Mayte met Prince in 1990 when she was 16-years-old backstage at a concert in Germany. Her mother had sent Prince a tape of Mayte belly dancing. When Mayte turned 17 she moved to Prince’s home, Paisley Park, and he became her legal guardian. They married on February 14, 1996 when she was 22 and Prince was 37. Their child Amiir was born with Pfeiffer syndrome on October 16, 1996. He died six days later. After Mayte suffered a miscarriage in 1997 their relationship became strained. They eventually divorced in 2000.
