For anyone who wants a free pose-able human reference for drawing

The other day I came across this awesome program by accident (I don’t even remember what I was actually searching for, but on the several times I’ve looked for a program like this I’ve had no luck). It’s cool enough that I wanted to share it.

Image

It’s called DesignDoll (website here) and it’s a program that lets you shape and pose a human figure pretty much however you want.

There’s a trial version with no expiration date that can be downloaded for free, as well as the “pro license” version priced at $79. I’ve only had the free version for two days so far, so I’m not an expert and I haven’t figured out all of the features yet, but I’ve got the basics down. The website’s tutorials are actually pretty helpful for the basics, as well.

Here’s the page for download, which has a list of the features available in both versions.

There are three features the free version doesn’t have:

  • Can’t save OBJ files for export
  • Can’t download models and poses from Doll Atelier (a sharing site for users; note that the site is in Japanese, though)
  • It can’t load saved files

The third one means that if you make a pose, save it, and close the program, you can’t load that pose/modified model later. You have to start with the default model. I found that out when I tried to load a file from the day before (this is why reading is important…). Whether saving your modifications (and downloading models and poses) is worth $80 is up to you.

But, the default model is pretty nice and honestly if all you’re looking for is a basic pose reference it should work fairly well as it is. Here’s what it looks like:

There’s a pose tag that lets you drag each joint into place and rotate body parts. The torso and waist can be twisted separately, and it seems like everything pretty much follows the range of movement it would have on an actual human.

Even the entire shoulder area is actually movable along with the joint! See, like how the scapular area of the back raises with the arm:

The morphing tag is one of the coolest features, in my opinion. It lets you pick and choose from a library of pre-set forms for the head, chest, arms, legs, etc. It has some more realistic body shapes in addition to more anime-like ones. Don’t like the options there? Mix a few to get what you want! Each option has a slider that lets you blend as much or as little as you want into the design.

So you, too, can create beautiful things like kawaii Muscle-chan!!

The scale tag lets you mess with the proportions and connection points of different joints. This feature combined with the morphing feature not only allows more body shape variations, but it also means that you can do things like make a more digitigrade model if you want. (The feet only have an ankle joint, but for regular human poses that’s all that you really need, so whatever.)

Or you can make a weird chubby alien-like thing with giant hands and balloon tiddies if that’s more your thing.

The ability to pose hands to the extent it allows is far more than I could have hoped for from a free program. Seriously, you can change the position of each finger joint individually, as well as how spread out the fingers are from each other. Each crease on the diagram below is a point of movement, and the circles are for spread between fingers.

And to make it a bit more convenient, there’s a library of pre-set hand poses you can pick from as well, and then change the pose from that if you like.

In both versions, you can also import OBJ files from other places for the model to hold, like if you wanted to have them hold a sword or something.

Basically, this program is awesome and free and you should totally check it out if you want a good program for creating pose references.

I just wanted to add a little more to this. If you have trouble figuring out how light sources work in your drawings this also allows you to choose where to have a light source.

That shaded ball on the left is your light source. You can see how moving the point changed the shadow cast.

Oh and all those other nifty looking things in that bottom bar there, yeah it’s what you think. You can change the model color to one of these presets or even customize your own palette.

Plus for all you lovely people who want something a little more simplified to use as a pose reference

You can turn your model into the classic wire frame.

Why reblog this? Because for more visual creators, this will be like the lumberjack discovering chainsaws. “Reblog to save lives” as the saying goes.

Alternatives to Hot Topic

REAL TALK: WE ALL NEED TO STOP SHOPPING AT HOT TOPIC

Hot topic went down the shitter long ago and it’s time to find a new place to get your totally awesome fandom inspired t-shirts and goth gear. Here are some sites where you can get your expressive clothing without feeding into this corporate shit monster of a store. Most if not all of the art on these sites are posted by the original artist. (I’m not sure about the goth stuff, you might have to check, some are brand name though so it should be fine)

Mmmm. Gonna step in here as a former employee. The hate for HT gets under my skin sometimes, because people don’t seem to understand how business works?

In the first example, that shirt is designed by the band, not Hot Topic themselves as a company. Most of the band merch is like this. (And that damn Homestuck shirt was not stolen or whitewashed Jesus Christ. It was part of a contest thst Andrew Hussie approved of. And do y'all now know how printing works? Colors shift in printing.)

Sizing.

Yeah, sizing can be weird, but once you understand how it works(or, y'know, ask an employee for help instead if whining), it’s super easy.

The “women’s” t-shirts are actually juniors sizes. Depending on the store, they’ll normally be sold up to an XXL in store, and up to a 4x online(which can be ordered in the store).

The regular t-shirts(like most of the band tees not specifically put in the women’s section), run like any normal t-shirt without much variation from brand to brand.

Men’s pants, totally normal sizing.

Women’s pants, again, I think they run off of Junior’s sizing.

But seriously, Hot Topic jeans are the only ones I wear. They’re stretchy and comfier than any other pair of jeans I’ve worn.

And aaaah. The age old “You guys used to sell punk and goth stuff. Ugh.”

It’s still available. It’s just online. You can buy Tripp pants to your heart’s content on the website.

There’s a reason that it’s not sold physically in store. It’s EXPENSIVE. Most people aren’t willing to spend 70 bucks or more on one pair of pants. It’s super niche as well. There simply isn’t the market for it anymore.

The entire 3 years I worked for the company, I only had ONE person actually wanting to buy Tripp pants once I mentioned that I could order them through the website(which I told everyone who ever complained about Hot Topic “changing”).

And guess what? After I looked on the website with this person for a good half an hour and took down SKUs and wrote down their entire order for them, so they could keep hold of it and hand it to the cashier when they were ready….

They just left. Never bought the pants.

One time we got a return of Tripp pants from someone that ordered them online. Those things sat on the rack for months.

So the reason why “they don’t sell punk and goth stuff anymore”… is because punk and goth people AREN’T BUYING IT.

So. For the Mad Love thing. Most of the world isn’t tumblr. So most people just… y'know, didn’t care.

I had 40 year old women come in super excited to buy Joker/Harley stuff. Honestly, it was mostly just Harley stuff. There was maybe one or two shirts that actually depicted the two of them together, and then some accessories with the matching color schemes.

It’s something that exists in the DC universe. And some people like it. There’s a market for it.

Not that I myself support it, but other people, especially the older crowd, absolutely adore it. Some people just like it for the aesthetic, and some don’t even know much about DC.

And tbh, it was just the higher ups pushing this shit. None of us at store level actually liked it. We were all sick of Harley Quinn in general lol.

And here’s a wild idea. If you don’t like something. Contact the company. Send them an email. Voice your complaints TO the company.

Because flat out not shopping there doesn’t hurt the CEOs or the people on top.

It hurts the minimum wage workers.

Sales associates are already stretched thin, having to be helping customers, being a cashier, and cleaning the store. As well as keeping an eye out for sticky-fingered teens.

I was a manager, on an average day, I wouldn’t even HAVE a sales associate helping me. I’d be alone in the store from 9am-1pm, when the other manager came in. We’d overlap to take our breaks from 1pm-5pm, and then they’d be alone the rest of the night.

Why? We wouldn’t have enough hours to give out. Why? Because people weren’t spending money.

Heaven forbid we went over hours.

What in saying is. Times change. Hot Topic has become more fandom-centric, but that’s because that’s how the crowd evolved.

The punk kids who bought from HT years ago now have kids of their own. Kids who like Disney and anime and comics.

While there is some shitty stuff going on, that’s to be expected with any store.

Hot Topic offers an affordable option to fans to get merch they like.

Anonymous asked:

The lips thing is racist because it comes from depictions of black people in racist art. If you look up racist black caricatures they will have lips like that. Using that "style" to show big lips is a callback to that which is what makes it racist.

ohhhhh okay, thank you! i never knew that? like, ever? so thank you for letting me know

Hey jsyk it’s 2018 and if you’re still drawing characters with big lips like THIS, even if they’re pale/not black, it’s fucking racist. Stop doing it.

No excuses. “It’s a stylistic choice!” It’s a RACIST stylistic choice.

“Idk how else to draw big lips!” That’s because you relied on racist caricatures and are a bad artist. Teach yourself. Learn. If you’re not willing to do that, then you are a bad, racist artist.

“But it’s part of the character design!” Yeah, and it’s racist. If it’s your OC, then change it. If it’s not your OC, make the right choice and draw them with normal looking bigger lips instead of this racist monstrosity.

And if this post makes you uncomfortable because it’s calling you out for stuff you’ve done, good. Fix it. Own up to it. Grow.

If you see this and you’re first thought is to defend this: you are racist. You are part of the problem. Congrats. Now work on yourself and unlearn that.

im not arguing or anyhing but i want to know, what makes ot seem racist? did someone do it to be rude or?? because i know a lot of people who arent black have gigantic lips and i just want to know where this was all coming from? again, im not defending anything, im just asking where the idea came from

i hate it when people on tumblr just romanticize scars on their ocs or otp or any fictional character

but if someone irl has scars they just stare at them or avoid them

i myself have a BUNCH of scars on my face and arm(none from self-harm, just from clumbsiness) and i notice people looking at me??

i have a huge one on my cheek and on my eyelid and on my chin and it gets so annoying when people stare at me??

im litterally the only one in my school with huge visible scars on my face?? so that kind of makes sense?? but its still rude???

this is a dumb subject but its just SO ANNOYING

also, if you want to draw scars, theyre not pink. at all. theyre just a slightly darker skintone, sometimes it just looks like an indent if its small enough. they are not pink lmfao
