It has been hard for me to talk about how what is going on with Israel and Palestine is affecting me personally, but I grew up in Gaza and most of my family still lives there. My father did not survive the bombings last week and I have not been able to contact my younger sister in days. I am try to being understanding that most people do not have personal connections to what is happening and therefore are justifying their silence, but is heartbreaking to see this misinformation being spread. What’s happening there is a genocide, not a war. It is not antisemitic to support Palestine, it’s not even antiemetic to criticise Israel. There is no grey area or neutrality regarding this, and it is so easy to find resources that will educate you on the subject. It is my people and my home being destroyed so I will never be silent about this, but I please urge everyone to get informed and start speaking up and finding ways they can help.

Reminder that associating hair length with gender is not a culturally universal concept and that many indigenous folks in North America don’t cut their hair for cultural reasons that have nothing to do with gender.

Reminder that a native guy should be allowed to wear his hair in long braids without people calling it gender nonconformity or saying he’s breaking gender norms, because hair length has nothing to do with his gender norms.

Reminder that a queer native woman should be allowed to wear her hair long without being automatically read as femme presenting, that she can be butch with long hair, because long hair is not associated with femininity in her culture.

Reminder that many native folks cut their hair for solemn reasons, usually mourning, and remarking on it as a reflection of personal style or gender presentation can be deeply disrespectful. No, she didn’t just get a fierce butch haircut - she cut her hair because someone died. No, he didn’t cave to a gender conforming haircut - he cut his hair because someone died.

My college was next to an assisted living facility and one time we went over there to draw people’s portraits so we could get practice drawing older people. The lady I was drawing idly told me that she "dealt quite handily with her first husband” while making a stabbing gesture. Five minutes later she requested I make sure not to draw her double chin. I honored that request.

So when I was a child my grandmother told all these great stories about growing up in the Alaskan wilderness. Amazing bad ass stories about her and my great-grandmother. I recently asked my mom why my great-grandmother moved from Texas to Alaska in the first place. Turns out my Great-grandfather was abusive to my great grandmother for years and she lived with that until the first time he hit my grandmother, who was like three at the time, my great-grandmother got him very drunk and beat him to death then moved to Alaska to hide from the cops.

Except, they won't be. Even if they get actual Native American actors to play these characters, even if they bring on a Native American to serve as a cultural advisor, it wont matter. Why? Because Smeyer appropriated a real Native American tribe and twisted their culture and history in her fantasy books for her own profit.

This fictional Quileute Tribe is and always will be disrespectful to the real life Quileute tribe.

I don’t think a lot of people understand that transphobia is, in fact, inherently racist.

It’s inherently racist because it assumes all cultures follow the western concept of the absolute gender binary rooted in what genitals you have.

It’s also racist because it defines womanhood using conventionally attractive white women as the baseline.

Women who have facial hair, have thick or “excessive” body hair, have broad shoulders, have “masculine” facial features like angular jaws, have deep voices, are taller than “average”, have receding hairlines, are muscular, etc are immediately assumed to be men because they don’t fit white European ideals of womanhood. And these standards do affect white women of course, whether they’re cis or trans, but they mostly target Black and brown women.

There’s a reason why Black women, particularly athletes, are the ones who get targeted with so many accusations of being men. Why they’re expected to undergo hormone testing. Why they’re accused of having “excessive” testosterone. Why they’re expected to undergo physical examinations to “prove” that they’re “real” women.

Radical feminism, trans inclusive or not, is based around biological essentialist white supremacy whether radfems want to admit it or not.

All roads of bio-essentialism will eventually lead back to the white supremacist cause that shit was invented for. And I am speaking directly to white women (and those who were raised as white women, like me) when I say you NEED to learn and understand this. You need to know where the gateway goes before you walk through it unknowingly.

If you are willing to believe that “men” (as defined by white cisheteronormative standards) are inherently, genetically, irreversibly predisposed to be more violent, less intelligent, less compassionate, less morally “good”, less worthy of existence/safety/resources, less human, then it will be that much easier to slowly convince you that the same is true for any other groups you feel threatened by (regardless of how irrational or bias-based that feeling of threat might be). Black men. Black women. Asians. Latinos. Indigenous people. Jews. Muslims. Disabled people. Immigrants. All those others, the people who are not you, the unknowns. That ideology of essentialism, once it gets you to buy in to the base idea behind it (that our genetics are the final and most important determinant of our worth), can then sell you a pitch that feels validating and encouraging for your fears on any and all groups of people you have some kind of discomfort about.

From there it is easier to convince you that you are one of the special ones, who is predestined by your special perfect genes and your special perfect (white, normative) body parts/physical characteristics to be “good”, that you are superior, that the world is yours because of how you were born.

It is easier to convince you that it is your obligation to engage in some kind of great struggle of violence against those who are inherently “bad” and universally threaten “good” people like you.

It is easier to convince you that you can spot these supposed threats on sight simply because they do not look like you, that there is a universal roadmap of physical characteristics and telltale cultural signs that can predict who will enact violence against you.

It is easier to convince you that people with those characteristics (that mix of genes) cannot be trusted, that the only morally acceptable course of action is proactive violence, that you will never be safe until these threats (never people, always “threats”) are eliminated from “your spaces” once and for all (and this ideology will tell you that because you are one of the Good Ones, because you are chosen and blessed and Right, that your spaces are everywhere and everything, that is is your world and they are just living in it).

It is easier to convince you to enact that violence throughout your life without hesitation, and to believe that you are righteous and good in doing so.

It is easier to make sure you don’t think twice about how you got here from where this began.

All these ideas build up on top of each other, each fallacy supported by the one that came beneath it like jenga blocks. That all escalated pretty quickly, right? So does the pathway into this fascist white supremacist ideology from stuff like “gender critical” or “misandrist” politics. Don’t get sucked into that vortex just because the opening pitch comfortably affirms your gut instincts and least charitable fears. And don’t give that flame room to breathe.
