A/N 2: Although this fic is titled “Soulmates”, it does not take place within the soulmate troupe. I feel it’s important to specify that, so you aren’t disappointed.

A/N 3: Obviously, this is a fictional story. Jensen is single and never started dating Danneel because in this little world I created, he was already dating my OFC when he filmed Ten Inch Hero. I'm so emotional about the fact that the softest and least angry we've seen Dean in YEARS is in the project where Jensen had ALL the control over his character.

This and yet when SPN was airing and I'd and other. OG Dean fans would complain, when I said, these writers are forgetting a lot about who Dean is, it would be written off as just dean girl favoritism. Dean sure had some anger, his mother died when he was 4, his father emotionally used and abused him, his brother didn't even seem to notice everything he did for him(he was a kid he gets a pass WHILE he was a kid but not afterwards), but anger was NEVER who he was supposed to be, it wasn't supposed to be his pretty much only character trait.

It wasn't even a major character trait until literally years into the show when the writers just I don't know forgot. Dean was the one who wanted to hunt, not for revenge but so other families wouldn't suffer like his had. Dean was the one who got between angry John and angry Sam(I mean hell a big part of the season 2 premier, with Dean between life and death, was a metaphor for how in life John and Sam spent so much time angry with each other that Dean became invisible emotionally to both of them, they didn't even realize the toll it took on Dean or the weight he was carrying). Of course he'd have some anger but it was never his default, not like the writers made it in the final seasons but acted like he'd always been that way.

This this this a thousand times this (on the anger front...I don't think Dean ever WANTED to hunt I think he thought it was all he was good for, but that's another topic IMO).

One day I will finally write my "Dean is not the angry man in his house" meta I swear to god. Despite how normalized violence and macho posturing as a way to assert authority and control were for him via hunting and John's abuse, anger was NOT his default in times of grief or stress. Not until years into the show, and certainly not the kind of anger that lashes out at the people around him.

He was the mediator in his family! He COULDN'T default to that kind of externally-directed anger because everyone else already did! His defaults were silence and self-punishment. His anger when it did come up was focused INWARD. Even when he had a real reason to be upset with someone, the anger he felt was internalized.

God this is the one bit of fanon characterization of Dean that drives me absolutely insane, even when I choose to engage with it because it's so pervasive and some fans really do make a compelling case for it in fic and meta. When you look at Dean's story as a whole, it's SO CLEAR that anger isn't what rules him. If anything, it's love and fear.
