Honest Question

How should you refer to your past with a transgender person?

BACKGROUND:

I have a cousin who is transgender female. She only came out recently and is in her transition. I don’t see her much anymore, (so I’m not comfortable calling and asking), but we grew up together so most of my childhood memories and stories include her.

So my question is, how do I tell these stories? Do I refer to her as her chosen name with she/her pronouns as she prefers now? Or he/him like it was when we were kids?

I’d like to make sure I’m doin the correct thing!

A little royal Klaroline AU that’s been floating in my head for a bit. I could be convinced to continue it

“Nik! Nik!”

Niklaus turned from the wood he just started chopping to see his younger brother running toward him full tilt. He smiled despite himself, though 13 years separated them, the brothers were very close.

“Did you hear? There’s a surprise swords competition today and anyone can enter!”

Nik thought about what Henrik was really telling him, “Father’s not here, he can’t stop you from entering.” It was true enough, but if Mikael returned and heard he had spent the day doing anything but working, and he would find out, Nik could only imagine his wrath. Their father had long ago forbidden Nik from entering the competitions, though he had no clue as to why. When he was fourteen, Niklaus had begged his father to let him enter the contest, thinking he could finally make his father proud by receiving recognition from the Queen’s generals. It was a foolish idea, that his father would ever be proud of him, and the beating he received ensured he had never asked since.

“Then I suppose you should get your sword and show them how it’s done. I need to finish this, you go win for both of us, yes?”

He watched Henrik run off toward the competition ground, feeling a bit sorry for himself, before turning back to the wood he had to chop and pile before Mikael returned home.

Princess Caroline watched the contest from inside a sun shelter beside the completion grounds. Local men and a few women fought for the chance to train to be a part of the country’s prestigious guard. Those who showed promise were brought to the capital for further training, though only 10 were chosen each year for the guard, and this year, unknown to anyone but her inner circle, she would choose an additional 5 for her personal guard.

The contests involved sword play and mild hand combat to gauge their skills and strength. They were never announced so there was no chance to invest in heavy training, or compete in more than one region.

She turned to her friend and advisor, Enzo, with a look of utter boredom.

“I haven’t seen anyone today I would trust my life with. Have we ever taken anyone from this region?”

Lorenzo St John, along great with being one of her most trusted advisors and a commander in the royal guard, was one of her best friends. She trusted him and his judgement implicitly.

He managed to look slightly amused and totally bored at the same time. “I honestly don’t know. You know the Mystic region is more agriculture than anything else, but they have to have a fair shot too. Just be glad there’s only one more region after this,” he gave her a sideways smirk, “and that no one can see you in here.”

She sighed, if she had to play princess while sitting through these contests she would have lost her mind. She had Enzo to thank for the privacy, since her attendance was apparently mandatory.

Three men were chosen for further training in the capital, Very few, but more than usual for the mystic region. Caroline and Enzo were discussing the most promising recruit, though much smaller than his competitors, he won easily on his swordsmanship alone, when the were interrupted by a guard.

“Excuse me Princess, Sir, we have a problem.”

“What do you mean he’s only 12? how is a 12 year old the best swordsman in the region?”

Caroline couldn’t believe what she was hearing, her most promising recruit was too young to train for the guard. Her luck just figured.

The boy in question stood in front of her, looking very much like he had something to say.

“Go ahead, Henrik was it?”

He nodded, “it’s just that, I’m not the best swordsman in the region, my brother Nik is, he taught me how to fight.” He looked down, almost shyly before continuing, “our father won’t let him enter competitions, or train with the others, so no one knows how good he is.”

Caroline frowned, sharing the look with Enzo. Why would their father keep the older brother from training? Someone with Henrik’s skill and a few years older was exactly what she needed.

Niklaus looked up from his work to the commotion he heard from the road. He sincerely hoped his eyes were playing tricks, and he wasn't watching his younger brother climbing out of a carriage marked with the royal crest. He should know by now, he didn't have that kind of luck.

My best wedding advice

From my experience as a bridesmaid, bride and guest

• If you’re having an outdoor wedding, have a REAL backup plan. Not just “we’ll just do it in that room over there” because odds are it won’t work

• Drink Gatorade. Water is lovely, but you need to replace those electrolytes!

• An open bar is never a good idea.

• Avoid dancing/walking on wooden decks with high heels (you WILL get stuck)

• Have food available for the entire length of the event. There’s no such thing as too much

• How long do you think it will take to get ready? Add another hour.

• Have someone who knows you well check your make up before the artist leaves

• Hairspray will help hold your dress in place (think straps, detail pieces)

• Proofread all speaches beforehand

Nina Dobrev attends at the European premiere of ‘xXx’: Return of Xander Cage’ at Cineworld 02 Arena on January 10, 2017 in London, United Kingdom.

Huh, third actress I’ve noticed who- once out of a movie/tv series- cuts their hair.  Emma Watson. Jennifer Lawrence. Nine Dobrev.  Feel free to mention anyone I’ve missed plus theories.

@these-dreams-go-on I've actually thought about this, and I have a theory. When you are in such a big series, that pretty much puts you on the map, I think people don't see you as an actress anymore, but as the character they got to know you as. Let's take Alexis Bledel. I actually couldn't remember her name and googled Rory Gilmore, because that's who she is to me. And I think part of that is because she still LOOKS like Rory Gilmore. There is nothing about her appearance that sets her appearance apart from that role. But when I see Emma Watson with her short hair, or straight hair, I don't see Hermione Granger, I just see Emma Watson. So I think changing their hair (since that's pretty much all you can change about your appearance without drastic measures) is basically their way of separating themselves from that character. I'm sure right now, while trying to get a movie career going, the last thing Nina wants is to be "oh that girl from the vampire show?" She wants people to know her name. That's my theory at least.

Knowing what you want to write, but not knowing how to get to the part you want to write is one of the most frustrating things I’ve ever experienced.

I’ve been in the process of moving for the past few weeks and only just a got caught up on TVD, so I can finally weigh in on this.

Tyler’s death actually kind of pissed me off, but not for the reasons everyone else seems to have. I mean yes, Tyler deserved better after everything he had been through. Of all the characters on the show, I really wished him a happy ending the most. But with the way the writers have tanked some of the other characters, I wasn’t really expecting much else.

And yes, why does everyone always have to die? Especially everyone Caroline is close to, what is with that?

But no, my issue is this:

I wish I could say I was heartbroken that one of my favourite characters was dead, but the first thing that went through my head was:

“Really? Is that it?”

They’ve been teasing a major character death for weeks, and this is it? Tyler Lockwood who, except for one, also pointless cameo, hasn’t even been in seasons 7 or 8. That’s your major character death? Not one of the ACTUAL main characters?

I might be alone in this, but I don’t even consider him a relevant character anymore, let alone a major one, his story was done, he left.

I sincerely hope that this is a misleader, and something bigger is coming, but I have no faith.

So disappointed. Such a pointless death.
