Tutorial for cross-stitching on paper ✴️

  1. Either print out a cross-stitch pattern or draw a design on graph paper (make sure it’s the size you want it). You can search for patterns for cross stitch, knitting or crochet colorwork, alpha friendship bracelets, perler beads, etc - anything on a grid
  2. Pick a picture to cross stitch onto. I used pages from old photo books. Unless the paper is already really thick, thoroughly glue a piece of scrap paper to the back of it to make it more stable.
  3. Use masking/washi tape to stick your pattern on top of the paper you want to cross stitch. You’re gonna use the pattern to poke holes in the other paper. So make sure the positioning of the design is where you want it (hold it in front of a window to check).
  4. Put a piece of felt or a folded up shirt or something under the papers (and a cutting mat underneath that) — this will allow a bit of give for a pin to actually go through the papers (you don’t want so much give that you’re poking huge holes - test on a scrap first!)
  5. Using a pin or other pokey tool, poke through both pieces of paper to make all the holes you’ll need for your design.

6. Now you have holes in your picture, you can cross stitch it just like you would fabric. Instead of tying a knot in the back when you start and end a thread, tape the ends down off to the side.

If you don’t know how to cross stitch, basically you stitch an X on every square in the pattern, from the top right to bottom left hole, and top left to bottom right. There’s lots of tutorials online if you need one

i also posted process pics here that show some of the steps

i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit

ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like

with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing

is it too much to ask

gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that

This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

thanks this is super helpful! /gen

Fruit will last 3 weeks longer....

Why You Should Keep Fruit In Mason Jars Instead Of The Containers They Come In.......

When you get your fruit home from the grocery store, the first thing you should do is remove it from the plastic containers they’ve come in and recycle them. Next, clean out your sink and fill it with water (you could also use a large bowl). Then, toss in a few tablespoons of distilled vinegar. You’ll then want to submerge your fruit in the water and let it soak for about 10 to 15 minutes. The purpose of this is to get rid of any mold or bacteria on the fruit which is what causes them to go rotten more quickly.

Once the fruit has had a nice soak, remove it from the vinegar water, transfer to a strainer, and rinse with cool water. Leave the fruit out to dry on a tea towel or paper towel. Once dry, transfer the fruit to mason jars and seal up those lids. This is the best way to make your fruit last, particularly berries, which tend to be very prone to mold and bacteria buildup.

And that’s it! Incorporating these few extra steps into preparing and storing fruit can help you eliminate food waste, save money, and keep your fridge stocked with fresh produce for much longer.

I...tried to make a meme and got carried away and made A Thing that is like partially unfinished because i spent like 3 hours on it and then got tired.

I think this is mostly scientifically accurate but truth be told, there seems to be relatively little research on succession in regards to lawns specifically (as opposed to like, pastures). I am not exaggerating how bad they are for biodiversity though—recent research has referred to them as "ecological deserts."

Well u know what i want a quiet house on sunday morning and it's sunny outside i will play jazz records and make iced coffee and have eggs and some fruit and there's nothing to do and i'm calm and i have the freedom to go walk to a park near a river and watch people have picnics and feel the gentle breeze of the wind on my face and there are no sleepless nights because i go to bed early and peacefully because i have no worries and i can finally rest well
