Listen, I totally agree that itโ€™s super sad that it turned out Shuro had been annoyed by Laios the whole time heโ€™d considered them to be friends. I get it! Iโ€™ve been in his shoes, I was the annoying friend.

But I think itโ€™s also important to not ignore the feelings of Shuro, the one who was being annoyed, at the same time. Itโ€™s possible to acknowledge how both people felt without villainizing one of them.

I feel like when it comes to outsiders hearing about a fight two people had, theyโ€™ll do this thing where they take the side of whoever they feel most bad for or relate to the most and gang up on/ignore the reasons the other person has and it kind of sucks!

And the point Shuro makes about it being worse that Laios meant no harm is probably because it meant there was no reason for him to tell him to fuck off without looking like an asshole!!

Thereโ€™s no reason to blame Shuroโ€™s inability to communicate that he wanted space if youโ€™re not going to do the same for Laiosโ€™s social blunders.

Laios is socially inept, but in terms of miscommunication, I think pretending to be nice instead of just being direct and saying you find someone annoying and just hoping they take a not-hint is a lot worse than just being friendly in an accidentally annoying way and not realizing it because nearly everyone tries to be passive-aggressive about it instead of just asking you to stop.

There's also the fact that Shuro was trying to court Falin, and likely only was nice to Laios (instead of being loudly annoyed but helpful like Chilchuk) because he thought it would make Falin like him more.

Itโ€™s possible to be courteous of someoneโ€™s feelings and dislike them at the same time. Shuro wasnโ€™t really pretending to be nice, but heโ€™s used to a more indirect method of communicating where you drop hints and hope the other person gets it without having to cause a scene

Thereโ€™s nothing in the text that suggests Shuro was only โ€œniceโ€ (more like tolerant) to Laios because he wanted Falin to like him. Some people are just like that and donโ€™t like to rock the boat so they tough it out. That indirectness is also an autistic trait in some people where they have too much empathy and donโ€™t want to hurt someoneโ€™s feelings (if itโ€™s not just the cultural differences)

Itโ€™s also unreasonable to assume courting Falin is why Shuro didnโ€™t directly tell Laios because he only fell in love with her some time during their adventures, but he had been indirect with and annoyed by Laios since they met. There are side comics about it idr where

โ€‹Shuro admits he is envious of Laiosโ€™s ability to be direct with other people

Dungeon Meshi Episode 17 SPOILERS (Mostly Toshiro ramblings)

.

.

.

I think a big reason why I became so interested in his character is cuz as a Black person, I know exactly what it's like to hold your tongue and not say your piece and feel like your opinions may not matter. Especially in the face of Whyt people. I've had my fair share of speaking up and attempting to set boundaries with a couple of Whyt friends in the past and lets just say...we're not friends anymore lmao.

However, there definitely comes a point where that become a You Problem. That in some cases it's *you* who's holding yourself back. And it was VERY refreshing seeing Toshiro admit there are things he should've said. And that's he's envious of Laios' very open nature. Because I too get envious even 'till this day of those who are readily open about their thoughts and feelings. And it's something that is hard to try to do yourself, to try and be like that when you've grown up the opposite. It's envy and self loathing, but also a lot of admiration for the other person. A lot.

I definitely noticed how Toshiro spoke more after the fight. It made me happy to see lol If he reaaally hated Laios, he honestly would've just left him to die. However, despite appearing as this Law Abiding Citizenโ„ข๏ธ (not affectionate) that some of the audience want him to be, he literally was like "ring this bell and I'll help you escape the police โœŒ๐Ÿพ" And that's something I'm not surprised quite a few people are willing to ignore.

Toshiro and Kabru, in my opinion, are very similar in that they're shown in what appears to be bad light first. But it's up to the audience to pick up what's been put down in order to understand that they're also valid in their thoughts and feelings. Laios and The Gang are not the only ones who deserve understanding, and this is something that's suggested so far throughout the story.

I just realized that I could share this flash game ad I saved off of MySpace in like 2005 to tumblr.

Itโ€™s so important to me. It makes me feel like Iโ€™m losing my mind even after 20 years.

some of you guys donโ€™t understand that friendship and platonic kindredship is the real essence of romance. you wanna love someone? fine, but you have to like them first.

โ€œi see them more as platonic friends!โ€ i do too, thatโ€™s what the relationship is based off of in my head. whatโ€™s not clickingโ€ฆ? like that is the point.

it's important to mock and belittle military and law enforcement to signal to others that these are not respectable professions, both to dissuade entry and to devalorize the institutions in the public eye
