Like... you know the protest is going to get disrupted. You KNOW the cops are gonna come and put a stop to it at some point. It's just a matter of how long can you delay. If you have your keys on you, the cops will just fucking steal your car (they'll call it 'impounding' but they're just stealing it). Instead, they have to get a shitload of tow-trucks out there to remove the cars.

They could have just organized to have a friend ride with them, take the car keys, and walk off.

Nah, they'd get spotted and stopped by the cops possibly.

So to ENSURE that no one can move their cars without getting a fucking tow truck fleet, the threw their own car keys into the bay.

Protests are supposed to be inconvenient and disruptive. That's the whole point. Rarely do people realize that the inconvenience and disruption is also suffered by the protestors themselves.

Not only will they have to deal with getting their cars out of the impound, but they have to go through the trouble of getting replacement keys (if they didn't think ahead and get replacements made ahead of time).
