this is true of pretty much all internal anatomy, because the real situation is sort of like if you stuffed a bunch of water balloons of different shapes, connected by tubes, into a bag, itd be really hard to tell whats going on! so you make things more orderly when you represent them, and the connections and lengths and stuff are correct. like the former image is what you get if you cut it out of someone's body and arrange it neatly (and also, if their system wasnt aberrant somehow, but most people's bodies are aberrant somehow. so what they show you is more of like an average of everyone's weird aberrations)

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.

A brief moment of rationality from the bird place.

A crazy theory just coalesced about Star Trek holodecks. Why does every ship have them? Why are they some of the last things to go down, if they need so much power and are purely recreational? Why do they malfunction so often? I submit to you that holodecks essentially fulfill the function of a top-end graphics card on modern-day PCs. Yes, they run games for pleasure. But also they are very good for running a bunch of complex calculations, especially involving the simulation of space and laws of physics. And this has a bunch of utility uses. Y'know how graphics cards are used for stuff like protein folding or, more annoyingly, bitcoin mining? This, but in Star Trek.

So here's my little bit of crazy world building: holodecks function as reserve processing units. In normal operation, they handle scientific sims, like we often see in the shows (and a bit of fun for the crew). But in combat, they handle some of the heavy-duty calculations for things like autofiring beam banks or shield redistribution, which is why people don't usually redistribute power from them immediately. Your holodecks go down, you do a lot more by hand. And sometimes you get edge scenarios such as storing physical bodies in their RAM. Most crews fiddle with and overclock theirs, which is why there are so many bugs. But everyone swears by them anyway.

The old school lack of transparency on tumblr is amazing because you assume the people you follow must all be equivalent to you and then you see someone write “I brought my youngest to college today” and someone else write “my mom wouldn’t let me listen to Ariana Grande when I was a kid” and then your head explodes

and we need that! keeps us humble.

honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.

the problem with having a decade old tumblr blog is that there are posts on it from a decade ago
