring up with nothing earth-solid in my view, just dizzying blue, or black and glitter.

When I'm with my friends, it's as if I've condensed into liquid. I know I could splash and make a mess and it would be okay.

After the world finished tumbling and crashing around him, Xie Lian blinked his eyes open to dust settling in the dim light. He heaved in a breath and froze, vision whiting out from pain. Xie Lian reached down with one hand to feel for the injury.

Ah. There in his abdomen was a large metal rod. No wonder breathing was so painful. Every movement of his lungs shifted his muscles around the pole. Blood dribbled out, but thankfully most of it was stunted by the rod itself.

Xie Lian’s fingers slipped messily around the wound as he assessed it. He groaned softly when he had to twist his arm under him to feel his back— Yes, it seemed to have gone straight through his abdomen.

Xie Lian closed his eyes, trying to get control of the pain. When he opened his eyes he called out, “San Lang?” The building had collapsed so suddenly he hadn’t had the chance to brace himself or grab onto Hua Cheng. Luckily they’d been standing next to each other, so it was likely that Hua Cheng wasn’t too far away.

Sure enough, there was a soft moan and then Hua Cheng’s voice called back frantically. “Gege! Gege are you hurt?”

“Just a little,” Xie Lian said. He looked around him, trying to locate Hua Cheng’s voice. It sounded close.
