Mickey lived on a parallel world for about two years, and after he returns to his original world, he probably keeps discovering ways in which the earths diverged. Idioms that he finally learned how to say on the other earth he has to relearn how to say the way he first learned to. History wasn’t his best subject to begin with, but sometimes he starts talking to Martha about countries that either don’t exist anymore or never did in this timeline. There are sports teams and models of cars and brands of cereal and all sorts of things where he can remember the names but he can’t always remember which world they were from. He’ll get a jingle stuck in his head and none of his friends can help him remember what it was for because it never aired in their world. He’ll learn of a celebrity death and be certain that person already died- but wait, that was in the Cybermen attack, that must have been the other world. Just because he’s home now doesn’t mean his time on the other world is forgotten, and sometimes he feels so isolated from the world around him because there are all these things he thinks should be one way that are now another.

What does SSL do?

SSL changes the first part of your blog URL from http to https. That extra ’s’ stands for ‘secure’. When SSL is activated on your blog, the connection between tumblr servers and people browing your blog becomes encrypted.

Without SSL, all the data sent back and forth is sent in clear text. That means that third parties (for example, your Internet Service Provider) can easily intercept and read all the traffic from the people who are on your blog. They can even modify how your blog is received on other people’s computers, doing nefarious things such as injecting ads or tracking users. And you would never know.

With SSL, only tumblr can read the traffic going to them, and only tumblr is able to send the contents of your blog to a viewer’s computer.

Why should I care?

Chances are, you don’t spend a lot of time looking at your own blog. Activating SSL isn’t for you. It’s for other people. It’s for your fans. SSL respects the privacy of the people viewing your blog.

But why does it ruin my theme?

When SSL is activated on your blog, browsers sometimes decide that you want every part of the website to be served over https. If theme resources are loaded over http, they are blocked, so important parts of your theme become missing.

If you know the basics of HTML, you can look through the theme and make sure that no links start with http. Odds are, you can change those links to https and it will be fine (though this won’t always work).

You can always consider using a different theme. All of my themes support SSL.

Okay, I want to activate SSL. How do I do it?

Go to your blog settings and toggle Always serve blog over SSL. It’s as simple as that! Repeat for all the blogs that you own.

I’m a theme-maker. How can I support SSL?

First, the blog on which you do your theme testing should have SSL enabled, so you’ll know that your theme works.

Whenever you have an external link for a theme resource, make sure that it comes from a server that has https enabled, and make sure that the actual link you use in the code actually starts with https.

Note that the links in <a> tags don’t really matter, since you don’t load resources through those. It only matters for elements like <script>, <link>, <iframe>, <img>, and other things like that.

If you need to load a resource from a site that doesn’t have https, then consider uploading the resource to another host that does use it. A great example would be tumblr’s own file host. There’s also rawgit.

Also, replacing http:// with just // might work as well, but I’m not completely sure about how browsers usually react to that.
