the culture vulture. Since 1983.

Lots of Star Wars OT & PT, figure skating, and other odd things. And writing. 1983 refers to nothing but the CV label!

Thanks! @tansyuduri 😊 honestly lately the only thing I've had stuck in my head is the main title song from merlin 🤣 because the nephew and I keep humming it aggressively at each other. So does that count? Besides that, the oompa loompa song lives in my head basically...lol my answers are lame 🤣 but it's true. Ya just caught me at a time that I haven't any others stucknin my head. Lol

Tagging @90soldsoul and whoever else wants to do this haha

Rare behind the scenes footage of “Return of the Jedi” 🎬🎥

Mark explains that he’d be finished with something before lunch 😆. I’m not sure what that is. Also, if anyone knows where to find more of this “behind the scenes” ROTJ stuff because I only managed to find this clip. I’ve seen others on YouTube but not this particular one so I’m wondering if a full version is somewhere. 🤔

ETA July 2023 - the original article is sadly long gone. There is some great meta in the reblogs though!

I managed to find the original post via the Wayback Machine, so anyone interested can still read it!

(The full article is mainly a defense of the Prequels and Lucas’ filmmaking approach, which ends with an explanation as to why TFA was the complete antithesis to Lucas’ films.)

“All of Star Wars is pastiche. What it never was before was derivative of itself. Every new Star Wars episode was drastically different than the ones that preceded it. That’s why all of them after the first—including Empire, despite revisionist history—have initially been met with a lot of resistance and negative reviews. They weren’t what people expected. The Force Awakens is the exact opposite of that.”

The Doctor and The Master implies a third, less prestigious renegade timelord named The Bachelor

An immortal who regenerates into new bodies but maintains the same core identity and continuity of memories even if there are marked changes in personality, you say?

Weirdly fixated on England, you say?

The Bachelor, you say?

May I propose a theory:

I know "60s housewives who invented slash fanfiction" has taken on a life of its own as a phrase, but Kirk/Spock didn't really exist until the 70s and THOSE WOMEN HAD JOBS. They were teachers and librarians and bookkeepers and scientists and they damn well spent their own money going to conventions, printing zines, buying fanart and making fandom happen. Put some respect on their names.

Salute to our troops (70s careerwomen who put their hard-earned dollars into homemade gay erotica)

@culturevulture73 I think you're younger than the women being discussed here. But that era in the 70's is when you would have been getting into fandom. And with all you do for fandom history, I thought you should see this.

Thank you @qualitymoonsuit for thinking of me - yes on all counts! I don't know how much I do for fandom history, I need to do more!

There is a fantastic book called Star Trek Lives! that I bought in 1975 that really talks about how Trek fandom evolved - it talks about the letter campaign and conventions and fan fiction! It's how I knew to seek it out...

But I didn't actually find fandom until the early 80s - saw an ad in Starlog for a Harrison Ford fanzine and got in that way!

This is a shout out to small fandoms.

Yes, there is five of us. No, no one is getting hundreds of kudos or comments.

But we all have immaculate taste and we are vibing. We are sitting in a cosy living room, taking turns reading stories. There is a fireplace and tea and rocking chairs. This is our house and these are our stories, inspired by and created for one another, with utmost love and care. And that's more than enough.

The Rules:

  1. Every twenty-four hours there will be another round. After every round, the ship in last place will be eliminated.
  2. If there are multiple ships tying for last place, there will be a special elimination round. In these rounds, every ship in last place will be eliminated, even if all the ships have tied equally.
  3. When there are only two ships remaining, they will face off against one another in a week-long poll to determine the victor.
  4. If the ship that you consider the best isn't listed here, hit the 'you forgot the best ship' option and reply to this post with the overlooked ship. The ship with the highest 'write-in' votes will be added to the next round. Unless the 'you forgot the best ship' option is the least voted for, in which case it will be eliminated. Welcome to the fray, Kalluzeb!
  5. This is all for fun. Don't take it too seriously ;)

Adios Anisoka! Our first casualty.

...now, a moment of silence for the write-in ships that didn't make it.

With Two Votes:

Sabedala, Velcinta, and Merrical.

With One Vote:

Gingerpilot, Wolfwren, Skybridger, LandoLuke, MaraLuke, HanLuke, ObiMaul, and of course, Peedy.

Round Two! Let's go!
