Please don’t let fandom ruin something you love. Walk away and unfollow the fans and enjoy the thing by yourself, or find a limited circle of people who ignore the discourse, or get your irl friends into the thing and collectively ignore the Internet community, or blacklist from here to the moon if you need to and only ever scroll through your rarepair ship’s tag on AO3. But don’t let fandom distort a show or a movie or a book or a comic you used to love so badly that you can’t enjoy the original anymore. Please. It isn’t worth it.

This week I am very happy to present a collaboration comic with my friend Chrissie, who has been generous in sharing with me her experiences of gender dynamics in a technical field, and then helping me craft them into a comic narrative.

Whenever I see Chrissie’s work I’m always impressed at the cool, creative things she does. When we were discussing this comic, she told me: “I find men persistently try to direct me lots now too, which is probably the biggest problem I consistently run into”, and my feelings around that fact are a terrible and familiar blend of frustration, sadness, and lack of surprise.

When we talk about the differences in how men and women are treated professionally, especially in technical fields, we are often dismissed with ‘everyone has to deal with that’, or ‘women need to demonstrate more confidence with their skills’, or ‘they’re just trying to be helpful’, or ‘it’s all in your head’.

It’s frustrating when we know something like this is happening, but we spend so much of our time actually trying to get people to believe that it’s a real phenomenon. I find narratives like Chrissie’s validating in that she has a comparative set of experiences and is like ‘oh yeah, people totally think I’m less competent at my job now. it’s totally a thing’.  So, can guys just believe us already and get on helping it not happen?

actually @ every fanfiction writer whether you wrote something that got thousands of reblogs and comments and became a staple in your fandom, or you wrote one fic and deleted it, or you write mutilchaptered fics that never get a final update, or write short fics, or long fics, or used to write and now you don’t, or you deleted/orphaned your works, or you only share with friends:

thank you.

sharing your writing is hard. and sometimes it’s thankless. sometimes it’s such a negative experience that I wonder how anyone does it at all. but you are needed; you are wanted. whether or not we properly acknowledge it, you are a vital part of fandom culture. thanks for sharing.

Yes.

A lot. A big lot. I'm very sorry.

But I'm done with it. I'll fight strong and hard for all the people who appreciate and love me. I don't want to lose any other friend by this crippling anxiety. No more losing myself.

I'm Andrei Skelepina. Artist and illustrator. And I'll learn to be proud of myself.

in case anyone was curious 👉👈

reserve the right to refuse service and all that, complex designs will increase price a bit, paypal only, you can do half up front and half after it’s done if that’s what you’re comfortable with, if you want me to mail you a traditional sketch page i can do that

(examples of sort of what that would be) (customer request compliant)

if you buy a commission from me i will love you forever and probably throw in some extra stuff because i enjoy making people things and getting money for it is a big plus for my broke ass :)))

Seeing this exchange on Reddit was so sad. Men and boys need love and affection as much as women and girls.

Fuck, this reminds me of this good post I saw on I believe Twitter. Can’t find it and even so I’d rather not repost it if it can be helped but it was basically some dude crawling into bed w/ his girlfriend/wife and he was clearly upset and she offers him sex to make him feel better but he declines so instead she cuddles him and he starts crying and says thank you. Super cute and sweet.

Is it this?

Yeah! That’s the one. Thanks.

That post reminds me of this one I saw on Reddit:

Kill the idea that men don’t want physical affection 2KForever.

Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character

A Multi-Step Guide Written by a Visually Impaired Writer and Blogger

I’m hoping this blog will over time develop its own following, and when it does people will inevitably see my bio and notice what I included: I’m visually impaired.

Yes, a visually impaired writer, and I’ve written with two blind characters before so I have some practice in the field.

So, inevitably, someone is going to ask how to write a blind character.

Or, at least, I hope you’ll ask someone who’s actually blind or visually impaired about writing a blind character before you get too involved with your new WIP.

All parts will be tagged #blindcharacter in my blog, and I will add links to every post as I finish each part. Follow my blog for more writing advice.

Note, this post updates fairly often and old versions are still floating around out there. The most current version of this post is pinned to my blog with any new guides or links you might of missed.

As of 24 January 2021, this is the most extensive and screen reader friendly version of this post.

In which I tell you how to begin making a blind character who is more than a cardboard cutout

In which I give you a basic rundown on how to write from the perspective of a character who can’t see and still make the narration descriptive

Your blind readers will thank you for not being the 5000th person to do this and manage to actually finish your story. (Do you have any idea how many stories I’ve noped out of within two chapters because of these clichés? A Lot.)

Everything I can tell you about 1) how to learn how to use a cane 2) how a cane works 3) how to describe what your character experiences with their cane 4) everything I know on guide dogs

5 January 2021 Edit: This link has been fixed to correspond with the correct post

Or, really, very normal everyday things for blind people, the inclusion of which will make your characters more real and authentic. It’s the tiny details.

There’s no way to write a cure for your blind character that doesn’t make blind readers hate you. Sorry. We came here to finally experience a relatable character who experiences the world like us, but none of us are getting cured so seeing this character we learned to love become something alien from us in the end feels like a slap in the face

I thought I’d finally make a post explaining the complicated situation about my vision. Includes an explanation of visual snow and exotropia, two of the three causes for my vision issues.

Someone asked what being blind and falling in love have to do with each other. Honestly, blindness changes your perspective on everything and it makes an impact on every relationship you have. This includes some things that you definitely do not want your character’s love interest to be/do.

You know those flow charts of “should you do x?” going around? It’s like that, but screen reader friendly. Should you write blind jokes. It’s pretty complicated and there are a lot of possible scenarios and details to consider.

In this I discuss what I would like to see done in fanfiction with Toph’s character after ten years of reading Avatar the Last Airbender fanfiction

It’s became a popular question, so to make the answer easier/faster for everyone to access, I wrote what will usually be my initial answer. Below there are a few links to some notable past questions on this subject.

A small personal essay addressing the nuances of the mourning period you experience with a new disability. The mourning period is mentioned in other guides, but this is more detailed.

While Molly talks about the myths and truths about heightened senses, I talk about the correlation with blindness and neuro-divergency and how co-morbid disorders/disabilities might affect sensory processing.

a:tla, I’m looking at you (and my eyes aren’t blank)

My grandmother told me about her blind aunt and how she sent letters. It led me to speculate about all the O&M things people develop on their own but never get a chance to pass onto other blind people. Technology and techniques are lost in history and reinvented, including the white cane ad guide dogs.

Includes a little history on the introduction of guide dogs into the 20th century

The Dead and Demised eBook is out!

Hey remember how I said I had an announcement?

Honestly there’ll be more to come but

My Novella The Dead and Demised is officially out on eBook

(My beautiful cover was done by the fantastic @izuris btw)

What’s The Dead and Demised? The very short hand summary is that it’s about two brothers who get murdered seven years apart, and as ghosts they have to find a way to get their murderer convicted.

It’s a book about death, revenge, sibling relationships, and all the hilarity that comes with trying to interact with the physical world when you’re dead.

While there’s still some sites that are waiting to put it up (looking at you amazon) You can currently find it for purchase in these places.

You can also find it on Overdrive, Baker and Taylor and Bibliotheca! I’ll add the amazon link whenever it becomes available.

Physical copies will be coming! It’s just going to take me a bit more time to get it all set up.

Even if you can’t afford to grab one right now please share this post!

And if you do give it a read and enjoy it PLEASE leave a review on any site you are able to. It’ll do wonders in terms of helping me reach more readers.

Thank you!

How to live amongst the stars

  1. Speak to the stars at night, they will not welcome a stranger.
  2. Make sure you own something gold.
  3. If you do not own anything gold and cannot buy something, draw a star on your left cheek with a marker and wear it for a full day. Ignore the stares.
  4. The stars will understand and in a week, a golden pin will appear on your pillow.
  5. At night, go and sit in the middle of a field, any field will work, and wait in silence for ten minutes.
  6. Do not stand up or leave.
  7. Search your soul, a name will appear, not one you know or one you will remember, but say it anyway, the stars will hear.
  8. You should be wearing your pin.
  9. If you are, the stars will come down and dance with you, if you aren’t, they will stay there, twinkling in the sky.
  10. Dance until dawn, marvel at the colours that swim around you, and the brightness of the very universe. Your energy will not fade, so do not worry about the time ahead of you, only think about that moment.
  11. Once a month, on the same day, meet with the stars again, you shall learn about each other, and when you are ready, tell them that you would like to live as one of them.
  12. They will ask you if you are sure, and do not be afraid to answer no, the stars understand, they will still meet you again next month.
  13. If you answer yes, they will disappear, and you shall awake at dawn in your bed, having had a good nights sleep.
  14. Your day will proceed as normal, and you will almost be convinced that the night before was a dream, but do not forget.
  15. That night, your dreams will be filled with the ones whom love you, the ones whom you love, your good memories, reasons to stay, and you will doubt your decision.
  16. Do not worry, the stars are kind, it is their intention.
  17. You shall meet up the next month, and tell them that you have changed your mind. They will nod, and float back into the sky, burning millions of miles away.
  18. Time will pass, and you will miss them. They will miss you too.
  19. You may be disappointed, you may believe that you do not live within the stars, and that is true. But do not mourn. For they live within you, the very stardust the flows within your veins.
  20. Whenever you are lonely, search your soul, a name will appear, not one you know or one you will remember, but say it anyway, the stars will hear. And they will listen.
