obviously i haven’t been here, but i’m just popping in to acknowledge the passing of the wonderful ivan reitman. as a ghost.busters fan, i’m heartbroken. as a canadian, doubly so - he was one of the greats. death is but a door, time is but a window. <3

waves. hi i had a nervous breakdown last weekend and needed to not write my most neurotic character until i was chill again. i am mostly chill again. drafts and stuff to come.

“ these should be sufficient. ” the basket he carries is laden with every toy he’d been able to find - educational, sure, with the occasional plastic doll tossed in at the behest of the associate who had been helping him. she had been nice enough, but had cast strange sidelong glances at him when he lingered and ruminated over which abacus would be the most intellectually stimulating for callie to play with. three weeks old, and he’s already thinking towards the future. egon looks down at the basket, then back to the wall in front of him, hesitantly selecting a stuffed rabbit from the shelf and turning it over in his hands. soft, no choking hazards, but sufficiently cuddly. she ought to be pleased with it. “ what do you think? ” he asks, turning to the individual in the aisle beside him, “ fitting for a one month old girl? ”    /    open !!!

heading to a little zoom lecture about Groundhog Day and then i should be here to get some things done

today on ‘mot uses their psych degree’: an explanation as to why egon tries to drill a hole into his head in college!

it’s called trepanation! it was a precursor to what we know as lobotomy, dating back to the middle ages and possibly earlier. it was originally used for relieving pressure on the brain from things like hematoma and brain lesions by removing a small segment of skull, but in the 50s/60s some doctors and psychiatrists reasoned (still unproven) that it would be helpful for increasing cerebral metabolic rates and thereby increasing the brain’s energy output/capacity/function. there are several accounts of individuals documenting their attempts at self-trepanation and the outcomes, so it stands to reason that egon absolutely read these accounts and wanted to try it out for himself, human guinea pig style. ~the more u know~

addendum: there’s also been some suppositions that trepanation helps with psychiatric concerns like depression and anxiety, but this has never been proven - the sad alternative of this little meta is that egon does it to alleviate his anxiety, but i will spare you that avenue of meta today
