We will not calm down.

I said it after episode 3, and I will say it again. History is being made.

No, we will not calm down. We will not stop posting about Yuri on Ice. We will not silence ourselves because you are “annoyed” by its popularity, because you are not “mainstream,” because you are not this, not that.

This isn’t about you

This is about so much more. It is rare that an anime is so important and so impactful. Most of the time, anime hype is because a series is either so weird and outrageous that we are just shocked, or just because it is simply really good and entertaining and people enjoy it.

But what all of the complainers out there seem to be missing is what Yuri on Ice means to so, so many people. We experienced the first sports anime to have canonical, queer male protagonists kiss on screen in episode 7 (emphasis on sports as to not disregard other series with canonically queer protagonists. Emphasis on protagonists as to not disregard series with canonical queer relationships between side characters, whether in sports anime or otherwise).

The kiss was a huge success, but this week was an even bigger win.

Now, we have possibly gotten the first anime ever to feature queer male protagonists become engaged (however I could be wrong; but I am consciously disregarding Kyo Kara Maoh. I love that series but their engagement was supposed to be for comedic effect, as it was accidental. It becomes much more legitimate as the series progresses, but the initial engagement is unintentional).

In just 10 episodes so far, Yuri on Ice has displayed a loving, healthy relationship between two adult men, not to mention that one is a Japanese man and the other is Russian. Not once has their relationship been ridiculed or demeaned. Not once have they been played off as anything less than two people, utterly head over heels for each other.

There is so much to Yuri on Ice- so much- that it is impossible for me to write about in one post, in one sitting, and for me to even comprehend at a moment’s notice. But to me, personally, Victor and Yuuri’s relationship is the most important. To me- someone who has always, always searched for quality representative media- this means the world. This sets the bar so high now and the series isn’t even over (nor do I believe it is even close to finishing, not after its success and the creator’s desires for a sequel of some sort).

For me, someone within the LGBT+ community, to see a healthy and very real same-sex relationship so beautifully and realistically conveyed and celebrated is astounding.

And I hope this is a huge “told you so” to all of the creators of media who thought, “Our series will not sell well if we make our main characters explicitly queer, because no one wants to see that.” I hope they look at the success of Yuri on Ice and decide to create more queer media. Even if their motivation is financial, I’m positive that Yuri on Ice is a step forward. Japan (and especially anime) has much farther to go, certainly. There are flaws within Yuri on Ice and criticisms that are quite legitimate and understandable. I understand that.

But look at the good things that this series does have to offer. To see Yuuri slide a ring onto Victor’s finger, and for Victor to do the same… to see Phichit congratulate them on their marriage, then promptly announce it to the entire restaurant… and to see so many small but significant indicators of their mutual love (and all of this is simply episode 10 alone)…

That’s pretty incredible. And man, does validation feel great

Love Wins.

Protests erupt throughout the nation after news of Donald Trump presidency breaks.

Amazing to see the power the human race has, that we are smart and that we can fight for our rights and for eachother. I hope everyone stays strong for the years to come, we are all beside you.

I am grieving. I am sick. I am horrified. Last night, I wept, and my whole heart hurt, and it won’t stop pounding now, in terror. I am terrified. I can’t think, and I can barely write, but I needed to write something, because that’s who I am.

I have only once before in my entire life felt this level of despair, and that was sitting in a hospital room watching someone I loved finally succumbing to cancer. And even then I knew they were finally at peace.

We won’t have that luxury.

I live in a country that has just announced, for all intents and purposes, that I am worthless. Many of my friends and family feel the same. We don’t understand how this happened. How could this happen?

We will not have the luxury of peace. This will be a long, dark, hard four years. This will be a war we fight. But we have to fight it, for each other.

This doesn’t mean anger, or bloodshed, or hate. We have too much of that. We have to fight in all the ways they never think of, with their limited imaginations, their stunted, fragile egos and minds.

You fight it, when they tell you you mean nothing, when they say your words don’t matter and who you are is wrong.

Fight it, when they laugh at you, at the things you believe in.

Fight with respect, with love, with hope, even if it feels like they are so, so hard to find sometimes.

Fight, because there will be others alongside you. Fight, because you have seen the measures they resort to, to keep you down.

But you keep rising back up. They can’t ground you. They can’t silence us.

Look out for each other. Live for yourself. Remember what it is you love, and why you love it.

But above all: don’t stop fighting.

Because we can’t afford to lose here.

I'm so scared for you all. Please do what you can to stay safe, don't give up. The world has come so far recently, especially you America. Keep fighting for your rights and for your freedom.

  • Schizophrenia: patients usually have less brain tissue
  • Major Depression: scans show less brain activity in depressed brain
  • Alzheimer’s: brain tissue significantly shrinks, hippocampus is usually the first region to go
  • ADHD: less brain activity in the frontal cortex (area associated with decision making)
  • OCD: high brain activity
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): hippocampal volume reduction (area involved in memory) and increased activation of the amygdala (area involved in emotional responses)

This is so important! I usually don’t reblog posts but people need to understand that mental illnesses are NO CHOICE! You cannot get over it, or snap with your fingers and just be okay again. It takes constant fixing and a lot of strength to get out of this. So to everyone who judges people with mental disorders: people don’t get a choice to develop a disorder or not, but being stupid and telling them to get over it is a choice. PLEASE DONT JUDGE THINGS UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND!

i wanna shove these in my mom’s face every time she says “just push through it”

Going to start sending this to people.

stop making illnesses a trend (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Yes, Yuri on Ice is actually as gay as you think.

I need to say something to the skeptics out there, the ones who are annoyed with YoI, the ones who believe it’s yaoi trash.

Yuri on Ice is quite literally revolutionary so far. It is a big deal. We’re not screaming over some spineless fanservice or some homoerotic subtext. You’ve probably seen the screenshots and gifs out of context and thought, ‘wow, that looks pretty gay.’

No, you do not understand. It is gay

This is an anime that is not labeled as yaoi- meaning, it is not basic, heteronormative fanservice intended for women with problematic themes. It is not shounen-ai, where it simply teases the watcher for hints of homosexuality but never actually goes through with any of it.

Of course, there is fanservice- butt shots, body shots, what have you- that is skillfully placed in with the rest of the story.

But so far, this show is not queerbaiting.

So far, only three episodes in, Yuri on Ice has been smashing anime stereotypes one after another.

This is unlike we’ve seen in Sports anime. This is almost comparable to No. 6; an anime with a solid, well-done plot that so happens to have a gay romance rather than a straight one. However, Yuri on Ice isn’t just that. There is no doubt this show is one about sexual awakening. That much was painfully clear throughout episode 3.

Not only is it unique that this show is about sexual awakening, but it is between two men. It is very real, very blatant, and not made fun of. It is not a joke. It is not a facade to draw the fangirls in. This is real.

The amount of proof for this is outstanding. The ending song is a great example, from the lyrics to the pictures shown.

‘You’re so beautiful tonight I was simply entranced Even the hourglass was C’mon and take my breath away’  And, as pointed out in previous posts, the act of combing one’s hair is an intimate act between lovers in Japan. That was focused on in the ending sequence of instagram posts.

In episode 3 alone, there was the significant dialogue of Yuri as he skated about how he found his eros in embracing his femininity. That was not made fun of in any way- it was accepted as the right thing, and Yuri felt more comfortable being ‘the woman seducing the playboy,’ the playboy being Victor. If you had any doubt about who the playboy was, Victor’s whistle was a skillful and clever way to give that away all too obviously.

If you haven’t watched Yuri on Ice yet because you believe it’s all fanservice, because you think it is like Free, or Hibike! Euphonium- you are wrong. Both of those shows, while absolutely beautiful and I personally enjoy them both, are constantly skirting around homosexuality. They do everything to imply romantic attraction, but do not actually take the next step. They tease, but don’t give. And this show is not like Haikyuu or any other sports anime, where you can easily see the bonds in the show as platonic or romantic (depending on how you want to think about it).

No, this show is gay, whether you like it or not. You can deny many anime of being gay, as being something only the fangirls are seeing for their shipping desires, but you cannot deny this one.

This is representation, and by god, I hope this show continues to do what it’s doing. If nothing comes of Victor and Yuri’s relationship, this show will still make history as the biggest queerbaiting flop ever seen. And, if it continues to do as amazingly as it is, by god will it be hard to beat.
