honestly damen threatening to kill the regent the second he realised what he did to laurent and violating his own country’s ancient and sacrosanct customs without a second thought is his MOST iconic action in the whole series, damen outchea once again setting the bar dizzyingly high!!!

just an extension of this but it is so important that damen is written in this way. there is never even the barest second of doubt or blame from damen when the regent tells him what happened between him and laurent and you know damn well that both the regent and laurent were expecting that. laurent was 100% expecting disgust, revulsion, blame, whatever but damen just jumps to defend him!!! because he’s been fucking hurt!!! he even yells at the guards at the kingsmeet for not fucking up the regent as well for what he’s done! when there’s so much shame and stigma around victims of csa do u even know how important it is that damen does not even consider for one second that laurent is at fault? even though the regent explicitly pursues that narrative? that laurent was asking for it and is dirty and corrupted and of less worth? we have damen’s pov we know this isn’t something that even occurred to him or that he would accept? even though this is what laurent believes? because he loves laurent unequivocally? do u realise how fucking important that is??? WE STAN KINGS ONLY

I'm laughing at the idea of Nik ranting about his Veretian conspiracy theories for years and no one, not even Theomedes, taking him seriously. Laurent should tell him about the bribes, he'd be furious

“That was definitely the intention with the first book was to create a place from which you yearn to escape, and not just for the protagonist, Damen, who’s literally captured and held there, but also, on re-read or in retrospect, Laurent as well. For him, it’s kind of like ground-zero for his own kind of darkness that he’s experienced. I feel like in some ways that court is like a metaphor for being trapped in an unhealthy relationship or space or being trapped in your own past, or just any one of those really violent dynamics that one can find oneself in. And so the further you move away from those dynamics in life, emotionally, the healthier you become. And the court sort of functions like that. The further they literally, physically move away from it, the more space there is for healthier dynamics - for both of them to grow as characters and people.”
