Tutorial for cross-stitching on paper ✴️
- Either print out a cross-stitch pattern or draw a design on graph paper (make sure it’s the size you want it). You can search for patterns for cross stitch, knitting or crochet colorwork, alpha friendship bracelets, perler beads, etc - anything on a grid
- Pick a picture to cross stitch onto. I used pages from old photo books. Unless the paper is already really thick, thoroughly glue a piece of scrap paper to the back of it to make it more stable.
- Use masking/washi tape to stick your pattern on top of the paper you want to cross stitch. You’re gonna use the pattern to poke holes in the other paper. So make sure the positioning of the design is where you want it (hold it in front of a window to check).
- Put a piece of felt or a folded up shirt or something under the papers (and a cutting mat underneath that) — this will allow a bit of give for a pin to actually go through the papers (you don’t want so much give that you’re poking huge holes - test on a scrap first!)
- Using a pin or other pokey tool, poke through both pieces of paper to make all the holes you’ll need for your design.
6. Now you have holes in your picture, you can cross stitch it just like you would fabric. Instead of tying a knot in the back when you start and end a thread, tape the ends down off to the side.
If you don’t know how to cross stitch, basically you stitch an X on every square in the pattern, from the top right to bottom left hole, and top left to bottom right. There’s lots of tutorials online if you need one
